Choose an RTX laptop if your AI project depends on NVIDIA CUDA; choose a MacBook Pro with M5 Max if your software supports Apple Silicon—especially MLX—and you value a larger shared-memory pool. The top listed configurations have very different kinds of memory: 24GB of dedicated GDDR7 on the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU versus up to 128GB of unified memory on an M5 Max MacBook Pro. Neither figure alone tells you which laptop will run a particular model well. Start with your framework and exact dependencies, then check memory needs and the specific machine configuration.
Choose by software compatibility first
The practical question is not simply whether a laptop can run AI locally. It is whether the model, framework, extensions, and supporting tools in your workflow can use that laptop’s hardware.
When an RTX laptop is the better fit
Prefer an RTX laptop when your project requires CUDA libraries, CUDA kernels, or NVIDIA-specific tools. NVIDIA describes CUDA as the software platform and toolkit for GPU-accelerated computing, with libraries and development support for Python and C++. A MacBook’s Apple Silicon GPU is not a CUDA GPU, so a CUDA-dependent project cannot be assumed to work just because it runs Python or uses a popular machine-learning framework. Check the project’s installation instructions and dependencies for the specific GPU backend it supports.
When a MacBook Pro is the better fit
A MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon is a viable local-development platform when your software supports its GPU or CPU backends. MLX is an Apple Silicon framework that supports CPU and GPU operations using shared memory. Its project documentation includes examples for transformer training, LLaMA generation, and LoRA fine-tuning. That makes MLX a genuine development path, but it does not mean every CUDA-first package has an equivalent Mac or MLX implementation.

Before buying, verify the exact package versions, extensions, kernels, and serving tools you plan to use. A workflow that runs on one framework backend may not support another backend’s features or performance characteristics.
How to compare GPU memory with unified memory
An RTX laptop’s listed GPU memory is dedicated memory on the graphics card. A MacBook’s unified memory is a shared pool used by the system’s CPU and GPU. The capacities are therefore not directly interchangeable: the Mac’s total unified-memory figure is not equivalent to the same amount of dedicated VRAM, and the RTX’s VRAM is not the laptop’s entire system memory.

For either platform, model weights are only part of the memory budget. The operating system, framework runtime, context length, and other open tasks also use memory. The model, quantization, context, and software stack all affect whether a workload fits. Check requirements for your specific model and configuration rather than treating a single memory number as a model-size guarantee.
Current hardware and configuration differences
The following figures come from Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications and March 3, 2026 announcement, and NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series laptop specifications. They describe listed configurations, not a direct performance comparison.

Apple Silicon memory is selected at purchase, so choose a configuration that fits your work rather than expecting to add memory later. For RTX laptops, compare the exact GPU power limit and cooling design as well as the GPU name: two laptops with the same RTX GPU label need not have the same implementation.

Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement reports up to 4× faster LLM prompt processing on M5 Pro and M5 Max compared with M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8× AI image generation compared with M1 Pro and M1 Max. These are Apple-published, workload-specific generational comparisons with test notes and selected configurations. They are not comparisons with an RTX laptop.

The cited material does not establish a controlled comparison using the same model, quantization, context length, batch, framework, thermals, and power conditions on both laptop types. There is no defensible single speed winner from these figures. Treat the Apple results as evidence about Apple’s stated comparisons, not as a cross-platform ranking.

How to make the buying decision
- List the software you must run. Check each project’s official installation and dependency documentation for CUDA, MLX, or another supported Mac backend. Mark any CUDA-only requirement; it points toward an RTX laptop.
- Check the memory needs of your actual workload. Look for model-specific guidance covering quantization and context length, and leave room for the operating system, runtime, and other applications. Do not infer a model-size cutoff from the headline memory capacity.
- Compare exact configurations, not platform labels. For an RTX laptop, verify the GPU model, its configured power range, cooling, and the laptop’s memory and storage. For a MacBook Pro, verify the chip, unified-memory tier, storage, and that the configuration you want is offered for the selected model.
- Compare complete machines in your region. Check current configuration prices, display and weight requirements, power profile, SSD capacity, and warranty. Apple specifies configurations, while NVIDIA’s GPU specifications do not set the price or complete design of an OEM laptop; comparable live prices are not established here.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose an RTX laptop when CUDA compatibility is mandatory or your tested packages target NVIDIA GPU acceleration. Check the exact laptop’s power and cooling configuration instead of assuming all RTX models with the same GPU name behave identically.
- Choose a MacBook Pro with M5 Max when your stack supports Apple Silicon or MLX and a large unified-memory configuration is useful to your compatible workload. Select the needed memory tier at purchase and confirm that it is offered on the exact model.
- Choose neither on a benchmark headline alone. The cited Apple performance figures compare selected Apple generations, not a MacBook against an RTX laptop under the same conditions.
