The Samsung 9100 PRO is a premium PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD rated for sequential reads of up to 14,800 MB/s and writes of up to 13,400 MB/s, depending on capacity. Those are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed speeds: your computer must support the drive’s interface, and results vary with hardware, firmware and test conditions. The key buying question is whether your system and workload can make use of that headroom.

How fast is the Samsung 9100 PRO SSD?

Samsung specifies the 9100 PRO as a PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 drive in the M.2 2280 form factor. Its sequential performance ratings vary slightly by capacity:

Capacity Maximum sequential read Maximum sequential write
1TB 14,700 MB/s 13,300 MB/s
2TB 14,700 MB/s 13,400 MB/s
4TB 14,800 MB/s 13,400 MB/s
8TB 14,800 MB/s 13,400 MB/s

These are Samsung’s maximum sequential figures, not a promise of the speed every PC will report. Samsung says results can vary with firmware, hardware and configuration; the write ratings use Intelligent TurboWrite under specified conditions. In one independent review, TechRadar reported nearly 12,500 MB/s sequential read in its own test setup. That result is specific to that review’s system, not a prediction for every installation. Samsung 9100 PRO datasheet; TechRadar review.

Peak sequential speed is most relevant to transfers and workloads that move large, continuous files. It does not by itself establish faster game loading or a more responsive everyday PC; those tasks do not necessarily benefit in proportion to a headline sequential benchmark.

Will the Samsung 9100 PRO work in my PC?

Samsung lists backward compatibility with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x4 hosts. The drive may therefore work in a compatible older M.2 slot, but it will not reach its PCIe 5.0 maximums on those interfaces. Before buying, confirm that your motherboard or device supports an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD and check the slot’s supported PCIe generation, lane configuration and physical clearance in its manual.

  • PCIe 5.0 x4 host: The platform supports the interface needed for the drive’s highest rated speeds, subject to the rest of the system and test conditions.
  • PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 3.0 x4 host: Samsung states the drive is backward compatible, but host-interface limits mean it will not deliver PCIe 5.0 performance.
  • Laptop or compact system: Check the manufacturer’s M.2 requirements and available space. Do not assume that a desktop-sized add-in heatsink will fit.

Samsung identifies its controller, V-NAND TLC and LPDDR4X cache, with cache capacity scaling from 1GB to 8GB by drive capacity. It rates active read consumption from 7.6W for the 1TB model to 10.5W for the 8TB model, recommends proper airflow, and specifies an operating temperature of 0°C to 70°C measured through SMART. These specifications make system cooling and airflow worth checking for a high-performance installation. Samsung 9100 PRO datasheet.

Does the Samsung 9100 PRO work with PS5?

Samsung describes the 9100 PRO as suitable for compatible PCs and PS5, but that does not mean every 9100 PRO variant will fit every host. Check the console or device’s current storage requirements and available clearance before choosing a model, particularly if buying the preinstalled-heatsink version. Samsung’s product information supports compatibility in principle; fit depends on the specific host and variant. Samsung launch announcement; Samsung datasheet.

Which capacity and heatsink version should you choose?

Samsung lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. Pick capacity for the amount of storage you need, then match the heatsink style to your device rather than treating it as a speed upgrade.

Bare drive or integrated heatsink

The heatsink model is a distinct physical version. Samsung lists maximum dimensions of 80.15 × 25 × 8.88 mm for 1TB–4TB heatsink models and 80.15 × 25 × 11.25 mm for the 8TB version. Confirm clearance with the host manufacturer; a laptop or console bay may have tighter limits than a desktop M.2 slot. Samsung warns that removing the preinstalled heatsink can void the warranty. If the motherboard or host already provides a heatsink, check its installation guidance and the SSD’s clearance before choosing a version.

Endurance and warranty

Samsung lists a five-year limited warranty and capacity-based endurance ratings. The warranty ends when its stated time period or TBW limit is reached, whichever comes first.

Do you need a heatsink for a PCIe 5.0 SSD?

Not automatically. The right thermal solution depends on the host and how it handles M.2 cooling. Check whether your motherboard or device includes a compatible M.2 heatsink, whether the SSD fits under it, and whether the system has adequate airflow. If you need an integrated heatsink, verify its dimensions against the available space before ordering. The 8TB heatsink version is thicker than the 1TB–4TB heatsink versions.

Is the Samsung 9100 PRO worth it?

The 9100 PRO is a plausible fit when you have a compatible PCIe 5.0 x4 system, need a high-capacity M.2 drive, and run transfers or other workloads that can benefit from high sequential throughput. If your host is limited to PCIe 4.0 or 3.0, or your main priority is ordinary desktop use or game loading, the drive’s top-rated speeds may not translate into a noticeable advantage over a less costly suitable SSD.

Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement listed bare-drive launch MSRPs of $199.99 for 1TB, $299.99 for 2TB and $549.99 for 4TB; the corresponding heatsink editions launched at $219.99, $319.99 and $569.99. These are 2025 launch figures, not current prices, and should not be used as a value verdict. The announcement said 8TB models would follow in the second half of 2025; Samsung’s U.S. Newsroom index lists an 8TB availability announcement dated September 9, 2025. For a purchase decision, compare current price per usable terabyte, platform support, sustained-write behavior, thermal fit, endurance and warranty rather than peak sequential numbers alone.
