Before heating a graphene composite with near-infrared (NIR) light, identify the source and its operating conditions, complete the relevant optical-radiation hazard assessment, set and monitor a material-appropriate temperature and exposure time, and assess possible emissions from the composite and its matrix. Laser eye exposure, hot surfaces, fire, and material emissions are separate hazards; no single eyewear rating, safe temperature, or ventilation rule applies to every setup.

What information do you need before switching on the source?

“Near-infrared” alone is not enough to determine the precautions. First establish what equipment and material are involved, then have the setup assessed under your institution’s applicable safety procedures.

  • Source: Determine whether it is a laser or a broadband lamp. Record the wavelength or wavelength range, output or power density, beam geometry, and exposure duration.
  • Access and surroundings: Identify whether the beam can be reached directly or through reflections, whether the source is enclosed, and who can enter the work area.
  • Material: Identify the graphene form, polymer or other matrix, additives, coatings, and whether the sample is cured, damaged, cut, or abraded.
  • Process: Define the intended endpoint, sample temperature limit, exposure time, and atmosphere. Consult equipment documentation and the material’s safety data and thermal-decomposition information.

These details determine the optical hazard, appropriate controls, thermal limits, and whether local exhaust or other emission controls are warranted. The topic alone does not establish a particular eyewear specification, temperature limit, or set of decomposition products.

What optical-radiation controls are needed?

If the source is a laser

Have a competent laser-safety authority assess the actual setup and follow the laboratory’s laser safety program and the manufacturer’s instructions. UKHSA notes that optical-radiation risk depends on conditions of use, exposure time, and environment. NIST describes a laser safety program that includes hazard identification and review, engineering and administrative controls, PPE selection and use, control areas, signs, and training.

Mito Red PRO Red Light Therapy Goggles for Near Infrared Eye Protection (IR5 Extra Dark)
  • RED LIGHT THERAPY EYE PROTECTION — Designed to attenuate the red and near infrared wavelengths (about 600-900nm) used in most red light therapy panels and LED devices, helping reduce brightness and glare so you stay comfortable through your session. Everyday sunglasses aren't built for these wavelengths.
  • CHOOSE YOUR TINT — DARK (IR3) OR EXTRA DARK (IR5) — One frame, two levels. Dark (IR3) reduces intensity by approximately 80%; Extra Dark (IR5) by approximately 95%. Pick the tint that matches your device's output and your personal comfort.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT, GLASSES-STYLE GOGGLES — A slim, low-profile design that sits naturally on your face without the bulk or pressure marks of wraparound goggles. Comfortable for a full 10-20 minute red light therapy session.
  • ANTI-SCRATCH CURVED LENSES — Durable polycarbonate lenses with an anti-scratch coating built to hold up to daily use, addressing the quick wear that's a common complaint with budget eyewear.
  • MADE FOR RED LIGHT, NOT SCREENS — These goggles are engineered to attenuate red and near infrared light only — they are not blue-light or screen glasses. If you have an eye condition or any concern, consult your eye care professional before use.
  • Use an enclosure, beam stops, controlled access, signage, and training as required by the assessment.
  • Use protective eyewear only when specified by the assessment, and select it for the source wavelength and required protection level. Fit and side protection also matter for the assessed setup.
  • Do not assume sunglasses or generic tinted safety glasses provide laser protection. No optical density or product model can be specified without the source parameters and hazard assessment.

If the source is a broadband lamp

Assess its optical-radiation hazards under the relevant institutional procedure. A laser-specific classification by itself may not describe the appropriate controls for a non-laser source.

How should you control heating and fire risk?

Set the process endpoint and a suitable maximum sample temperature and exposure duration before operation. Measure temperature at a location relevant to the material and geometry, using a method appropriate to the setup; check for local hot spots where feasible. Keep combustible materials away from the heated region, secure the sample and fixtures, and let them cool before handling.

Mito Red Light Glasses - Eye Protection for Red Light Therapy (600nm-900nm) - Goggles for IR3 Dark
  • Eye Protection for Red Light Therapy: Red Light Therapy Glasses designed to attenuate commonly used wavelengths in red light therapy devices and help reduce perceived eye strain while still allowing visible light through.
  • Reduces Brightness & Intensity of Red Light Therapy: Red light eye protection helps shield your eyes from brightness during sessions while still allowing visible light through.
  • Balanced & Targeted Attenuation: It's important to use eye protection designed for both red and near-infrared light. These wavelengths are commonly used in red light therapy devices, meaning regular sunglasses or goggles won't offer sufficient protection
  • Customizable Protection: Choose between IR3 Dark (80% reduction) and IR5 Extra Dark (95% reduction) to customize the level of attenuation for your comfort and specific use case
  • Thoughtful Design: Unlike bulky alternatives, our eye goggles for red light therapy are lightweight, anti-scratch, and designed like glasses to ensure both comfort & effectiveness

Do not use a temperature or exposure dose from a biomedical photothermal experiment as a general-purpose safety limit. A 2023 review of NIR laser-induced hyperthermia involving graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide describes substantial variation across studies and identifies material amount, wavelength, power density, temperature, and exposure time as relevant factors. Those studies do not establish a universal limit for an unspecified composite or process.

How do you reduce exposure to graphene and possible emissions?

Free powder and composite handling

Avoid open handling of dry graphene-family powders. NIOSH nanomaterial guidance describes local exhaust ventilation, safe work practices, housekeeping, spill controls, training, and PPE as risk-management measures. Apply the controls called for by your workplace assessment, especially during powder handling.

Where the task permits, handling a stable, cured composite is preferable to manipulating free powder, but consider whether cutting, abrasion, damage, or heating could release material. An EU project assessment considered powder handling the higher release concern in its case and release less likely after dispersion in a polymer matrix. That finding does not show that every composite remains emission-free under all conditions.

Matrix, additives, and heating conditions

Assess the binder, additives, and coatings as well as the graphene. Check the material safety information and thermal-decomposition data for the specific formulation and process conditions. The polymer, additives, atmosphere, and setpoint are not specified here, so particular fumes, ignition products, or ventilation requirements cannot be named reliably.

What should a practical procedure specify?

  1. Characterize the setup: Record source type, wavelength or range, output or power density, beam geometry, exposure duration, accessibility, and sample composition.
  2. Complete the hazard review: Obtain the applicable laser or optical-radiation review and assess thermal, fire, and material-release hazards with competent safety personnel.
  3. Set controls before operation: Specify access restrictions, enclosure or beam stops, signs and training as required; determine any wavelength-matched eyewear from the assessment.
  4. Set and monitor the process: Establish the purpose-specific temperature and time limits, choose a suitable measurement method, and define what to do if the sample or apparatus exceeds them.
  5. Plan handling and shutdown: Apply the assessed containment or exhaust controls, keep combustibles clear, and let the sample and fixtures cool before handling.

NIST states that its laser safety program requires lasers and laser systems to be operated consistently with ANSI Z136.1 and other applicable standards and regulations. That statement describes NIST’s program; follow the standards and rules applicable to your own workplace and jurisdiction.
