In an October 2020 Scottish Championship livestream, an automated Pixellot camera repeatedly tracked assistant referee John McCrossan’s bald head instead of the football. The error pulled the camera away from play during Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s 1–1 match against Ayr United, disrupting the stream for nearly 2,000 supporters.
What happened during the match?
Inverness Caledonian Thistle was using an automated camera system to produce and livestream its match against Ayr United. The system was intended to follow the ball, but it repeatedly lost the action and panned to McCrossan as he moved along the touchline. Viewers therefore missed portions of the game. The match ended 1–1.
The club had shifted to automatic production and ball tracking for its livestreams. Europa Press reported that Stream AMG was the streaming partner and that the club had completed two successful tests in the 14 days before the match. Those earlier tests did not prevent the failure during the live broadcast.
Why did it follow the referee’s head?
The camera’s automated tracking mistook McCrossan’s bald head for the ball. The documented failure was one of object identity and tracking robustness: the system followed something that looked enough like its target to draw the camera away from play. The available accounts do not describe the camera’s internal algorithm or establish exactly which visual features caused the mistake, so a more specific technical explanation would be speculation.

Which camera company was involved?
The camera system was made by Pixellot. STV reported Pixellot’s response: “We are aware of the issue with linesman and we are already working on improving this for the next game.” The club’s chief executive, Scot Gardiner, called the problem an early teething issue and said the league was aware and working on it. He also joked that he would ask visiting managers to wear bonnets “to take away one element of surprise for our state of the art artificial intelligence system.”
What does the incident show about automated sports cameras?
Automated ball tracking can keep a camera moving without a person manually operating every shot, but a mistaken target can make the stream less useful than a fixed view. This incident shows one failure mode, not how Pixellot compares with other camera systems or how reliably the technology performs in general. A meaningful comparison would need evidence about ball-tracking accuracy, lookalike objects and occlusion, human override, latency, and performance under different lighting and camera angles.
