For most local-AI buyers, the RTX 3090 is the better value when it costs meaningfully less than a comparable RTX 3090 Ti. Both have 24 GB of GDDR6X, so the Ti does not offer more memory for fitting a larger model. It has stronger reference specifications, but also a higher power budget. Pay extra for the Ti only when its price premium is modest, you value its potential speed edge, and your system can handle its power and cooling needs.

What matters most for local AI?

For choosing a card to run models locally, start with memory capacity: it is a key constraint on which models and settings can fit in GPU memory. The RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti each have 24 GB of GDDR6X. Neither has an inherent capacity advantage, although actual fit depends on quantization, context length, runtime overhead, KV cache, and other GPU workloads.

The Ti’s higher bandwidth, boost clock, and CUDA-core count may help performance, but specifications alone do not establish how much faster it will be in a particular AI task. Inference, prompt processing, training, quantization, software backend, temperature, and power limits can all affect results. No controlled, directly comparable local-AI benchmark establishes a fixed tokens-per-second gain for the Ti.

RTX 3090 vs. RTX 3090 Ti specifications

NVIDIA’s official reference specifications show the shared memory capacity and the Ti’s higher reference throughput and power requirements. Board-partner cards can differ, so check the exact model before buying.

Specification RTX 3090 RTX 3090 Ti What it means
Memory 24 GB GDDR6X 24 GB GDDR6X Same nominal capacity for model fit.
Memory interface 384-bit 384-bit Same bus width.
Memory bandwidth 936 GB/s 1,008 GB/s The Ti has higher reference bandwidth; that is not a measured AI speed result.
CUDA cores 10,496 10,752 The Ti has a modestly higher count.
Reference boost clock 1.70 GHz 1.86 GHz The Ti has the higher reference clock.
Architecture / CUDA capability Ampere / 8.6 Ampere / 8.6 Same generation and capability class.
Reference graphics card power 350 W 450 W The Ti’s reference power budget is 100 W higher.
NVIDIA recommended system power 750 W 850 W Based on NVIDIA’s stated Intel Core i9-10900K system configuration, not a universal PSU-sizing rule.
Reference power connectors 2x PCIe 8-pin; adapter to 1x 12-pin included 3x PCIe 8-pin cables with adapter in box, or 450 W+ PCIe Gen 5 cable Confirm the requirements for the specific card and PSU.

NVIDIA notes that its power requirement is based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i9-10900K and that a lower rating may work depending on system configuration. See NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti specifications for the official reference figures.

Is the RTX 3090 Ti worth paying extra for?

It can be, if the price gap between comparable cards is small and you can accommodate the Ti’s higher power budget. Its reference bandwidth is 1,008 GB/s rather than 936 GB/s, and it also has a higher boost clock and slightly more CUDA cores. Those are reasons to consider it, not proof of a particular local-AI speedup.

If the Ti costs substantially more, the 3090 keeps the same 24 GB memory capacity while carrying a lower NVIDIA reference graphics-card power rating. For a used purchase, compare actual offers in your market rather than relying on general price ranges: published price guidance differs, and it does not establish today’s comparable local listings. Match condition, warranty, seller returns, and cooling class before treating two prices as a fair comparison.

Check power, cooling, and the exact card

The 3090 Ti’s higher reference power rating can require more PSU headroom and may mean more heat or noise during sustained workloads. Actual draw and cooling vary by add-in-board model and workload. Do not size a PSU from the GPU figure alone; account for the complete system and use the cable arrangement required by the exact card.

A practical buying decision

  1. Compare the prices of the exact 3090 and 3090 Ti options in the same market.
  2. Make the comparison fair: account for condition, warranty, seller returns, and cooling class.
  3. Confirm that 24 GB is sufficient for your model, quantization, context, and runtime overhead; neither card has more VRAM than the other.
  4. Check workload-specific benchmark evidence if performance is the reason to choose the Ti. Do not treat its paper specifications as a guaranteed AI throughput percentage.
  5. Weigh the Ti’s price premium and performance potential against its higher power, cooling, and system-compatibility demands.

Choose the RTX 3090 when it is meaningfully cheaper and its condition and protections are comparable. Choose the RTX 3090 Ti when the premium is modest, the higher reference specifications matter to your workloads, and your system is ready for it.
