In a reported 2025 test of an external GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, OCuLink delivered higher throughput and game performance than Thunderbolt 5. Across 12 games, Thunderbolt 5 averaged about 13–14% behind OCuLink. That is a result from one desktop test setup—not a guarantee of the difference on a laptop or another eGPU configuration.
What the RTX 5070 Ti eGPU test found
Tom’s Hardware reported Try Some Tech’s comparison on October 4, 2025. In that test, OCuLink led Thunderbolt 5 in measured transfer throughput and average frame rates. The reported averages do not mean every game or host will show the same gap.
| Connection or result | Reported finding |
|---|---|
| OCuLink throughput | About 6.6 GB/s host-to-device and 6.7 GB/s device-to-host in the tested setup. |
| Thunderbolt 5 throughput | About 5.6 GB/s host-to-device and 5.8 GB/s device-to-host in the tested setup. |
| Thunderbolt 5 vs. OCuLink in 12 games | Thunderbolt 5 averaged roughly 13–14% lower performance. |
| Thunderbolt 5 vs. native desktop PCIe | Thunderbolt 5 was reported 19–25% behind, with a 36% drop in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. |
Tom’s Hardware reported larger Thunderbolt 5 losses in Spider-Man: Miles Morales (about 20% behind OCuLink) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (about 23% behind). Ghost of Tsushima was the exception: all three configurations reached 120 FPS, which the report attributed to a likely CPU performance ceiling in that result. These are summaries of the same test, not independent replications. Tom’s Hardware’s report of Try Some Tech’s test provides the benchmark context.
How to interpret the results
This was a desktop comparison, not a laptop benchmark
The host was a desktop built around an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K, a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, and a motherboard with two Thunderbolt 5 ports. The GPU was tested over native desktop PCIe, OCuLink, and Thunderbolt 5; the Thunderbolt 5 enclosure was a PELADN Link S-3. The report says the enclosure did not include a proper cable.

- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
The tester did not have compatible laptops for the comparison. As a result, the figures do not establish what an RTX 5070 Ti eGPU will deliver on a particular laptop, dock, operating system, or game. Notebookcheck’s October 3, 2025 coverage describes the source as an early video test and summarizes practical OCuLink caveats; it is not a separate benchmark replication. Notebookcheck’s summary discusses those setup limitations.
Headline bandwidth figures are not the same as observed throughput
Intel’s 2023 Thunderbolt 5 brief lists 80 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth for data and a PCIe data capability of 64 Gbps. Its display-focused Bandwidth Boost can rebalance the connection to up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive. The 120 Gbps figure describes a display-traffic mode; it is not the eGPU’s data bandwidth. Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief explains these distinct capabilities.

The test’s measured throughput was lower than the headline interface figures. Tom’s Hardware attributes the gap between Thunderbolt and OCuLink to protocol overhead and describes OCuLink as a direct PCIe connection. That is the report’s interpretation, not a controlled breakdown of every factor affecting performance.

- Choose around your host first. Confirm that the computer has the required Thunderbolt 5 or OCuLink support and that the eGPU enclosure or dock explicitly supports that host and connection. The test’s desktop motherboard support does not establish compatibility with other computers.
- Consider how you use the port. Intel describes Thunderbolt as a USB-C connection supporting multiple protocols, including display and data, with charging capabilities. That versatility can matter if the same connection must serve other devices or display needs.
- Account for OCuLink setup friction. OCuLink provides the more direct PCIe path in this comparison, but Notebookcheck flags cable compatibility and lack of hot-swapping as drawbacks. Match the cable and connectors to the exact host and dock rather than assuming one cable fits every setup.
- Check what the enclosure includes. The tested PELADN Link S-3 reportedly lacked a proper cable. Verify the current contents and requirements of any enclosure you consider; the test does not establish current product availability or suitability for your hardware.
For a performance decision, treat the reported 13–14% average difference as a useful result from this particular desktop and 12-game suite—not a prediction for your own system. Host compatibility, enclosure support, cable fit, and your need for Thunderbolt’s broader USB-C functions may matter as much as the benchmark.
