RPCS3 runs supported PS3 games locally on a compatible computer; PlayStation Plus Premium streams eligible PS3 Classics Catalog games from Sony. Choose RPCS3 if you want local play and your exact game release and computer are supported. Choose Premium if the game is in your region’s current catalog and you have a supported device, an active subscription, and a suitable internet connection. Neither route makes a PS5 play PS3 discs natively.
RPCS3 and Premium do different things
RPCS3 is an open-source, multi-platform PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. It runs games locally on supported computers, including Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. Performance depends on the computer and the game; the emulator’s official site cautions that results vary by device.

PlayStation Plus Premium is a subscription service. Its eligible PS3 Classics Catalog games are streamed rather than installed and run as native PS3 software. Sony describes the PS3 Classics Catalog as “available via streaming only” on its US PlayStation Plus games page.
| Question | RPCS3 | PlayStation Plus Premium |
|---|---|---|
| How does it run? | Local emulation on a compatible computer. | Cloud streaming from Sony’s service. |
| Which games can I access? | Check compatibility for the exact game ID and release; a legitimate game source is also needed. | Eligible PS3 Classics Catalog titles available in your region and on your device. |
| What do I need? | A compatible computer and a game release that works adequately on it. | An active Premium subscription, a supported device, broadband, and an eligible title. |
| Does it play PS3 discs on a PS5? | No. RPCS3 runs on a computer. | No. PS3 titles are streamed from the catalog, not played from a PS3 disc. |
| What affects availability? | Game release, compatibility updates, and computer performance. | Subscription, catalog, region, device support, and network quality. |
Can I play PS3 games on PC?
Yes, with RPCS3, if the specific release is compatible and the computer performs well enough. The project lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD as supported platforms on its official site. “Supported platform” does not mean every game will run smoothly on every computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
- When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
- 160GB system
- Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
- The best high-definition viewing experience available
Check the game’s compatibility before choosing hardware. RPCS3’s Game Compatibility page, edited September 30, 2026, tracks entries by Game ID and game media, not just by title. A disc release and a digital release with the same name can have different records. Its “Playable” status means a game can be completed with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches; it is a project label, not a promise of identical results on every PC.
- Find the game’s exact release or Game ID.
- Search for that entry on the RPCS3 compatibility list.
- Read the game-specific notes and check the status for the media you own or plan to use.
- Consult the current RPCS3 quickstart and project guidance before buying computer hardware. The detailed minimum requirements on the project’s FAQ date to April 29, 2020, so they should not be treated as a current shopping specification.
Compatibility statuses and notes change as the project is updated. Some games remain unsupported or have incomplete features, so the exact entry matters more than a broad claim that a title “works on RPCS3.”

Can PS5 play PS3 games?
PS5 can stream eligible PS3 titles through PlayStation Plus Premium where the title, account region, and service support align. It does not natively run PS3 discs. Sony’s US PS Plus games page identifies PS3 Classics Catalog games as streaming-only; its cloud-streaming information lists PS5 as a device for eligible PS3 streaming.
Before subscribing for a particular game, check the catalog available in your country and confirm that the title can be streamed on your device. Sony notes that catalog content varies by region and over time, and not every catalog title is streamable. A PS5 alone does not guarantee access to any specific PS3 game.

Can I play PS3 games on PS Portal?
No, not through Portal cloud streaming as described by Sony’s current support information. Sony says that Portal cloud streaming supports select PS5 titles, not PS3 titles; see its cloud-streaming page. Do not confuse PS5 game streaming on Portal with access to Sony’s PS3 Classics Catalog.
What does PS Plus Premium streaming require?
You need an active Premium membership, a supported device, a streamable catalog title, and broadband. Sony’s US materials list a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p. These are service requirements, not a guarantee of smooth streaming: Sony says connection and quality can vary with the network. Check Sony’s getting-started information and catalog access support for current details in your region.

In the US materials, Sony describes streaming supported catalog games on PS4, PS5, or PC. That does not mean each PS3 title works on every listed device; device and title eligibility still matter. Regional availability also differs, and Sony’s cloud-streaming page is served for Japan, so verify local service terms rather than assuming its availability applies everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is an original PS3 still an option?
Yes. A working PS3 is the native-console route for playing PS3 discs locally. Sony’s PS3 system software support page listed version 4.93 as current on October 7, 2026, and provides official update methods. The condition and reliability of an individual used console vary; verify the hardware and disc drive before buying.
