Saft announced on 10 September 2024 that it had commissioned a new production line at its Jacksonville, Florida, factory for lithium-ion battery containers used in commercial energy storage systems. The line is part of a broader U.S. expansion plan: Saft set a target of more than 5 GWh of U.S. energy storage production capacity in 2027, but the announcement does not establish Jacksonville’s current output or confirm that the target has been reached.
What Saft commissioned in Jacksonville
The new line produces battery energy storage system (BESS) containers for commercial-scale installations. This is industrial equipment for energy storage projects, not a line for household batteries. Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, said the investment was intended to address demand for U.S. projects with a domestic-content solution and to strengthen the national supply chain.
Saft did not publish a job count alongside the announcement. It said the investment would create direct and indirect job opportunities, without quantifying them.
What the U.S. capacity target means
Saft described a broader expansion strategy intended to bring its U.S. energy storage production capacity to more than 5 GWh in 2027. That is a company-announced future target, not a reported measure of Jacksonville’s line output or proof that the target has been achieved. The announcement coverage also cited Saft’s company-reported installed energy storage base of around 4 GWh; that figure describes installations, not production at the Florida factory.

The figures should not be conflated: GWh refers to energy capacity at the scale of production or deployment, while MWh describes the energy capacity of an individual container or system configuration.
How the Jacksonville line relates to Saft’s I-Shift systems
EE Times reported that production of I-Shift BESS containers had started in Jacksonville. In a 19 June 2024 product announcement, Saft described I-Shift+ as a modular system housed in a standard 20-foot shipping container, assembled and tested in Saft factories before delivery to customer sites for installation. Saft said it planned to increase container capacity from 3.3 MWh to more than 5 MWh by 2026. Those are company descriptions and plans, not independent performance test results or confirmation that the planned capacity was delivered on schedule.

Saft also described I-Sight, a cloud-based platform for remote, real-time monitoring of energy storage fleets, with an AI algorithm intended to support predictive maintenance. It is related product context, rather than the subject of the Jacksonville production-line announcement.
Why Saft said it is expanding U.S. manufacturing
Saft framed local production as a way to respond faster to U.S. customers, increase local content over time through domestic supply chains, and reduce environmental footprint. These are the company’s stated aims; the announcement did not quantify realized delivery-time changes, domestic-content levels, or emissions reductions.

Hervé Amossé, Saft’s executive vice president for Energy Storage Systems, said the expansion strategy would enhance the Jacksonville site’s ability to respond to U.S. customers and reduce the company’s environmental footprint. That statement describes Saft’s rationale and expectation, not a measured outcome.
Market context cited in the announcement coverage
EE Times, citing Bloomberg, reported that 22 GWh of U.S. energy storage capacity was deployed in 2023. The same coverage attributed to Bloomberg a forecast of 134 GW and 484 GWh of cumulative U.S. energy storage by 2030. The 2023 figure is historical; the 2030 figures are forecasts, not achieved totals, and the underlying Bloomberg material was not independently verified here.

What the announcement does not establish
- Jacksonville’s actual production output after commissioning.
- Whether the more-than-5-GWh U.S. capacity target for 2027 has been met.
- The number of jobs created or the realized environmental impact.
- Whether particular projects or containers qualify for any tax credit.
Saft said its 5.1 MWh containers would meet Inflation Reduction Act 2022 requirements by 2026. That is the company’s statement, not an independent legal determination of tax-credit eligibility for a product, project, or purchaser.
