Yes—you can run AI directly on an Android phone or iPhone for free with Google AI Edge Gallery. Install the app, download a model while online, and then use its on-device chat and other supported features. Google says model inference can work offline after setup.
The published minimums are Android 12 or later and iOS 17 or later. Those are operating-system requirements, not a promise that every compatible phone will run every model quickly; performance depends on the device and model.
How to get started with local AI
- Check your operating system. Google lists Android 12 or later and iOS 17 or later as requirements for Google AI Edge Gallery. See the Google AI Edge Gallery project for current project details.
- Install the official app. Find Google AI Edge Gallery in the Google Play listing or the Apple App Store listing.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and download a model. Models are separate downloads and can take substantial storage. Google lists Gemma 4 E2B at 2.58 GB in its LiteRT model documentation; other model sizes vary, so check the app’s current download details before choosing.
- Try a simple prompt in AI Chat. Features such as image or audio input depend on the selected model and app version. Start with the basic chat workflow before exploring additional tools.
- Test offline use. After the app and model are downloaded, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data and submit a prompt. Local inference can work without internet; anything that searches the web, retrieves remote content, or otherwise needs a network connection will not.
What local AI can and cannot do
Useful everyday tasks
A downloaded model can help draft or rephrase text, summarize material you provide, and answer straightforward questions. It is most useful when you want an AI feature available without sending each prompt to a remote model for inference.
Limits to keep in mind
- Answers may be wrong or outdated. A local model is not automatically more accurate than a cloud service, and it cannot know current online facts while offline.
- Speed and capability vary. A phone that meets the OS requirement may still have limited memory, storage, or processing headroom for a particular model. Google warns that performance depends on hardware.
- Offline does not mean every feature is offline. Local inference can happen without a connection, but connected tools and remote information require one.
- The app is experimental. Google describes Gallery as an experimental beta, and features and model availability can change as the app is updated.
Privacy: what on-device means here
Google says prompts and model inference stay on the device and that internet access is not required for inference. This describes the local model operation; it is not a blanket guarantee that every part of the app never transmits diagnostic or usage information.

The Google Play data-safety disclosure is separate from the inference claim. It says the app does not share data with third parties, while also listing possible collection of app activity and app info and performance, and saying data is encrypted in transit. Review the live store disclosure and app settings if your privacy decision depends on what information the app may collect.
Is Google AI Edge Gallery the right route?
For someone who wants to try local AI without building software, the store app is the straightforward choice. Google’s developer options are intended for people integrating inference into their own applications, not as simpler consumer chat apps.

How to judge whether your phone will handle it
Start with free storage and the specific model’s download size, then try the model on your own phone before relying on it for regular work. Google’s documentation includes benchmark measurements for a Samsung S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro, but those are Google’s device-specific measurements, not independent tests or a performance guarantee for other phones. The published OS minimums and example benchmarks do not establish that you need to buy a new device.
