Yes—you can run a coding AI model on a GPU with limited memory, but the model’s listed download size is not its full runtime memory requirement. A practical starting point is Ollama’s qwen2.5-coder:7b with a modest context; if it will not fit, try the 3B model, lower the context, and check whether the model is actually using the GPU. The model weights, context and KV cache, runtime allocations, other loaded models, and parallel requests all affect memory use. Partial CPU offload can make a model load, but it needs system RAM and may reduce speed.

What do you need before you start?

You need a supported GPU and driver, Ollama installed, enough available system memory for the runtime and any CPU-offloaded work, and a coding model in a format Ollama can run. The steps below use Ollama and Qwen2.5-Coder as a practical example; the commands do not guarantee that a particular model will fit a particular GPU. Compatibility depends on the installed runtime, driver, GPU, model configuration, context, and what else is using memory.

Before downloading anything, note the GPU’s actual VRAM capacity and leave room for the context and runtime—not just the model file. Also close or unload models you are not using. A GPU’s family name alone is not enough to determine how much memory a specific card has.

Why doesn’t a 4.7 GB model fit in 8 GB of VRAM?

Because a model’s file size represents its stored weights, not all the memory needed to run it. The model also needs runtime allocations and memory for the prompt and generated conversation; the context’s KV cache grows with the amount of context in use. Other models, parallel requests, and GPU applications can further reduce the memory available.

For example, Ollama lists Qwen2.5-Coder at 1.9 GB for 3B, 4.7 GB for 7B, and 9.0 GB for 14B. Qwen’s official 7B GGUF repository lists the Q4_K_M file at 4.68 GB. Those are model-listing and file-size figures—not measured peak VRAM requirements or proof that a model will fit fully on an 8 GB card. See the Ollama Qwen2.5-Coder listing and Qwen’s official GGUF repository.

Quantization reduces the memory footprint of model weights, but a smaller file is not the same thing as a complete runtime budget. Qwen’s repository also lists the 7B Q3_K_M file at 3.81 GB and Q8_0 at 8.1 GB. Lower-bit quantization can help with memory, but it may affect output quality; compare results on the coding work that matters to you rather than assuming the trade-off is invisible. The available figures do not establish a particular quality penalty for your tasks.

Can I run a coding LLM on an 8 GB GPU?

Possibly, but no model-size figure can guarantee a full-GPU fit. A 3B model or a quantized 7B model with a relatively small context is a more plausible starting point than a larger model, but actual fit depends on runtime overhead, memory available to the model, and your configuration.

Start with the 7B Q4_K_M option only if you are prepared to fall back: its 4.68 GB weight file does not leave 3.32 GB of guaranteed usable space on an 8 GB GPU. If it fails to load, uses too much CPU memory, or leaves too little room for useful context, try the 3B model before pursuing more elaborate tuning. A smaller coding model that runs reliably can be more useful than a larger one that repeatedly fails to load or forces an impractically small context.

Do not infer fit from a GPU model name alone. For example, NVIDIA lists both 8 GB and 16 GB memory configurations for the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti; check the exact card variant rather than assuming all cards with that name have the same capacity. The NVIDIA RTX 5060 family specifications identify these configurations. A hardware purchase is only one possible option, and compatibility, power requirements, drivers, and the exact retailer SKU still need to be checked for the intended desktop.

How do I run a coding model in Ollama?

Use a small context first, then inspect the actual processor allocation. If the 7B model does not fit the available memory budget, move down to 3B instead of assuming the file size predicts the outcome.

  1. Check GPU and driver support. Confirm that your GPU family and installed driver are supported by Ollama. Its GPU documentation describes supported NVIDIA families and driver requirements, including RTX 5060 Ti. Support can depend on the system and installed version, so consult the current documentation for your setup.
  2. Start the 7B model. In a terminal, run ollama run qwen2.5-coder:7b. Ollama will download the model if it is not already present. If the model fails to load within the available memory budget, try ollama run qwen2.5-coder:3b. Neither command guarantees a specific GPU fit.
  3. Set a conservative context for the session. At the Ollama interactive prompt, enter /set parameter num_ctx 4096. This starts with a 4,096-token context; raise it only when your task benefits from more context and the observed memory use permits it.
  4. Inspect placement from another terminal. Run ollama ps and check the PROCESSOR column and, where shown, CONTEXT. A CPU/GPU split means part of the model is on the CPU rather than fully resident on the GPU. A GPU allocation is useful evidence about placement, not proof that every future prompt or concurrent request will fit.
  5. Stop models you are not using. Run ollama stop <model>, replacing <model> with the model name shown by Ollama. Then check ollama ps again. Other loaded models and parallel requests can consume additional memory.

Ollama currently documents a 4K default context for GPUs below 24 GiB and notes that coding agents may benefit from substantially more context. These points describe different needs: a larger context can help a coding workflow keep more material available, while also increasing memory demand. Begin small on a constrained GPU and expand only if the task needs it and the device can sustain it. The 7B GGUF release’s model card specifies a 32,768-token full context; that maximum is not a promise that 32,768 tokens will fit on your GPU. See Ollama’s context-length documentation.

How do I lower Ollama VRAM usage?

First reduce avoidable demand: use a smaller model, lower the context, unload unused models, and limit simultaneous requests. If the weights fit but longer contexts cause memory trouble, investigate Flash Attention and KV-cache quantization. These adjustments address different parts of memory use, and none creates more physical VRAM.

1. Reduce the model size or context

Move from 7B to 3B if the model cannot load comfortably, and begin with num_ctx 4096. A shorter context uses less context-related memory but gives the model less room to handle long files, extended conversations, or larger coding-agent tasks. Increase the context in steps when a task needs it, watching whether the model still loads and whether ollama ps shows the expected processor placement.

2. Remove competing allocations

Stop models that are no longer needed and avoid unnecessary parallel requests. Ollama documents OLLAMA_NUM_PARALLEL as a way to configure parallel processing. Parallel requests can increase effective context allocation, so concurrency that is convenient on a larger GPU may be a poor fit for a constrained one. An unusually large requested context can prevent a model from loading even when its weight file looks small enough.

3. Consider KV-cache settings only if context is the pressure point

Ollama says Flash Attention can reduce memory growth as context length increases and is enabled automatically where supported. Its documented cache options include the default f16, q8_0, and q4_0. Ollama estimates that q8_0 uses about half the f16 KV-cache memory, while q4_0 uses about one-quarter. Those are estimates for the KV cache—not for total VRAM or the model weights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cache quantization requires Flash Attention in Ollama. To change the cache type, configure OLLAMA_KV_CACHE_TYPE in the environment of the running Ollama server, then restart or reconfigure the service as needed for the operating system and installation. Follow the current Ollama FAQ for the supported values and setup. Do not treat changing a shell variable in one terminal as proof that an already-running service received it.

Ollama flags a potentially more noticeable precision impact from q4_0, including for some Qwen-family models. If coding output becomes less useful, compare the same representative task with a different cache setting or return to the default. Cache quantization can reduce cache memory; it does not shrink the weight file or guarantee a quality result for every workload.

What should I do if the model loads but the context does not fit?

Lower the context, reduce parallel activity, and confirm that other models are unloaded before changing weight quantization or offloading layers. If a task genuinely requires a long context, the practical limit may be the GPU’s memory capacity rather than a broken installation.

Try increasing context gradually from the conservative starting point instead of jumping straight to a model’s advertised maximum. A model can load at a short context and fail or become impractical at a much longer one because the KV cache consumes additional memory. If Flash Attention is supported, Ollama may use it automatically; if you need more control, evaluate its documented cache settings with the trade-offs above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether parallel work is multiplying demand. For a single-person coding session, fewer concurrent requests may be preferable to a configuration optimized for serving many requests at once. If the model remains partly on CPU, decide whether the available system memory and slower execution are acceptable for the task. If not, reduce model size or context, or consider hardware with more actual VRAM.

Does CPU offload need more RAM?

Yes. When some model layers are placed on the CPU, their memory demand moves to system RAM; it does not vanish. The remaining GPU-resident layers still need VRAM, and transferring work away from the GPU can reduce speed. How much host memory is needed depends on the model, offloaded layers, context, runtime, and other processes; the supplied model-file sizes do not establish a universal RAM requirement.

For more control than Ollama’s automatic placement, llama.cpp documents GPU-layer selection with --gpu-layers, context configuration with --ctx-size, KV-cache choices with --cache-type-k and --cache-type-v, and a memory-margin fit target. A conceptual server command from the Qwen GGUF workflow is:

Check the help output for the installed llama.cpp build, verify that it has a working GPU backend, and consult the llama.cpp server documentation. The exact behavior and available options can vary by build and backend. If full GPU placement fails, lower the number of GPU-resident layers rather than assuming a fixed layer count works on every card. The remaining layers need host memory; partial offload is a fallback, not extra VRAM.

Python users may instead use Transformers with bitsandbytes, whose documentation covers 4-bit and 8-bit loading and CPU/GPU offload. This is a separate workflow, not a GGUF command translated into Python. In Hugging Face’s documented 8-bit offload path, weights dispatched to the CPU remain in float32, so CPU offloading may require substantially more host memory than the quantized GPU weights suggest. Review the Transformers bitsandbytes documentation before choosing that route.

How do I tell if Ollama is using my GPU?

Run ollama ps while the model is loaded and inspect PROCESSOR. Ollama reports whether the model is on the CPU, GPU, or split between them; it may also display context. A split indicates partial offload rather than full GPU placement. If the command shows a CPU allocation, a functioning model session is not the same as full GPU acceleration.

If the model does not appear, check that you ran ollama ps while it was loaded and that the model was not stopped. If it appears on CPU despite a supported GPU, verify driver and GPU support against Ollama’s current documentation, and check that the GPU has memory available. Unloading competing models and reducing context can change whether more of the model fits on the GPU. ollama ps is a placement check, not a benchmark; it does not provide a universal speed figure or prove how the setup will behave under different contexts or concurrent workloads.

Which approach should I choose?

Choose the least complicated setup that meets the coding task, memory limit, and compatibility needs. The trade-off is not simply model size: usable context, output quality, GPU placement, host RAM, driver support, and concurrency all matter.

  • Start with Ollama and Qwen2.5-Coder 7B Q4_K_M when you want a straightforward local coding model and have enough available memory to test a short context. The 4.68 GB file size is a weight-file figure, not a full-fit guarantee.
  • Use Qwen2.5-Coder 3B when the 7B model will not load or leaves too little room for the context you need. Ollama lists its size at 1.9 GB; that is still not an exact VRAM requirement.
  • Try cache tuning when the main problem is longer context and the runtime supports the required Flash Attention configuration. Remember that the approximate savings apply only to KV-cache memory.
  • Use llama.cpp or Transformers when you need finer placement or a Python-based workflow and can manage the relevant backend and configuration details. Plan separately for system RAM if CPU offload is involved.
  • Consider a GPU with more VRAM only after tuning the model and workload, and verify the exact memory variant and desktop compatibility. More VRAM can expand the available budget, but does not remove the need to account for context and runtime allocations.

For example, Ollama lists Qwen3-Coder 30B at 19 GB and advertises a 256K context. Those listing figures do not mean 19 GB of VRAM is sufficient to run it, nor that the advertised context fits on a small card. Likewise, Qwen2.5-Coder 7B’s 32,768-token context specification describes the model release, not an expected working context on every GPU. Treat advertised context as a model capability and the usable context as a system-specific configuration.

How we picked this workflow

The workflow prioritizes a coding-tuned model with published model-size information, a common local runtime, and steps that let readers check actual placement rather than infer it from download size. It recommends reducing model size and context before relying on partial offload, and separates weight quantization from KV-cache tuning. The comparison accounts for coding-task quality at a given model size, context memory, full-GPU versus CPU-offloaded placement, backend and driver compatibility, and available system RAM. No universal speed, quality score, or exact GPU-fit result is asserted for an unspecified computer.

What is the sensible upgrade path?

Try a smaller coding model, a modest working context, and fewer simultaneous workloads first. If those changes still do not provide the capacity your coding tasks require, consider a graphics card with more VRAM; verify the exact memory configuration, compatible desktop, power supply, driver support, and retailer SKU before buying. NVIDIA’s specifications list a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti configuration with 16 GB as well as an 8 GB configuration, so the product name alone is insufficient to identify memory capacity. More VRAM can provide more room for model weights and context, but it does not guarantee a particular model, context, or performance outcome.

If you choose CPU offload instead, check whether your existing system RAM can accommodate the offloaded layers and other running programs. Additional system RAM may help with that host-memory constraint; it does not add dedicated GPU memory or turn an offloaded model into a full-GPU model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the main pitfalls to avoid?

  • Equating file size with VRAM use: model weights are only one part of runtime memory.
  • Assuming maximum context is practical: larger context increases memory demand, particularly for the KV cache.
  • Expecting quantization to have no quality trade-off: lower-bit weights or cache settings can affect outputs; assess them against your own coding tasks.
  • Calling partial offload a GPU upgrade: offloaded layers use system RAM and can reduce speed.
  • Ignoring other allocations: parallel requests, other loaded models, or GPU applications can leave less room than expected.
  • Buying by GPU family name: confirm the exact memory variant; cards sharing a GPU name can have different VRAM capacities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a coding model run entirely on my GPU if Ollama shows CPU/GPU?

A CPU/GPU split means Ollama is placing some of the model on the CPU, so it is not fully GPU-resident. Reducing the model or context may allow more GPU placement, but the result depends on your hardware and workload.

Does adding system RAM increase my GPU’s VRAM?

No. System RAM can accommodate CPU-offloaded model layers, but it remains separate from dedicated GPU memory. Offloading can make a model feasible to load while changing performance.

Will a model’s advertised context work on every GPU?

No. A context specification describes a model capability, not the amount of context a particular GPU can run with its available memory. The KV cache and other runtime allocations affect the usable limit.

Can I use the same command for a GGUF model and a Transformers model?

No. The llama.cpp GGUF workflow and a Transformers/bitsandbytes Python workflow use different tools, formats, and configuration. Follow the documentation for the path you choose, including its backend and offload requirements.
