Choose an AUV when a mission can follow a preplanned route and the team can retrieve its recorded data later. Choose an ROV when an operator needs live feedback and direct control to inspect, sample, or handle something underwater. The practical difference is the control-and-data link: an ROV is tethered to a surface vessel; an AUV operates untethered during its survey.

What is the difference between an AUV and a ROV?

An AUV is an autonomous underwater vehicle. It follows a programmed mission without continuous operator intervention, typically recording survey data onboard for retrieval after surfacing or recovery. An ROV, or remotely operated vehicle, is controlled from a ship through a tether that carries commands to the vehicle and returns information such as live video.

NOAA summarizes the AUV role this way: “An AUV conducts its survey mission without operator intervention.” NOAA National Ocean Service describes the ROV tether as the link between the operator and vehicle; NOAA Ocean Exploration explains that it sends electrical signals in both directions in its page on what an ROV is.

Which vehicle fits the mission?

Mission need Usually favors Why
Run a planned survey or map an area AUV It can follow a programmed route and collect data for later retrieval. NOAA lists identifying submerged wrecks, rocks, and obstructions among AUV survey uses. Source
Watch live video and steer in response to what appears ROV The tether supports commands from the operator and returns live information during the dive. NOAA Ocean Exploration
Inspect a hull or identify an object closely ROV Live observation and remote steering can support close inspection; NOAA identifies vessel-hull inspection and hydrographic object identification as common uses. Source
Collect a sample or physically handle an object ROV, if equipped for the task Some ROVs carry tools such as an articulating arm. NOAA describes arms used to retrieve small objects, cut lines, or attach lifting hooks; these are not standard equipment on every ROV. Source
Operate without a connecting cable during the survey AUV Untethered operation is a defining feature of the typical AUV survey model. Mission communications and autonomy still depend on the specific vehicle.

These are mission-selection tendencies, not universal engineering limits. AUVs and ROVs vary in sensors, navigation, payload, operating depth, endurance, and support requirements.

How the tether changes control and data

With an AUV, plan first and retrieve data afterward

NOAA describes AUVs as untethered vehicles programmed for a survey. They record collected data onboard, which researchers retrieve after the vehicle surfaces or is recovered. That workflow suits missions where the route and task can be defined in advance and a live piloting view is not essential. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s AUV overview explains this model.

Untethered does not mean every AUV is incapable of communicating during a mission. The general descriptions emphasize preplanning and onboard data storage; communications and autonomy features vary by vehicle.

With an ROV, the operator stays in the loop

An ROV’s tether carries control signals down to the vehicle and information back to the ship. This lets the operator respond to what the vehicle’s cameras or sensors reveal, which is useful when the next action depends on seeing a particular object or condition. ROVs can provide imagery, physical data, and biological or geological samples, depending on their configuration. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s ROV overview describes these uses.

What to verify for the actual vehicles

“ROV” and “AUV” describe operating approaches, not a universal specification sheet. Before selecting a system, match the mission to the capabilities documented for the specific vehicle and its planned configuration.

  • Mission and control: Can the task be preprogrammed, or must a pilot make decisions from live observations?
  • Data timing: Is onboard recording with download after recovery sufficient, or does the team need live video or other information during the dive?
  • Sensors and tools: Check the actual imaging, survey sensors, sample equipment, and manipulators fitted—not just the vehicle category.
  • Operating limits: Confirm the candidate vehicle’s depth rating, endurance, range, and payload in its manufacturer or operator documentation. The sources cited here do not establish class-wide values for these specifications.
  • Deployment and recovery: Determine what vessel, tether handling, launch and recovery equipment, and recovery plan the mission requires.

For example, NOAA Ocean Exploration says its named Sentry AUV surveys seafloor topographic features to 6,000 meters. That is a specification for Sentry, not a typical or guaranteed AUV depth. NOAA’s AUV page provides the example.

Can one vehicle work as both an ROV and an AUV?

Some vehicles are designed for more than one operating mode, but the categories should not be treated as interchangeable. NOAA’s April 2025 vehicle summary sheets describe NUI as a hybrid that can operate tethered as an ROV or untethered as an AUV; the sheets state a distance of up to 40 kilometers from the ship in tethered or autonomous configurations. NOAA also identifies Mesobot as a hybrid ROV/AUV. These are named vehicle examples, not general hybrid specifications. NOAA vehicle summary sheets

A quick decision sequence

  1. Decide whether live piloting is essential. If the operator must steer in reaction to live video or sensor feedback, prioritize an ROV configuration.
  2. Decide whether the task requires physical intervention. If the vehicle must collect or handle something, verify that the candidate ROV carries the specific tool required.
  3. Decide whether a preplanned survey is enough. If the mission can run independently and recorded data can be retrieved later, evaluate AUVs.
  4. Check the actual system, not the label. Compare verified depth, endurance, sensors, payload, navigation, deployment, and recovery requirements against the mission plan.
