Add obstacle avoidance if cords, toys, or pet accidents may be left on the floor. Then compare mapping and room controls, dock functions and upkeep, and whether you actually need mopping. Manufacturer feature descriptions can help you shortlist models, but they are not independent proof of cleaning performance.
Do robot vacuums work on pet hair?
They can help collect loose fur and dry debris on routine runs, but the practical question is how the brush handles hair and whether the robot suits your floors. Fur can wrap around a brush and create extra cleanup, so look for a stated hair-resistant or anti-tangle design and check what the manufacturer means by it. Keep expectations grounded: the product pages cited here describe intended features, not neutral head-to-head tests of pet-hair pickup.
Which features matter most in a pet home?
Brush design and hair wrap
Brush construction affects both pickup and the work involved in removing wrapped hair. iRobot describes dual rubber brushes on the Roomba Max 715 and j7 family; it says the Max 715 brushes are designed to handle pet hair and resist tangling. ECOVACS describes an anti-tangle main and side brush on the DEEBOT X9 PRO OMNI, and Roborock lists a dual anti-tangle system on Q7 series models. These are manufacturer claims, not comparative test results. See the Roomba Max 715 product page, Roomba j7 product page, DEEBOT X9 PRO OMNI product page, and Roborock Q7 Series page.
Rugs and carpets
If your home has rugs or carpet, check for carpet detection or an automatic suction increase, as well as whether the brush design is appropriate for those surfaces. iRobot lists Carpet Boost for the Max 715; Roborock says Q7 series models detect or let users set carpet areas and increase suction. ECOVACS describes carpet-related behavior for the X9 PRO OMNI. A stated suction figure alone does not predict pickup across different carpet types, so compare the functions and floor compatibility rather than treating one number as a universal measure.
#1 Best Overall
- INCREDIBLE SUCTION: Powerful Shark suction picks up dirt and debris on all floor types—tackling even the toughest of messes in your home.
- NO SPOTS MISSED: With Matrix Clean Navigation, the vacuum cleans in a precise matrix grid taking multiple passes over dirt and debris for whole home, deep cleaning coverage.
- IT EMPTIES ITSELF: The bagless, self-emptying base holds up to 60 days of dirt and debris while its true HEPA filtration captures and traps 99.97%* of dust and allergens (*down to .3 microns).
- PRECISION HOME MAPPING: 360° LiDAR vision quickly and accurately maps your home so your robot can methodically clean detecting and avoiding objects in its path, day or night, adapting to everyday changes in the home.
- PERFECT FOR HOMES WITH PETS: With powerful vacuum suction, Shark’s self-cleaning brushroll, and HEPA filtration system the robot captures pet hair, dust, dander and allergens with ease.
Obstacle avoidance around pet belongings and accidents
Obstacle avoidance is useful when cords, toys, bowls, or pet waste could be on the floor. iRobot says the j7 recognizes and avoids common objects including cords and pet waste, while the Max 715 page describes PrecisionVision AI navigation around objects including pet waste. ECOVACS describes 3D sensors and obstacle avoidance on the X9 PRO OMNI. These descriptions indicate intended capabilities; they do not guarantee that a robot will identify or avoid every object in every room or situation. iRobot’s j7 page states: “The Roomba® j7/j7+ Robot Vacuum uses iRobot OS Technology and PrecisionVision Navigation to recognize and avoid common objects in its way, like cords, pet waste, socks and shoes.” That is iRobot’s product claim, not an independent validation.
Navigation, maps, and room controls
Mapping and room controls can make it easier to schedule a run for specific areas or mark places to avoid. The j7 page describes mapping and controls for choosing areas to clean or avoid. ECOVACS identifies LiDAR navigation for the X9 PRO OMNI, and Roborock lists PreciSense LiDAR navigation for Q7 series models. The cited product pages do not establish that LiDAR or camera-based navigation is universally better; focus on the controls and navigation behavior you need.

Its dual rotating electric side brushes sweep and collect hidden pet hair more efficiently throughout the house, saving you the hassle.
Docks and ongoing upkeep
A self-emptying dock can reduce how often you empty a robot’s onboard bin. Multifunction docks may also handle some mopping-related tasks, but they can bring additional maintenance. Check what the dock actually automates, how much space it needs, and which bags, filters, brushes, or mop consumables it uses. Confirm compatibility for the exact model before buying replacement parts. The product pages cited here do not establish comparable maintenance intervals or lifetime costs.
Vacuum-only or vacuum-and-mop?
Mopping is optional, not a requirement for pet owners. A vacuum-only model may suit a household focused on fur and dry debris; a combo may be useful if you also want routine mopping on hard floors. iRobot’s pet-owner page distinguishes the Max 715 vacuum from the Max 775 Combo with mopping and dock-assisted maintenance. That distinction does not establish which model mops better, or that mopping is necessary for every home with pets.

What should you compare when choosing a robot vacuum for pet hair?
Use the same practical questions for each candidate rather than relying on a single headline feature:
- Hair management: What kind of main brush does it use, and does the manufacturer describe it as anti-tangle or hair-resistant?
- Floor fit: Does it detect carpet or boost suction, and is it appropriate for the rugs, carpet, and hard floors in your home?
- Obstacle handling: Does it claim to recognize or avoid likely obstacles such as cords, toys, or pet waste?
- Control: Can you map rooms, select areas to clean, or mark places to avoid?
- Dock and upkeep: What does the dock empty or maintain, what space does it take, and what model-compatible consumables will you need?
- Mopping: Would a combo’s hard-floor mopping function be useful, or would a vacuum-only model cover your needs?
Current manufacturer examples show different ways to meet these needs: iRobot’s Roomba Max 715 lists dual rubber brushes, anti-tangle design, Carpet Boost, object avoidance, and an AutoEmpty dock; the j7 page describes dual multi-surface rubber brushes and object recognition and avoidance; ECOVACS describes LiDAR navigation, obstacle avoidance, anti-tangle brushes, and an OMNI station for the X9 PRO OMNI; Roborock lists LiDAR navigation, an anti-tangle system, carpet detection or boost, and self-emptying options for the Q7 series. These examples can help structure a shortlist, but the pages do not establish an overall best model. Confirm the current configuration and availability for your market before buying.
