It supports batch jobs, transcript editing and TXT, SRT or JSON export. The project says audio files stay on your computer, though downloading a model may require an internet connection.
What EchoTranscribe does
EchoTranscribe is an open-source desktop speech-to-text application. The project says it uses Whisper models through faster-whisper and supports Windows, macOS and Linux. Its documented workflow is to add one or more audio files, choose a model, let the app detect the language or select one yourself, run transcription, review and edit the transcript, then export it.
The README lists support for up to ten files in a batch, automatic language detection, word-level timestamps, persistent preferences and transcript editing. It documents TXT, SRT and JSON as export formats.

Choose a Whisper model size
The project describes model selection as a speed-versus-quality trade-off. It does not publish measured timing or accuracy benchmarks, so treat these descriptions as qualitative guidance rather than a performance guarantee.

For a meaningful comparison, run the same representative audio through the candidate models and review the output yourself. Accuracy and speed can depend on the recording and the computer; the README does not establish a best model for a particular language, hardware setup or use case.

Install the desktop app
For ordinary use, the project directs users to download the latest build for their operating system from the repository’s Releases page. Package availability can change, so check that page for a build matching your platform rather than assuming every operating system has a current installer.
The README’s developer setup is separate from installing a release: it lists Node.js 18 or later, Python 3.8 or later and Rust for compiling the Tauri interface, along with platform-specific dependencies and setup steps. If you are only using the app, follow the release instructions instead of setting up the development environment.

Expect an internet connection for model setup
EchoTranscribe downloads AI models as needed and stores them in .echo-transcribe/models under the user’s home directory on Linux and macOS, or under the user’s profile on Windows. The README says a missing model is downloaded automatically and recommends checking the internet connection if that download fails. As a result, local transcription does not necessarily mean the initial model setup can be done offline.
What the privacy claim means
The project’s feature list says, “Your audio files never leave your computer.” That is EchoTranscribe’s stated design, not an independently verified security finding. The reviewed project material does not establish network behavior through an audit, nor does it support broader guarantees about logs, operating-system backups or the security of an individual device.

Model downloads may use the internet, as described above. If your work involves sensitive recordings, review the project’s current documentation and decide whether its stated design and your own device’s security meet your requirements.
