How do they compare in gaming performance?

Rasterized games

For gaming without ray tracing, GamersNexus found the RTX 5080 and RX 7900 XTX commonly within 10% across its tested comparisons, but individual results varied by game. Some titles favored the 5080; others were effectively tied or favored the 7900 XTX. Treat that as a summary of that review’s games and test setup, not a promise for every title or resolution. Read the GamersNexus RTX 5080 review and comparisons.

If you mainly play a small set of games, look for benchmarks of those specific titles at your target resolution and settings. A small average lead across a review suite may not matter as much as which card performs better in the games you actually play.

Ray tracing

The RTX 5080 is the safer choice if demanding ray tracing is a priority. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy ranks it ahead of the RX 7900 XTX in its separate ray-tracing table, and GamersNexus’ direct comparisons also show an NVIDIA advantage. The size of the gap depends on the game and how demanding its ray-tracing implementation is; lighter effects can make the 7900 XTX more competitive. These are results from the cited benchmark suites, not an all-games guarantee. See Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy.

Upscaling and frame generation

NVIDIA lists DLSS 4 features for the RTX 5080, including Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation. AMD lists FSR and Radeon software features for the RX 7900 XTX. Support, image quality, and available modes vary by game, so check the titles you play and decide whether you prefer the options each one offers.

VRAM: the RX 7900 XTX has more capacity

The RX 7900 XTX has 24GB of GDDR6; the RTX 5080 has 16GB of GDDR7. That gives AMD’s card an 8GB capacity advantage, which may matter in unusually memory-heavy games or creator workloads. Capacity alone does not establish which card will deliver higher frame rates: performance also depends on the workload and the rest of each GPU’s design.

Power use and system compatibility

In GamersNexus’ FFXIV test at 4K, the RTX 5080 recorded 298W and 0.34 FPS/W, while the RX 7900 XTX recorded 430W and 0.24 FPS/W. These are measurements from that particular game and review setup; they should not be treated as universal power draw or efficiency figures. The review includes its test details.

PSU guidance also depends on the complete system. NVIDIA specifies an 850W minimum for the RTX 5080 and notes that a higher-rated supply may be needed depending on configuration. AMD specifies a minimum 800W or greater for a system configured with a Ryzen 9 5900X and typical components, with stated 12V output requirements. These recommendations are not interchangeable guarantees for every PC.

  • Check the exact card’s power limit, connectors, and manufacturer guidance.
  • Confirm your PSU can support the full system, not just the GPU.
  • Measure case clearance and account for airflow and cooling.

Compare current prices and exact card models

There is no reliable value verdict without current regional pricing. GamersNexus’ price observations date to January 2025 and do not establish prices in October 2026. Compare the delivered price of the exact model from sellers in your region, along with warranty terms, card dimensions, cooling, and power requirements. A RTX 5080 card and an RX 7900 XTX card can vary substantially by board partner.
