Is my PS3 game playable in RPCS3?
RPCS3 is a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. Its project FAQ says some commercial games can be played and directs users to the official compatibility list for game-specific status. A game’s presence in the list is not a guarantee that it will work on every computer or RPCS3 build.
The list tracks compatibility by Game ID and game media, rather than by title alone. As the project’s compatibility documentation puts it, “We track compatibility per Game IDs batched by Game Media, and not per Game Title.” A disc release and a digital release of the same game can therefore have separate entries and different statuses.
- Find the game’s exact release in the live list. Match its Game ID and media type (disc or digital); use any region or release-variant details shown in the entry.
- Read that entry’s current status and notes. Do not transfer the result to another edition just because the title is the same.
- For questions about a specific game or its reported behavior, follow the project FAQ’s suggestion to consult the relevant RPCS3 forums. The FAQ cautions against relying on estimates or guesses about when future support will arrive.
What the status counts mean
The project’s September 2026 monthly snapshot lists these classifications. They are counts of list entries under RPCS3’s rules, not a count of unique commercial titles or a promise of performance on a particular system.

RPCS3’s monthly statistics exclude online-only games classified as Intro, Loadable, or Nothing and apply additional counting rules, including for merged regional entries and entries that are not PS3 games. Check the live entry for the edition you have rather than treating the aggregate as the share of every PS3 release that will work for you.
What do I need to run RPCS3?
Use the project’s Quickstart to confirm current requirements and setup steps. The FAQ’s system-requirements section was last edited April 29, 2020, so its specifications are historical guidance rather than a reliable statement of current requirements.

That older FAQ named an x64 CPU, a 64-bit operating system, and graphics support for OpenGL 4.3, while recommending a modern Vulkan-compatible graphics card. The project’s current repository overview describes RPCS3 as written for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, in contrast with the older FAQ’s platform description. For your operating system and hardware, rely on the Quickstart and current project documentation rather than assuming the 2020 list still applies.
The repository README also advises keeping graphics drivers up to date and says Windows users should install the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022. See the RPCS3 repository alongside the Quickstart for current project guidance.

How do firmware and game files fit in?
RPCS3’s official wiki index links to guides for dumping PlayStation 3 games and validating game dumps; the project also points users to its Quickstart for setup. Consult those official resources for instructions. This FAQ cannot establish the current steps for installing firmware, preparing a backup, or handling a particular copy, so it would be unwise to infer a procedure from compatibility status alone.
Are PS3 firmware and game backups legal?
There is no universal answer established here. Whether making or using a firmware or game backup is lawful depends on the law and circumstances in the relevant jurisdiction. The RPCS3 FAQ’s legal warning concerns connecting to PlayStation Network and its technical and legal limitations; it does not determine whether a particular backup, download, or circumvention activity is permitted. Check current authoritative guidance for your location or consult a qualified legal professional. Do not treat emulator setup instructions as legal advice.

Can I use controllers or play locally with others?
Yes. The RPCS3 FAQ, last edited April 29, 2020, says local multiplayer is possible with up to seven concurrent controllers and that input can be mixed—for example, one player using a keyboard while another uses a gamepad. A PC-compatible USB game controller is optional; the cited FAQ does not recommend a particular model or establish compatibility for every controller or adapter.
