RPCS3’s current FAQ lists an x64 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a graphics card with Vulkan 1.2 support as minimum requirements. For a better starting point, the project’s detailed desktop guidance recommends a six-core/12-thread CPU or better and a supported Vulkan GPU. Neither baseline guarantees smooth performance in every game: check the compatibility status of the specific PS3 title you want to play before upgrading or buying a PC.

The current FAQ’s listing is the clearest baseline for minimum hardware. The older Quickstart gives more detail on recommended generations and configurations, but its guidance is not a game-by-game performance guarantee. Its older absolute-minimum section also lists OpenGL 4.3 graphics and 4 GB of RAM; those dated details should not override the FAQ’s current 8 GB and Vulkan 1.2 minimum listing.
What CPU do you need for RPCS3?
Start with the processor: RPCS3’s published recommendations emphasize a capable multi-core CPU. The Quickstart recommends six cores and 12 threads or more, with AMD Zen 2-or-newer and Intel Skylake-or-newer processors as generation guidance. These are not performance rankings: processors from the same generation can differ, and RPCS3 does not promise that every CPU meeting the guidance will run every game well.
The Quickstart accepts x64 CPUs in its absolute-minimum discussion, but cautions that processors without AVX2 and with fewer than four cores/eight threads are expected to perform very badly overall. That lower floor is about attempting to run software, not a sensible target for choosing a PC.

What GPU and drivers work with RPCS3?
The current listed minimum is a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.2. For a recommended desktop configuration, the Quickstart names actively supported Vulkan-compatible AMD Polaris/RX 400-series-or-newer and NVIDIA Maxwell/GTX 900-series-or-newer graphics. The generation alone does not establish that a particular card and operating-system driver combination is suitable.
Check the RPCS3 graphics-driver documentation for the GPU family, operating system and driver implementation you plan to use. It separates actively supported, legacy and unsupported drivers; status varies by vendor and driver stack. The wiki specifically describes proprietary Intel OpenGL and Vulkan drivers as unsupported. Confirm the actual API and driver path on the system rather than relying only on a GPU’s product name.

How much RAM and storage does RPCS3 need?
The current FAQ lists 8 GB of RAM minimum, and the Quickstart recommends at least 8 GB in a dual-channel configuration. Dual-channel is highly recommended over single-channel. Before upgrading, verify your computer’s supported memory generation, form factor and maximum capacity; those depend on the motherboard or laptop.
The Quickstart recommends using an SSD for emulator data, while games may be stored on an SSD or HDD. Its dated storage estimates are 512 MB for base emulator data, 5 GB for the virtual console cache, and about 128 MB of cache and user data per installed game on average. Some games need more and most need less. These figures help with space planning; they do not establish that an SSD guarantees faster emulation.

Can a laptop run RPCS3?
RPCS3’s Quickstart strongly recommends a desktop over a laptop. For an optimal laptop experience, its guidance calls for an 8-core/16-thread, 35 W-or-higher H-series CPU and a compatible dedicated Vulkan GPU. It warns that even four-core laptops may not deliver good performance.
The guide’s Intel Core i7-10870H and AMD Ryzen 7 5800H examples come from its December 5, 2021 copy; treat them as examples of the stated class, not as a current buying shortlist. Laptop performance also depends on sustained power and cooling, so a processor’s name alone cannot settle whether a particular model will work well.

Check the game and setup requirements before upgrading
Hardware requirements cannot tell you whether one particular PS3 game will be playable. Use the RPCS3 compatibility database to check the title you intend to run, then compare your PC’s CPU, graphics API and driver support, RAM configuration, and—on a laptop—its dedicated GPU and cooling. The project does not provide a universal performance guarantee for systems below its recommendations.
PC hardware is only part of setup. RPCS3 requires official PlayStation 3 system software, which the project does not distribute; its Quickstart directs users to obtain it from PlayStation and install it through RPCS3. The guide also says games must be dumped from the user’s own console or computer using a compatible Blu-ray drive. Legal rules vary by country.
