The RTX 5080’s $999 launch starting price was just under half the RTX 5090’s $1,999 launch starting price, announced by NVIDIA for January 30, 2025 availability. That is a launch-price comparison, not a statement about current retail prices. In HotHardware’s Page 3 tests, the RTX 5080 beat the RTX 4080 in several named synthetic and VR benchmarks, while the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 remained ahead in the cited results.
What “half the price” means
NVIDIA announced launch starting prices of $999 for the GeForce RTX 5080 and $1,999 for the RTX 5090, for January 30, 2025 availability. The 5080’s figure is just under half the 5090’s. These are dated launch prices, not verified current retail prices; actual availability and pricing can vary by retailer and card model. NVIDIA’s announcement is the reference for those launch figures.
How the RTX 5080 performed in Page 3’s tests
HotHardware’s January 29, 2025 RTX 5080 Founders Edition review page reports results from UL 3DMark graphics tests and VR benchmarks. These results describe the review’s test setup and default settings; they are not a single score for gaming performance across all systems.
| Benchmark | HotHardware’s reported result |
|---|---|
| 3DMark Speed Way | RTX 5080 was approximately 20% ahead of RTX 4080. |
| 3DMark Steel Nomad | RTX 5080 was about 19% ahead of RTX 4080. |
| UNIGINE Superposition VR Future | RTX 5080 finished in the middle of the tested pack. |
| UL VRMark Blue Room | RTX 5080 beat RTX 4080 by about 13% and finished behind RTX 4090. |
Across the cited results, HotHardware reports the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 ahead of the RTX 5080. The specific gains over the RTX 4080 vary by benchmark, which is why they should not be treated as a universal percentage advantage in games. HotHardware’s Page 3 results provide the benchmark context.

Why benchmark results do not predict every game
3DMark and VR benchmark scores reflect particular workloads, systems, settings, and software versions. Game results can differ with the title, CPU, resolution, graphics settings, driver, and whether features such as DLSS are enabled. Synthetic tests are useful for comparing performance under their own conditions; they do not replace game-specific benchmarks for the titles and settings a buyer cares about.
RTX 5080 versus RTX 5090: capacity and power
Price is only one part of the comparison. NVIDIA’s current reference specifications list substantially different memory capacities and power requirements for the two cards.

These are NVIDIA’s published reference figures, not guarantees for every partner card. NVIDIA’s RTX 5080 specifications include 10,752 CUDA cores and 960 GB/s memory bandwidth as well as its reference power and fit guidance. The RTX 5090 specifications list its power and memory details. Graphics-card power figures are not the same thing as the recommended system PSU wattage.

For NVIDIA’s RTX 5080 reference card, the listed dimensions are 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and two slots thick. NVIDIA specifies either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated at 450 W or greater, alongside its 850 W system-power guidance. Add-in-card models can differ in size, connector requirements, and power limits.

- Confirm the PSU meets the card maker’s wattage and connector requirements; do not assume the reference-card guidance applies unchanged to every model.
- Leave room for the power cable and adapter where the card enters the case, and follow the card and PSU manufacturers’ connection instructions.
NVIDIA notes that its published RTX 5080 specifications represent the Founders Edition or reference design and that add-in-card specifications vary. Verify the manufacturer’s product listing for the particular card before choosing a PSU or checking case compatibility.
