Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader tracks Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical choices as three separate conviction paths. Choices award points toward ranks, which grant path-specific combat benefits and can open or gate dialogue. You can mix choices, but reaching Votary on one path commits you to it as your main conviction: the other two paths cannot advance beyond Adherent, according to a walkthrough updated August 15, 2026. That makes conviction both a role-playing system and a progression decision.
What are Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical convictions?
Convictions record the principles behind your Rogue Trader’s decisions. Dogmatic choices tend toward obedience to the Imperial Creed and hostility toward perceived heresy; Iconoclast choices emphasize compassion and faith in people; Heretical choices lean toward corruption, warp power, and self-interest or Chaos. These are role-playing directions, not simple labels for every practical, kind, or ruthless action.
The game awards conviction points for specific decisions. Accumulating enough points raises a path’s rank, and ranks can provide combat effects or determine whether a particular dialogue option is available. A decision can therefore matter in more than one way: it may express a character’s outlook, add points to a path, or satisfy a rank requirement for an option. Those are related but distinct effects.
There is no established universally strongest path or guaranteed best ending. The useful comparison is what each path asks of your character, which benefits its ranks offer, and which rank-gated options matter to the kind of story you want to play. Individual choices have their own conditions and consequences; a path name alone does not establish the outcome of every decision.

Can I choose more than one conviction?
Yes. You can earn points in multiple convictions and make decisions associated with different outlooks. The important limit is rank progression: the first path you bring to Votary becomes your main conviction, and the other two are capped at Adherent, as reported by the GameFAQs walkthrough.
That means early variety does not necessarily prevent later commitment, but fully advancing multiple paths is not the same as mixing role-playing choices. If you are pursuing a specific Votary- or higher-rank dialogue option, points in that path matter; merely having chosen a few related options may not meet its rank condition. The walkthrough’s appendix identifies some choices as rank-gated, including requirements at Votary or Fanatic.
The commitment rule is especially relevant if you are intentionally saving access to different dialogue branches. Before a choice that could bring a path to Votary, consider whether that path should become your main one. The evidence available does not establish a confirmed way to reset conviction points or reverse the commitment in an unmodded game, so do not assume that a later choice can undo it.

The GameFAQs walkthrough by chris-williams, version 1.2.2 and last updated August 15, 2026, reports these thresholds. They are guide-reported gameplay figures, not a developer-published table or a newly verified save-file measurement.

These thresholds should be read alongside the point awards available in your version and playthrough. Reaching a threshold depends on which options you take, when you encounter them, and whether a choice is available to your character. The table is a guide to progression, not a promise that every playthrough presents a fixed number of points before a particular act.
How do I earn conviction points?
Points come from specific choices in the prologue, conversations, later quests, and colony projects. The guide lists this set of prologue examples, each awarding 15 points to the corresponding path:
- Dogmatic: Go through the flames.
- Iconoclast: Help surviving crew members.
- Heretical: Accept Theodora’s help.
These examples show how different actions can reward different convictions; they are not a menu of interchangeable options or evidence that every conversation awards points. The walkthrough’s appendix records individual awards and notes where some choices depend on a rank or DLC. Not every listed option will necessarily appear in every run, so check the conditions attached to the specific choice rather than assuming a point award is always available.
Why the Rykad Minoris example matters
The guide lists destroying the reactor on Rykad Minoris to wipe out all life as a 15-point Dogmatic choice. Its Iconoclast list includes saving people and/or the fusion reactor for 15 Iconoclast points. That distinction is a useful warning against assigning a conviction based only on how an action sounds: a choice that seems pragmatic is not automatically Dogmatic, and the specific listed action and its conditions matter. These examples do not amount to a complete guide to the planet’s outcomes.

How update 1.3 changed point awards
On December 10, 2024, Owlcat Games said update 1.3 increased conviction points for many Act III–IV choices and doubled the awards from affected colony projects. The patch notes stated, “All projects that gave those points also now give double the amount.” Owlcat also said that players who had already completed affected choices or projects would receive missing points the next time they made a choice carrying that conviction, rather than immediately. Advice written around launch can therefore understate how quickly later-game ranks may be reached. Read Owlcat’s update 1.3 notes.
Owlcat separately documented a June 2024 fix for a Dogmatic dialogue choice on Vheabos VI that had failed to award its points. This is a concrete example of why an older guide or a remembered point total might not match a later version exactly. Owlcat announced major update 1.6 on June 11, 2026, but that announcement alone does not establish that every conviction threshold or ability remained unchanged in every subsequent patch.
What do conviction ranks do in combat?
The walkthrough assigns combat benefits to each path’s ranks. The following effects are guide-reported descriptions, not independent balance tests; exact usefulness depends on the rest of your party and the situations in which you can use them.

The benefits reward different kinds of tactical planning. Dogmatic examples include effects tied to critical hits, momentum expenditure, and armour; Iconoclast examples support movement and Heroic Acts; Heretical examples involve consumables, psychic phenomena, or a temporary benefit with a drawback. These descriptions help explain the paths’ mechanical themes, but they do not establish that one branch is best for every build or encounter.

How do convictions affect dialogue, companions, and the story?
Conviction rank can shape which dialogue choices are available, and choices can influence the wider narrative. The walkthrough’s appendix marks some decisions as requiring Votary or Fanatic, so it is worth distinguishing a choice that awards points from one that requires a rank. A point-awarding option moves a path toward a threshold; a rank-gated option depends on having reached the stated rank.
Reaching Votary is a commitment that limits how far the other paths can progress, but it is not evidence that every off-path conversation option disappears. Nor does a conviction rank guarantee one fixed ending irrespective of other decisions. Treat the system as one influence on access and narrative direction, not as a single switch that determines the entire story.
The walkthrough says human companions also have conviction scores, but that those scores have no mechanical effect. That narrow statement does not mean companions never respond to the player’s actions; it only distinguishes their scores from a mechanical system of their own. Do not use a companion’s apparent outlook as a substitute for checking the player-character’s points or the rank requirement shown for a choice.

Is Zealot a conviction rank or a new archetype?
It is both a conviction-rank name and, in a separate announcement, the name of a combat archetype previewed for upcoming DLC. In the walkthrough’s conviction table, Zealot is the fifth rank at 500 points. Owlcat’s October 13, 2026 article previews a Zealot combat archetype for the forthcoming Processional of the Damned DLC; that preview should not be mistaken for an already released expansion of the conviction ranks. When reading a guide or announcement, use the surrounding context: points and rank thresholds refer to conviction progression, while a combat archetype refers to a character-class or build concept. The shared word does not show that the two systems have the same unlock conditions or that the DLC changes the conviction table.
How should I choose a path?
Start with the decisions and role-playing direction you want, then consider the rank commitment and combat effects. The available evidence does not identify a universally optimal route, so a sensible choice depends on your priorities rather than an assumed best ending or best build.
- Choose Dogmatic if you want your decisions to emphasize the Imperial Creed and opposition to perceived heresy, and its listed combat effects fit your tactical priorities.
- Choose Iconoclast if you want to emphasize compassion and faith in people, with listed benefits involving movement, survivability-oriented support, and Heroic Acts.
- Choose Heretical if you want a story direction involving corruption, warp power, or self-interest, and are comfortable with the particular consequences of the options you select.
- Mix choices deliberately if flexibility matters early, while keeping the Votary lock-in rule in mind if you want to progress a particular path beyond Adherent.
Before taking a consequential option, check whether the game or a reliable, version-aware guide identifies it as a point award, a rank requirement, or both. For long-term planning, the crucial distinction is not just which choice sounds closest to a label; it is whether you want that branch to become your main conviction and whether its gated options and benefits match your goals.

Does every dialogue option labeled with a conviction award points?
No. The walkthrough distinguishes listed point awards from rank-gated choices, and its appendix also flags options that may depend on DLC. Check the specific choice and its stated condition rather than treating a conviction-themed line as an automatic award.
Do companion conviction scores unlock their own benefits?
The walkthrough says human companions have conviction scores but that those scores have no mechanical effect. It does not establish that companions never react narratively to the Rogue Trader’s decisions.
Can I reset my conviction points in an unmodded game?
A confirmed unmodded method to reset points or undo the Votary commitment is not established. Do not plan around being able to reverse it after choosing a main path.
