Ross Freeman, Xilinx co-founder and inventor of the field-programmable gate array (FPGA), was inducted posthumously into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2009. The honor recognized an invention that lets engineers reprogram hardware after it has been manufactured.
Who was Ross Freeman?
Freeman was an American engineer who co-founded Xilinx with James Barnett and Bernard Vonderschmitt. Freeman and Barnett first discussed starting a company during a business trip to Hong Kong in January 1983; Xilinx was incorporated on January 9, 1984. AMD’s history of Xilinx describes the company’s early development.
Freeman was born July 26, 1948, and died October 22, 1989. His contribution to semiconductor design was recognized after his death.

What did Freeman invent?
Freeman invented the field-programmable gate array, or FPGA. The National Inventors Hall of Fame associates the invention with U.S. Patent No. 4,870,302. Its official Freeman profile describes an FPGA as a chip with “open gates” that engineers can reprogram to add functionality, adapt to changing standards or specifications, and make last-minute design changes.

When and how was he honored?
Freeman was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2009. Xilinx announced his selection, as EE Times reported on February 12, 2009. His mother, Ethel, and brother, Fred Freeman, accepted the award on his behalf, according to Xcell Journal.
Why did the FPGA matter?
An FPGA can be configured after fabrication, so engineers can test a design in manufactured silicon and reprogram it if requirements change. That flexibility is useful when standards evolve or a product needs a hardware revision without designing and manufacturing a new fixed-function chip.

- Arty A7 comes in two FPGA variants: Arty A7-35T features Xilinx XC7A35TICSG324-1L. Arty A7-100T features the larger Xilinx XC7A100TCSG324-1.
- Internal clock speeds exceeding 450MHz, On-chip analog-to-digital converter (XADC), Programmable over JTAG and Quad-SPI Flash
- 256MB DDR3L with a 16-bit bus @ 667MHz, 16MB Quad-SPI Flash, USB-JTAG Programming circuitry, Powered from USB or any 7V-15V source
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, USB-UART Bridge
- 4 Switches, 4 Buttons, 1 Reset Button, 4 LEDs, 4 RGB LEDs, 4 Pmod connectors, shield connector
The trade-off is that an FPGA can use transistors less efficiently than a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed for one fixed task. AMD’s history of Xilinx characterizes Freeman’s goal as providing a more cost-effective alternative to fixed-function ASIC design and notes that FPGAs helped pioneer the fabless semiconductor model. The key distinction is flexibility after manufacture versus optimization for a predetermined function.

What is the Ross Freeman Award?
Xilinx established the Ross Freeman Award for Technical Innovation in 1992 to memorialize Freeman. EE Times reported that employees could nominate innovations across integrated circuits, intellectual property, software products, processes, programs, and equipment. A technical-leadership committee selected finalists, and technical employees voted for the winners. EE Times’ 2009 report describes the award’s process.
