If your Roku TV suddenly makes movies look unnaturally smooth, check Action Smoothing first: Roku recommends setting it to Low or Off for films. Roku says some software updates can change motion or picture defaults, but the available evidence does not establish that a particular update caused a widespread defect. One September 2026 report from a TCL Roku TV owner is anecdotal, not proof of how many users are affected.
What the soap opera effect looks like
The soap opera effect is motion that looks unnaturally smooth, especially in films and scripted TV. Roku identifies excessive Action Smoothing as a possible cause. It is different from a dim or washed-out picture, which points toward HDR mode, brightness or display configuration rather than motion smoothing.
Turn down Action Smoothing
- Play the same movie or show while you adjust settings, so you can compare the result consistently.
- Press the Star/options button on your Roku remote and open Picture settings.
- Choose Customize Picture, then Expert settings if those options appear.
- Set Action Smoothing to Off or Low for movies and TV. Roku warns that High can create odd motion or ghosting.
If the image still looks blurry during fast sports, try Action Clarity at Low or Medium only if your model offers it. If LED Motion Clarity causes flicker, turn it off. These controls are model-dependent: Roku lists Action Clarity for Select 4K, Plus and Pro series, and LED Motion Clarity for Plus and Pro models. Partner-made Roku TVs may use different names or omit the controls. See Roku’s motion-blur guidance for the model-specific steps.
If the picture changed after a Roku update
Roku says some OS updates can change motion or picture defaults and provides a way to reset picture settings. This does not identify the update described by an individual user or establish that every similar complaint has the same cause.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- On the Roku TV, go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Reset TV picture settings.
- Reapply your preferred picture settings, including Action Smoothing Off or Low if the soap opera effect returns.
- To check for available software, go to Settings > System > System update > Check now.
Use the picture-settings reset rather than starting with a full factory reset: Roku documents this narrower step for picture changes. The available support guidance does not establish that a full factory reset is needed for this complaint. Details are in Roku’s motion-blur troubleshooting article.
Match the fix to the picture problem
| What you see | What to check | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Film motion looks unnaturally smooth | Set Action Smoothing to Off or Low. | The control may be absent or named differently on some partner TVs. |
| Fast sports movement looks smeared | Try Action Clarity if your model supports it. | Processing can introduce artifacts, and availability varies by model. |
| Picture looks dim or washed out | Check HDR picture mode, brightness and the TV input’s HDR configuration. | This is distinct from motion smoothing. |
| Glow or halos appear around moving edges | Reduce Sharpness and reduce or disable motion processing. | This symptom alone does not confirm an update defect. |
| Picture settings changed after software updates | Reset TV picture settings, then adjust them again. | Roku’s support guidance does not identify the specific update mentioned in the user report. |
For a dim or washed-out HDR picture
Check HDR separately from motion settings. On supported Select 4K, Plus and Pro Roku TVs, Roku lists HDR Dark, HDR Standard and HDR Bright picture modes. For a connected Roku streaming player, verify that the TV and the selected input support HDR and that the player’s display type is configured appropriately. Roku’s instructions are at How to change the display type on your Roku streaming player. On some external 4K HDR player setups, an unsuitable HDMI cable can contribute to poor signal quality; changing a cable is not a fix for motion smoothing on the TV.

What the reported update complaint establishes
A Reddit post dated September 1, 2026 describes an owner of a 32-inch TCL Roku TV who noticed motion smoothing after software changes and said Expert Picture Settings were no longer available. A Roku support account asked for a photo or video and device information; the owner later said the issue seemed sorted for the time being. This is an individual report, not confirmation of a specific firmware cause, an official admission, or evidence of prevalence.
Roku’s support article does acknowledge that some OS updates can change picture or motion defaults and gives a reset procedure. That makes a post-update settings change plausible, but does not prove that the reported update caused the TCL owner’s experience. Roku’s motion-blur guidance and display-type instructions cover troubleshooting rather than a measured count of affected users. No statistic quantifying how many owners have this issue is established by those sources.

If the setting is missing or the reset does not help
- Note the exact TV model, Roku OS version, and the app or input where the problem occurs.
- Record whether the issue affects all content or only a particular app, show or connected device.
- For a Roku-branded TV, contact Roku support. For a partner-made Roku TV such as a TCL model, contact the television maker for model-specific settings and support.
Picture-mode features vary across models. Roku’s picture-mode guidance describes model-dependent options, and its local-dimming guidance illustrates that availability also differs by series. A missing menu does not by itself show that a setting was removed by an update.
