Neither Robinhood Crypto nor Coinbase is automatically cheaper. Your total cost depends on how you trade: Robinhood’s exchange-routed orders may carry a tiered maker/taker fee, while standard orders use market-maker routing with economics reflected in the spread. Coinbase Simple Trade may include a spread; Coinbase Advanced uses order-book maker/taker pricing. Both platforms provide custodial accounts, not user-controlled private keys. This comparison covers official materials for US retail readers checked October 7, 2026; fees, features, and asset access can vary by account and location.
How to compare the fees fairly
Do not compare a posted fee percentage with a different platform’s “zero fee” headline and assume the lower figure means a cheaper trade. The displayed execution price, spread, order type, routing, fee tier, and any conversion or withdrawal cost can all affect what you pay.
- Choose the same asset, order size, and order type on both platforms.
- Open each platform’s order preview at about the same time. Record the estimated execution price and any displayed fee.
- Check whether the order is routed through a market maker or an exchange, or placed on an order book; note whether it is treated as maker or taker.
- Include any conversion cost, network fee for an on-chain withdrawal, and subscription condition relevant to the transaction.
- Repeat the comparison for the assets and features available to your account, and record your region and the date. Prices and fee tiers can change.
Robinhood Crypto fees: routing and order type matter
Exchange-routed orders
Robinhood lists fee tiers of 0.00% to 0.95% for eligible exchange-routed crypto orders, based on trailing 30-day volume. This is not a universal rate for every Robinhood crypto transaction. Robinhood says maker/taker pricing is rolling out gradually, so the applicable fee structure can differ by interface, asset, order, and routing. Eligible exchange-routed orders count toward the stated volume tiers; standard app orders with market-maker routing, web classic orders, and certain other orders do not. Market and stop orders are taker orders. A limit or stop-limit order can receive maker treatment if it rests on the book, but is treated as taker if it matches immediately. The order label alone does not guarantee maker pricing; what happens when it reaches the book matters.

Market-maker routing
Robinhood says market-maker routing is the default for standard app and web classic orders. For every $100 notional executed through that routing, Robinhood Crypto received $0.95 from its market maker as of June 15, 2026. Robinhood says the rebate is included in the spread and does not name its partner market makers. Exchange routing is available only for supported crypto and eligible interfaces; Robinhood says it receives no rebate from partner exchanges. For a specific trade, compare the previewed execution price and fee rather than treating “commission-free” or a listed tier as the all-in cost. Routing and displayed spread can matter even when there is no separate fee line.

Coinbase fees: Simple Trade and Advanced are different
Simple Trade
Coinbase Simple Trade may include a spread in the quoted price, including for crypto-to-crypto conversions. A spread affects the exchange rate you receive even if it is not presented like a separate trading commission. Coinbase One advertises zero trading fees for eligible buys and sells, subject to limitations; spreads can still apply to certain Coinbase trades, and excluded transaction types such as DEX service transactions may involve other fees. Coinbase Advanced
Advanced uses an order book and maker/taker fees rather than the Simple Trade flow’s spread-inclusive quote. Coinbase says Advanced does not include a spread because users interact directly with the order book. Market orders and orders matched immediately pay taker fees; resting orders can receive maker treatment. If an order is partly matched immediately and the rest rests on the book, the filled portion is charged as taker and the resting remainder as maker.

Coinbase’s current criteria and fees are shown in a signed-in account and can change, so use the live fee page and order preview for your actual rate. Its September 16, 2026 announcement gave entry-level spot maker/taker examples of 0.50%/0.90% in the US, 0.25%/0.50% in the EU and UK, and 0.09%/0.10% in Brazil, India, and other international markets. Those are dated regional examples, not a rate guaranteed to every account or market. The announcement said lower tiers begin at $10,000 in qualifying volume, with other criteria including USDC balance. Features and access: match the platform to the task

This is a comparison of named features, not a complete feature list for every account or jurisdiction. If you mainly want a straightforward purchase, compare the relevant buy previews. If you actively place orders, examine order-book controls, order types, and your actual fee tier. If you plan to move crypto on-chain, verify that the asset and network support the exact transfer you need before trading.

Custody: neither account gives you the platform’s private keys
Robinhood Crypto
Robinhood says crypto is held in a Robinhood Crypto account, separate from its Robinhood Financial brokerage account. Its disclosures say customer crypto is a mix of hot and cold storage, with most held offline. Robinhood also states that crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Coinbase
Coinbase’s user agreement describes transaction private keys stored using a combination of online and offline storage. Coinbase Advanced says customer assets are held 1:1 and that Coinbase does not lend or act with those assets without permission. These are Coinbase’s statements about its practices; they should not be read as an independent guarantee, FDIC deposit insurance, or SIPC protection. Transfers and self-custody
A custodial exchange account and a self-custody wallet are different: in a custodial account, the platform controls the private keys used to manage assets; in self-custody, you control the keys. Robinhood says customers can send supported crypto to an external self-custody wallet. It says it charges no additional fee to send or receive crypto, but network fees apply. Asset and network support, account restrictions, and transfer eligibility can affect what you can move. Which platform fits your use?
- Compare Robinhood if you want its trading interface or integrations and are willing to check whether your asset, interface, and order qualify for exchange routing and a particular fee tier.
- Compare Coinbase if you want a choice between Simple Trade and an order-book workflow, or need Advanced tools and markets that are available in your region.
- Prioritize self-custody if direct control of private keys is a requirement. Neither platform’s standard custodial account provides that control; confirm withdrawal support and network details before choosing where to buy.
For either service, decide using the specific asset, account, region, transaction, and custody arrangement you will use—not a headline fee or a platform-wide label.
