MS Dhoni has the larger IPL captaincy record by matches led and total wins, while Rohit Sharma and Dhoni are tied at five titles each. The Indian Express’s season-spanning table, covering Dhoni with CSK and RPS from 2008 to 2025 and Rohit with Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023, lists Dhoni at 235 matches and 136 wins, and Rohit at 158 matches and 87 wins. Those totals compare careers of different lengths, not an equal number of seasons or teams.

IPL captaincy records at a glance

The figures below are from The Indian Express’s comparison table accessed on 4 October 2026. It reports Dhoni’s record across Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS), and Rohit’s Mumbai Indians (MI) record.

Captain Reported span and team(s) Matches Wins Losses Ties No results IPL titles
MS Dhoni 2008–2025; CSK/RPS 235 136 97 0 2 5
Rohit Sharma 2013–2023; MI 158 87 67 4 0 5

What the numbers show—and what they do not

Dhoni leads on appearances and total wins

In the cited table, Dhoni has 77 more captaincy appearances and 49 more wins than Rohit. That is a clear lead in accumulated totals, but Dhoni’s listed span is longer and includes two franchises. A larger total does not, by itself, establish stronger performance per match or under equivalent circumstances.

The title count is tied

The Indian Express table lists five IPL titles for each captain. Mumbai Indians’ official season-by-season account also credits Rohit with five titles, while listing a separate set of captaincy totals through 2023. The trophy count therefore does not break the tie between them.

The totals do not make the careers directly equivalent

Rohit’s listed record is for MI from 2013 through 2023. Dhoni’s spans 2008 through 2025 and includes CSK and RPS. The comparison also covers different numbers of matches and seasons. Raw wins answer who has more wins in the selected records; they do not isolate captaincy effectiveness from tenure, team, or opportunity.

Why Rohit’s reported match totals differ

The Indian Express table reports Rohit at 158 matches, 87 wins, 67 losses and four ties. The Mumbai Indians’ official account of Rohit’s seasons, listing seasons through 2023, instead gives 150 matches, 84 wins and 66 losses. These are distinct reported snapshots and should not be combined into one record. The MI page also credits him with five titles.

For the side-by-side table above, the later, season-spanning Indian Express figures are used consistently for both captains. The disagreement is a reason to name the source and span whenever quoting Rohit’s totals, rather than presenting an undated number as universal.

Why win percentage is not used as the verdict

A percentage comparison depends on its denominator and on whether ties, no-results or other outcomes are included. The Indian Express table’s W/L% field is not straightforwardly reproducible from all the displayed outcome counts. An IPL.com captaincy page also shows conflicting presentation: its text discusses Dhoni above 226 matches, while its table omits him and lists Rohit at 156 matches and 88 wins. These differences make those pages unsuitable for a clean, like-for-like percentage verdict without reconciled records.

India Today’s 11 April 2025 report gives Dhoni 226 matches and 133 wins at that time, but it contains ordering and match-count inconsistencies and is an older snapshot than the 2008–2025 comparison used here. Its reported percentages should not be treated as a verified pair for comparing the two captains.

So, who has the better IPL captaincy record?

It depends on what “better” means. Dhoni leads in total captaincy appearances and wins in the selected later table; the reported IPL title count is level at five apiece. Because their records cover different tenures, teams and opportunities—and the available outcome rates are not cleanly comparable—the totals alone do not settle who was the better captain.

This is a captaincy comparison, not a comparison of their batting records. IPL.com’s wording, “Who has the better IPL record: MS Dhoni or Rohit Sharma?”, appears in a FAQ that compares batting statistics, so it is not evidence for a captaincy ranking.
