The safest alternative is to use a game’s own supported mod browser or an official add-on channel. If the game has no such option, download only from the established mod platform’s own website or app—and verify that it supports your specific game and version. These steps reduce risk, but platform scans and moderation cannot guarantee that every file is safe.
Choose a download route that fits your game
Start with the channel closest to the game’s developer, then move to a platform that explicitly supports the title. If neither option is clear, playing without mods or sticking to official add-ons and DLC avoids downloading user-uploaded files.

For Minecraft: Java Edition
Modrinth’s documented focus is Minecraft: Java Edition, including mods, plugins, data packs, shaders, resource packs, and modpacks. Its desktop app lets players browse, install, and play content from the platform. Modrinth says it is not an official Minecraft service, so do not treat it as endorsed by Mojang or Microsoft. CurseForge advises Minecraft players to get modpacks directly through its own app or website. Its stated scanning process covers downloads made directly through those channels; it does not cover ZIP modpacks supplied by friends and imported by the player. What a platform’s safety checks do—and don’t—tell you
A platform’s scan or review is one useful signal, not a promise that a file is harmless. Check the platform’s stated scope and exclusions, as well as the individual project’s instructions, update history, and compatibility details.
CurseForge
CurseForge says it scans downloads made directly through its app or website. It cannot scan or verify a modpack ZIP that someone else sends you and that you import yourself. A download being associated with CurseForge does not mean every file reached through every route received the same checks. Read CurseForge’s explanation before relying on its safeguards.

Modrinth
Modrinth describes malware scanning and moderator review, and its rules and disclosure requirements place obligations on publishers. For example, projects that interact with a user’s system outside the expected game context must disclose that behavior. Its disclosure guidance, content rules, and review information describe platform controls, not a guarantee that every project is safe. Review timing can fluctuate.
Nexus Mods
Nexus Mods says uploaded content undergoes security checks and virus scanning before it becomes available, and some files may be quarantined or blocked. It also notes that antivirus tools can produce false positives when mod behavior resembles a threat. A warning should prompt investigation; a clean scan alone is not proof of safety. Check the file before installing it
- Go to the platform yourself. Open its official website or app rather than following an unsolicited link. Steam Support advises users to research software and offers, be skeptical of software linked by others, and download from the official source. See Steam’s account security recommendations.
- Verify the project and compatibility. Confirm the project is the one you intended to download, supports your game edition and version, and has instructions that make sense for that game. Do not assume a mod for one edition works on another.
- Read the project details. Look at its description, update history, and any available scan, review, or moderation information. Check whether it explains what the files do and whether it asks for behavior beyond what the mod needs.
- Stop if the download path changes unexpectedly. Be wary of unfamiliar JAR files, executables, unrelated overrides, or prompts to install extra software. If you cannot establish why a file is needed, do not run it.
- Check multiplayer rules before joining. A trusted source does not establish that a modification is allowed in a particular game or server. Steam’s VAC guidance advises caution with modifications, including scripts and custom skins, and recommends trusted sources. Check the game’s and server’s rules for your specific session.
Warning signs that call for a hard stop
CurseForge’s safety guidance flags several patterns that deserve extra caution: someone sends a ZIP through Discord and asks you to import it, pressures you to join or download quickly, says a download is required, shares an unusually small pack, or directs you to install files outside the official app or site. Unfamiliar JARs, unexpected executables, and unrelated overrides are also reasons to stop and verify. The platform’s stated scan coverage does not apply to friend-supplied modpack ZIPs you import. Steam Support warns that malware can be disguised as pirated software, cheats, fake demos or betas, and gaming-adjacent utilities such as mod managers and inventory managers. Treat an unexpected tool or offer as untrusted until you have researched it and found its official source. Steam’s account security recommendations explain this advice.

If you think a mod or related tool infected your device
Stop using the suspect file and avoid downloading replacement “fix” tools from links sent in chats or pop-ups. Steam Support recommends using a spyware/adware scanner and a virus-scanning utility when malware may be interfering with Steam, and says to obtain such tools only from official, trusted websites. Follow its guidance for spyware, malware, adware, or virus interference. If you are unsure how to proceed, seek help from a trusted security professional rather than running more unknown software.
