No—most people with a Samsung Smart TV do not need a Roku just to stream. Samsung TVs have their own app platform. A Roku can still be useful if you prefer its interface, need an app that is unavailable on your particular TV, or want a streaming player you can move between TVs. You can connect a Roku to a Samsung TV through HDMI, and supported setups can use the Samsung universal remote to control it.
What each device does
A Samsung Smart TV provides streaming apps through Samsung’s TV platform. Samsung has an app store, but you can install only apps available for your particular TV; availability can vary by model and region. Check the apps listed for your exact TV before buying another device. Samsung’s app support page explains how to find and manage apps.
A Roku player is an additional streaming interface that connects to the TV’s HDMI port. It does not replace the television, and it is not automatically a picture-quality upgrade: if the Samsung TV already supports the same video formats, adding Roku alone does not establish that the picture will improve.
When adding a Roku makes sense
- You want Roku’s interface. If you prefer its menus or search experience, you can use it on the Samsung TV instead of navigating the TV’s built-in platform for streaming.
- An app you want is missing from your TV. App availability depends on the exact Samsung model and region. Confirm that the app is available on the Roku model you plan to use before purchasing.
- You want portability. A Roku player can be unplugged and connected to another compatible TV, which may be useful when moving between rooms or taking it along while traveling.
- You need a specific supported video format. Roku Streaming Stick 4K advertises 4K, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+. Those features matter only when the TV, selected HDMI input, and streaming content support the relevant format.
Check 4K and HDR compatibility before choosing
Roku says Streaming Stick 4K model 3820 works with a TV that has an HDMI port. It will still work if the TV lacks 4K or HDR support, but those picture features will not display. Roku lists Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, and HLG support for the product, subject to compatible equipment and content. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that a particular Samsung TV or show will use every format. See Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K specifications and its TV and HDMI requirements.

On supported Samsung TVs, the 4K-connected HDMI port may need UHD HDMI Color enabled; Samsung also labels this setting Input Signal Plus. The menu path and availability vary by model. Samsung’s device-connection instructions describe the setting for supported TVs. A separate Premium High Speed HDMI cable is recommended by Roku for certain 4K/HDR player setups; a Streaming Stick plugs directly into the TV and does not need that separate cable.
Connect Roku to a Samsung TV
- Plug the Roku into an available HDMI port. For a Streaming Stick, connect it directly to the TV and attach power as directed in its setup instructions.
- Select that HDMI input on the TV. Use the Samsung remote’s source or input controls and choose the port where Roku is connected.
- Complete Roku setup and activation. Follow the on-screen steps to connect to your network and activate the device with a Roku account. Roku says an account is free and there is no activation fee.
- If needed, configure Samsung’s universal remote. Samsung documents control of supported HDMI-connected devices, including Roku, after setup. The exact steps and available controls depend on the TV, remote, and configuration; some setups may rely on HDMI-CEC. See Samsung’s universal-remote instructions and Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K setup guide.

- Add Roku if its interface is your preference, it provides an app you cannot get on your TV, or portability is useful to you.
- Check specifications first if your reason is 4K or HDR: match the Roku’s supported formats to the TV, HDMI input settings, and content you actually watch.
