A 12VHPWR cable may fit the card-side connector, but you must still confirm that the cable is approved for your exact power-supply model and seat the plug fully.
What is the RTX 5090’s 12V-2×6 connector?
12V-2×6 is a 16-pin (12+4) GPU power connector. MSI describes it as the updated version of 12VHPWR, with improved insertion detection and the same maximum power output. The change is intended to improve detection of a properly inserted plug; it does not make incomplete or improper connections safe.
PCI-SIG lists a document titled “12V-2×6 Connector Updates to PCIe Base 6.0” dated August 31, 2023. Separately, a January 10, 2023 PCI-SIG notice says it replaced the existing 12VHPWR cable-plug drawings with two options. These are distinct standards events. The public listing reviewed does not provide the full normative connector text, so an exact pin-length difference or millimeter measurement should not be inferred from it.
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page and user guide specify power options and installation steps, but the reviewed NVIDIA pages do not name the card’s receptacle “12V-2×6.” MSI’s technical comparison, dated December 2, 2024, supports the connector comparison and compatibility statements below.

12V-2×6 vs. 12VHPWR: what changed?

These are connector-level distinctions, not a guarantee that every cable with a 12VHPWR label is safe to use with every modular PSU. Modular PSU cable pinouts can vary by model, so confirm support with the PSU manufacturer before connecting a cable.
Can you use a 12VHPWR cable with an RTX 5090?
Potentially, if the cable is explicitly supported for your exact PSU model and meets NVIDIA’s requirements for the connection path. MSI says 12VHPWR cables are downward compatible with 12V-2×6 at the connector level. That does not establish compatibility between a modular cable and every power supply.

For NVIDIA’s direct-cable option, its RTX 5090 product page specifies one PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated at 450W or greater. Check the cable maker’s compatibility list or ask the PSU manufacturer to verify the precise cable and PSU model combination. Do not rely on the plug shape alone.
Direct cable or adapter: which connection should you use?
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page lists an adapter option using three or four PCIe 8-pin cables, as well as the direct PCIe Gen 5 cable option. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition guide has more specific instructions for that card: use only the included NVIDIA adapter and connect at least four independent, dedicated 8-pin PCIe cables from the PSU to it. Follow the documentation for your exact graphics card; Founders Edition adapter instructions should not be assumed to apply to every partner card.

Choose the supported path that you can route and seat correctly in your case. The card-side connector does not prove a modular cable is compatible with your PSU.
Does an RTX 5090 require a new power supply?
NVIDIA lists an 850W minimum system power supply for the RTX 5090 and notes that a higher rating may be needed depending on the rest of the system. That is a system-level minimum, not a universal guarantee that every 850W PSU or cable setup is suitable. Check your PSU’s model-specific cable support and account for your system configuration.

How to connect the RTX 5090 power plug safely
- Check the card instructions. Identify whether your exact RTX 5090 model calls for an included adapter or supports a direct PCIe Gen 5 cable, and confirm the required leads.
- Verify PSU cable compatibility. For a direct cable, confirm with the PSU manufacturer that the specific cable is approved for your exact PSU model. For an adapter, use the required independent PCIe 8-pin leads.
- Connect the cable without obstructing seating. For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA recommends connecting the adapter to the graphics card before installing the card.
- Seat the plug fully. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 Founders Edition guide says: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.” Route the cable so it does not pull the plug sideways or prevent it from sitting flush.
A revised connector is not a substitute for correct cable selection and full seating. MSI’s stated improvement is insertion detection; the sources do not establish that 12V-2×6 eliminates connector damage or quantify a reduction in failure rates.
