What happened in the Sabre hotel booking breach?
Sabre Hospitality Solutions operates the SynXis Central Reservation System, a platform hotels use to facilitate bookings through travel coordinators, agencies and online booking companies. In a filing, Sabre said an unauthorized party obtained account credentials that enabled access to a subset of hotel reservations and payment information.
Sabre dated the first access to payment-card information to August 10, 2016, and the last to March 9, 2017. It said it notified hotel customers on June 6, 2017. The dates and incident description appear in Sabre’s filing.
What information was accessible?
According to Sabre’s filing, accessed reservation records could include cardholder names, payment-card numbers and expiration dates. For a subset of reservations, the records could also include card security codes. Some records included guest names and contact information.

Sabre said Social Security numbers, passport numbers and driver’s license numbers were not accessed. Its investigators found no forensic evidence that information had been removed, but Sabre said removal could not be ruled out. In other words, access was established; the investigation did not establish that data was taken, but could not exclude that possibility. State attorneys general separately described the incident as exposing approximately 1.3 million credit cards.
Who notified hotel guests?
Sabre notified its hotel customers, and the hotels handled consumer notices. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s December 24, 2020 release reported that some notices to consumers were sent as late as 2018 and that some consumers received more than one notice. Yost said, “Sabre’s customers seeking hotel reservations were also booked on a hacker’s hard drive.”

The settlement later required Sabre to clarify its responsibilities and those of hotel customers in future contracts for responding to a breach. Tennessee also said Sabre had to try to determine whether its customers had notified consumers and provide attorneys general with a list of the customers it had notified.
Why did 27 states settle with Sabre?
State attorneys general investigated the incident and announced a settlement totaling $2.4 million, alongside requirements intended to strengthen Sabre’s security practices and clarify breach response. Tennessee’s account and the National Association of Attorneys General’s settlement database identify 27 participating states.

The reported state settlement figure is $2.4 million. Sabre’s filing separately says it paid $2 million to states represented in its settlement agreements in the first quarter of 2021; that filing describes a different payment amount and reporting frame, so it should not be substituted for the total announced by the states.
What security changes did the settlement require?
The settlement required Sabre to maintain a comprehensive information-security program, implement specified security measures, and create a written incident-response and breach-notification plan. It also required a third-party security assessment and clearer future contracts defining Sabre’s and hotel clients’ roles after a breach.

These obligations address corporate security and accountability. They do not establish that the incident involved every reservation or every hotel using SynXis.
