What is the Rough Notation JavaScript library?
The npm package rough-notation lets developers add visual annotations to webpage elements, such as an underline or other hand-drawn-style mark. Its package description says the appearance is created with RoughJS. Animation can be configured or turned off.
It is intended for highlighting content in a web interface, not for writing mathematical notation or music. The package listing reports version 0.5.1 and says it was published six years before the retrieved listing; that does not establish the latest version, current maintenance status, or compatibility with a particular project.
How do you use Rough Notation in JavaScript?
The package listing documents installation with npm and loading it either as an ES module or as an IIFE script. Its basic example selects an element, creates an annotation, and calls show().

npm install --save rough-notation, or use one of the package page’s documented script-loading approaches. -
Select the element you want to mark. For example:

Create an annotation and display it:

The configuration can include animation settings; the package listing describes controlling the animation duration or disabling animation. Consult the package documentation for the complete options and syntax supported by the version you install.
Watch for layout problems inside tables
Rough Notation adds its SVG output as a sibling of the annotated element. The package documentation warns this can cause trouble in a table. If an annotation disrupts the table layout, wrap the target content in an inner <span> or <div> and annotate that wrapper instead.
What does “rough notation” mean in mathematics?
In mathematical writing, “rough notation” does not name one universal notation system. It can refer to a convention defined for a specific discussion. For example, an additive-combinatorics source defines rough equivalence between finite sets using an overlap condition that depends on a constant. Another exposition uses rough notation for approximate comparisons governed by a roughness parameter. The relevant text supplies the meaning; these conventions are unrelated to the JavaScript package.

Can “rough notation” refer to handwritten music?
Yes. The phrase can simply describe an informal or incomplete way of writing music, rather than a formal notation system. In a National Archives podcast transcript, a speaker identified as Oliver describes someone writing tunes from memory as “very rough notation.” The passage is descriptive; it does not identify a system called Rough Notation.
