Both have 16 cores, 32 threads, boost clocks up to 5.7 GHz, and a 170 W default TDP. The key difference is the 9950X3D’s extra 3D V-Cache, which can help some games but does not guarantee a fixed gaming advantage in every title.
What changes between the 9950X3D and 9950X?
Both are 16-core, 32-thread AM5 desktop processors with advertised boost clocks up to 5.7 GHz and a 170 W default TDP. The 9950X3D adds substantially more L3 cache, while the 9950X launched at a lower price. Specifications are useful context, but they do not tell you which CPU will be faster in a particular game or application.

AMD identifies the 9950X3D as a Granite Ridge processor for the AM5 platform. Its official specifications list a 4.3 GHz base clock, 128 MB L3 cache, and support for overclocking and AMD EXPO memory overclocking. The cited comparison table is the source for the 9950X’s 64 MB L3 figure and matching 170 W TDP.

How does 3D V-Cache affect gaming?
More cache can help a processor keep data close to its cores, which may benefit games that are sensitive to memory access. The effect depends on the game, settings, and test setup: cache capacity alone cannot establish a universal performance uplift over the 9950X.
In its March 2025 review, Tom’s Hardware reported that the 9950X3D averaged 37% ahead of Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K and tied the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in its 1080p game suite. Those results describe that review’s test system and game selection; they are not a measured average lead over the 9950X. A different set of games, resolution, or graphics-card limit can change the comparison.

- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition
For your own decision, look for benchmarks of the specific games you play at the resolution and settings you use. At higher resolutions, a system may become more limited by the graphics card, making a CPU difference less visible; the size of that effect depends on the game and hardware.
Which is better for productivity?
Both chips have the same core and thread count, so compare results in the applications you actually use rather than assuming the X3D cache makes the 9950X3D faster at every production task. Workloads that scale across cores, such as rendering or encoding, may respond differently from lightly threaded applications, and software-specific benchmarks are the useful guide.

- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
GamersNexus’ March 2025 review characterized the 9950X as the better value for pure productivity, while describing the 9950X3D as compelling for people combining heavy production workloads with gaming. Tom’s Hardware likewise described the 9950X3D as retaining nearly all the productivity performance of standard Zen 5 models while delivering strong gaming. These are review conclusions, not guarantees for every application; check results for your own software.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the 9950X3D if gaming and production both matter
- You want one processor for demanding work and high-end gaming.
- Your games show a meaningful benefit from X3D cache in benchmarks relevant to your setup.
- The current price premium over the 9950X is acceptable for the combined workload you expect.
Choose the 9950X if productivity value comes first
- Your main workloads are production applications, and their benchmarks favor the 9950X3D only marginally or not at all.
- You would rather keep the price difference for another component or use.
- Gaming is secondary, or your preferred games do not show a worthwhile cache-related gain.
Consider whether either is the right value for a single-purpose build
GamersNexus characterized the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as a better value for pure gaming. If gaming is your only priority, compare that processor and other current options at local prices rather than paying for 16 cores you may not use. For production alone, compare application-specific results and current pricing before treating either 9950X model as the value choice.

- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
What to check before upgrading or building
The 9950X3D uses the AM5 platform. Before buying either processor, confirm that your exact motherboard supports it with an appropriate BIOS version; consult the motherboard maker’s CPU support list rather than assuming compatibility from the socket alone. Also verify the memory configuration and cooler requirements for your system. AMD lists EXPO memory-overclocking support for the 9950X3D, but that does not establish compatibility for every memory kit or motherboard setting.
AMD says its second-generation 3D V-Cache design places cache below the core complex die, a change it says enables higher clocks, lower temperatures, and better performance than the prior generation. That is AMD’s explanation of the design, not an independent guarantee about temperatures or performance in a particular build. See AMD’s CES 2025 announcement.
