For the most restrictive starting setup, link and verify a parent account, turn off chat features your child does not need, set content maturity to Minimal for a younger child, and restrict visibility, private servers, spending, and screen time. Then review specific games and requests instead of assuming one setting covers every risk. These choices reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that a child will never encounter upsetting content or unwanted contact.
Roblox’s account types, controls, and age-based permissions vary by age and region. The steps below reflect Roblox Support documentation verified October 29, 2026, and explain where a setting has limits or may not be available on every account.
What should I set up first on my child’s Roblox account?
Start by linking your own Roblox account to your child’s account. That gives you the parent-facing controls and insights Roblox documents for linked accounts, including settings that may not be available through Parent mode on the child’s device alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Sign in to your child’s account. Open Settings > Parental Controls > Add parent.
- Link your own Roblox account. Follow the on-screen instructions and verify that you are an adult during setup.
- Open the child’s controls from your account. Go to Settings > Parental controls and select the child’s account. Roblox calls controls in this area “Settings you manage.”
- Confirm the child’s recorded age. Age and region affect which account type, content, and communication choices are available. Recheck permissions after any age check or age transition.
Roblox also describes Parent mode on a child’s device without a separately linked parent account. Its rollout is gradual, so it may not appear for every family. Roblox says Parent mode does not provide settings that require real-time alerts, including spending notifications; use a linked parent account if you need those documented features.

For a conservative baseline, begin with the controls below, then loosen only what your family has decided the child needs. A less restrictive choice is not automatically wrong for every child, but it should be deliberate rather than the result of leaving defaults unchecked.
How do I turn off chat on my child’s Roblox account?
In the parent-facing controls, open Settings you manage > Communication. Turn Experience chat and Direct chat off if your child does not need them; set Friends chat to No one, and turn off chat-and-party-with-friends if your family does not want that contact path.
Review the communication options separately. Roblox lists Studio collaboration and Gameplay coordination/Quick Words as distinct settings, so do not assume switching off one chat option disables every way users can coordinate. If a feature is unavailable, or its control is not shown, check the child’s actual Communication screen rather than relying on a general age rule.

Roblox Support’s documentation has a discrepancy about Direct chat consent: its dedicated chat page says users under 16 need parental consent, while its parental-controls overview says under 13. Because the published pages do not agree, do not assume a particular consent prompt will appear for a child of a particular age. Check the account’s Communication settings and any pending parent requests.
An age check can make some communication features eligible; it does not mean a parent has to enable them. Roblox says its chat switches for Experience chat and Direct chat do not control chat features added by a game’s creator. If an experience has its own communication feature, the platform-level switches may not be enough to control it. This is one reason to review the experience itself and to consider whether your child needs communication turned on at all.
Can strangers message my child on Roblox?
Turning off unneeded chat and limiting who can communicate are the strongest first steps, but the answer depends on which communication mode is enabled, the account’s age and region, and any creator-added features. Roblox describes filtered chat and blocking and reporting tools, but filtering is not a guarantee that a child will be protected from every unwanted message or interaction.

Review friend and trusted-friend requests with your child. Roblox says trusted friends can enable cross-age or unfiltered communication in some circumstances, depending on age and region; children under 13 need parent permission to add a trusted friend. A familiar username or a child’s claim that they know someone online is not independent identification. Ask who the person is and how the child knows them before approving a request.

What should I set Roblox content maturity to?
Choose the lowest maturity level that fits your child, and consider Minimal as the initial setting for a younger child. It is Roblox’s most restrictive listed content-maturity category, not a guarantee of zero violence, fear, or other material a child might find upsetting.
In Settings you manage > Content restrictions, review these controls as separate layers:
- Content maturity: Sets the general maturity level of experiences the child can access. Start at Minimal for a younger child and adjust only after considering the child’s age and readiness.
- Blocked games: Lets you block particular experiences. If the child is already playing one when you block it, Roblox says the block takes effect the next time they enter it.
- Allowed games: Lets you make an individual exception for a game that would otherwise be unavailable under the broader controls. Review the specific experience before approving it.
- Sensitive issues: Review this separate content-restriction control rather than assuming the maturity setting covers every subject you want to limit.
- Preview games: Set this to No one if that choice is offered and your child does not need invitations to early-access content.
The overall catalog is not simply a whitelist created by one slider. Roblox describes Roblox Kids, generally for ages 5–8, and Roblox Select, generally for ages 9–15, with age ranges and availability varying by region. Kids defaults to Minimal/Mild-eligible content and chat off; Select adds Moderate-rated eligible content. Without an age check, Roblox says the younger-user catalogs retain chat off. Age checks can make games outside those catalogs and chat eligible, but actual access still depends on account settings and region.
When your child asks for an unavailable experience, assess that title individually rather than raising the maturity setting for the whole account by default. Consider whether the child can play it without communication, whether the content suits them, and whether a specific allowed-game exception is preferable to broader access. Revisit the blocked and allowed lists as interests change.

How can I hide my child’s online status and current game?
In Settings you manage > Visibility & private servers, choose No one for online status and for who can see the child’s current game where those options are available. Choose No one for private-server participation and inventory visibility if you want the most restrictive documented options.
These choices reduce what other users can discover about the account; they do not make every interaction private or control what happens inside a game. In particular, a private server controls who may join it, but the word “private” does not establish that every person or interaction inside is safe. Treat invitations to private servers like other requests to join an online space: consider who will be there, and whether your child should be allowed to participate.
How do I limit Roblox spending and Robux transfers?
Set a monthly spending limit instead of leaving the account at No limit. If you use a linked parent account, opt into All transactions notifications so you can see spending activity, and select Always ask for Robux transfers if transfers are available on the account.
Roblox’s spending safeguards have important boundaries. Roblox Support states: “Monthly spending limits do not impact gift card redemptions and may not apply on certain console devices.” In practical terms, a monthly limit is not a universal cap on every way value can reach the account. For console purchases, use the console’s own family purchase controls as well.
Roblox documents default Robux transfer limits of 500 daily and 1,000 monthly. These are transfer limits, not a recommended allowance or a substitute for reviewing requests and transactions. If a transfer control is available, requiring approval gives a parent a chance to assess a transfer before it happens.
A physical Roblox gift card can be an optional way to give a fixed-value allowance, but it is not a privacy or chat safeguard. Keep the gift-card caveat in mind: Roblox says gift-card redemption is not affected by its monthly spending limit. A card therefore does not turn off purchases or enforce that limit.

How do I set a Roblox screen-time limit?
Use Settings you manage > Screen time to set a daily limit. Roblox offers limit choices in 15-minute increments. Also review the seven-day activity chart and the top-games list, which shows up to 20 games from the past week according to Roblox Support documentation.
The limit and activity views answer different questions: a daily cap sets a boundary, while the chart and game list help you see how play is distributed. Use the activity information to have a specific conversation about a game or routine, rather than treating a screen-time number as a complete measure of online safety.
Age affects who controls this setting. Roblox says that at 13, the child directly manages their screen-time limit. A parent can therefore use the setting as part of a younger child’s account plan, but should not expect to retain the same authority indefinitely.
What changes as my child gets older?
Roblox’s parent controls change in stages, so a linked account is not a promise that a parent can lock every setting until the child turns 18.
- Age-check eligibility: Roblox lists facial age estimation and, for eligible users 13 or older, ID verification. An age check can affect eligibility for chat and games outside the younger-user catalogs. Reassess permissions afterward.
- At 13: Roblox says the child directly manages their screen-time limit and blocking, and parent-set spending limits stop applying. Linked parents retain specified insights and some controls for younger teens, but not all controls remain parent-managed.
- At 16: Roblox says the parent-facing “Settings you manage” list contracts further. Do not assume controls available for a younger child remain available.
- At 18: Roblox says the account automatically unlinks from the parent account.
Check the settings that are actually available as the child reaches each age milestone. The correct plan is to revisit account permissions, communication, and spending safeguards as they change—not to rely on an old under-13 checklist as a permanent description of Roblox controls.
What is the safest practical setup?
For a younger child, a cautious starting configuration is: a linked, age-verified parent account; unnecessary chat and party features off; Minimal content maturity; specific review of game requests and exceptions; Preview games set to No one if offered; online status, current-game visibility, and private-server access set to No one where available; friends and trusted-friend requests reviewed; and a monthly spending limit, transaction notifications, transfer approval, and daily screen-time limit where eligible.

Then check whether the child’s age, region, device, or an age check changes what the account can access. No setting can substitute for discussing how to handle unwanted contact, and no Roblox control is a guarantee against harmful content. The safest configuration is the most restrictive one that still fits the child’s needs, reviewed when those needs or the account’s eligibility change.
Source basis: Roblox Support documentation for parental setup, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, content restrictions, communication, visibility, spending, screen time, age transitions, friends, transfers, and Parent mode, verified October 29, 2026. Roblox does not publish an effectiveness percentage establishing that a particular settings combination prevents harm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox’s Minimal setting mean there is no violence?
No. Minimal is the most restrictive listed content-maturity category, but Roblox does not describe it as a guarantee of zero violence, fear, or other upsetting material. A parent can still review and block individual experiences.
Recommended Free Tools
Will Roblox tell me every time my child spends Robux?
A linked parent account can opt into All transactions notifications, but Parent mode without a linked account does not provide settings that require real-time alerts. Roblox’s documentation also warns that the monthly limit may not apply on certain consoles.
Can my child still play a game after I block it?
A block prevents future entry under the account’s restrictions, but if the child is already playing that experience when you block it, Roblox says the block takes effect the next time they enter it. Check the blocked-games control if access continues after that.
Does an age check automatically turn chat on?
No. An age check can make some communication features eligible, but access still depends on account settings and region. Review the Communication screen and any parent-consent requests before changing permissions.
