The right choice depends less on the brand than on how you buy, what the full transaction costs, whether you plan to withdraw BTC, and who controls the keys while you hold it.
This is a US-oriented comparison based on provider disclosures retrieved October 7, 2026. Availability and terms can vary by location and account. Check the live order preview and Bitcoin withdrawal screen before committing.
Start with the custody decision
On a custodial exchange, the provider controls the private keys while your Bitcoin remains in your account. You can have a balance and, where supported, withdraw coins, but you do not hold the keys yourself. With self-custody, you control the keys and must protect the backup and recovery information.
Robinhood Crypto is custodial: Robinhood says it manages customers’ keys and does not provide customers with the private keys to its corporate crypto addresses. Eligible customers can transfer supported crypto to external addresses; limits depend on account-specific factors, and Robinhood displays an estimated network fee before confirmation. Robinhood lists supported Bitcoin address formats but says it does not support Lightning transactions or Taproot addresses. Robinhood Crypto transfer details.

Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody product. Robinhood says users hold the keys and are responsible for backing them up; Robinhood Crypto support cannot recover a lost secret recovery phrase. When exchange custody may suit you
- You want to buy and hold BTC in an account without managing a recovery phrase.
- You value the provider’s account and support processes, while understanding they do not give you control of the keys.
- You do not need to move Bitcoin to an external wallet immediately.
When self-custody may suit you
- You want control of the keys and accept responsibility for secure backup and recovery.
- You are prepared to verify addresses and understand that an on-chain transfer cannot generally be reversed.
- You have a recovery plan that does not depend on the wallet provider recovering a lost phrase.

Robinhood Crypto fees
Robinhood’s official fee-tier help page, retrieved in 2026, lists exchange-routing fee tiers from 0.00% to 0.95%. The applicable tier depends on eligible trailing 30-day crypto volume. Maker/taker availability is rolling out gradually, market orders are taker orders, and routing can change costs; the range is not a promise of the price any particular customer will pay.

Coinbase fees
Coinbase distinguishes its simple Trade flow from Advanced. Simple Trade pricing includes a spread; Advanced uses an order book without an included spread, but trading fees may still apply. Coinbase says the amount charged can vary, so compare the final preview for the order size and payment method you intend to use rather than treating one quoted fee as universal.
Kraken fees
Kraken’s fee schedule retrieved in 2026 lists 1% for instant and recurring trades and 1.5% for custom orders, subject to Kraken+ conditions and the product’s scope. Those figures do not describe Kraken Pro spot trading. Kraken also separates purchase/trading charges from crypto withdrawal and funding-provider fees, so check the fee for the exact service and location before comparing.
Calculate the cost of buying and withdrawing Bitcoin
A headline trading fee is not necessarily the total cost of acquiring BTC. Depending on the product and payment method, the order price can reflect a spread as well as a separate trading fee. The size and timing of your order can also affect what price appears. If you plan to withdraw, include that step in the comparison.

- Purchase flow: compare the amount of Bitcoin shown for the same dollar amount and payment method, and include any stated spread or trading fee.
- Withdrawal: check whether a provider charges or estimates a network fee, whether there is a minimum, and how much BTC will arrive at your destination.
- Frequency: if you expect to withdraw often, repeated network costs can matter more than they would for someone who leaves BTC in an exchange account.
- Actual preview: review the order and transfer screens for your account, since provider terms and displayed prices can change.
Coinbase says its external-transfer preview discloses fees and estimates a network fee; Robinhood says its estimated network fee appears before sending. Neither disclosure makes a single withdrawal charge universal. Coinbase also states that purchase and withdrawal prices vary. Coinbase pricing and fees and Coinbase withdrawal minimums and fees.
Move Bitcoin only after checking the destination
Bitcoin transfers on-chain are final. Robinhood warns that a wrong address or incompatible network can cause permanent loss, and states: “Crypto transfers are final. Once sent, they can’t be canceled or reversed, even by Robinhood.” Check the address and network carefully before confirming. Robinhood’s transfer guidance.

- Confirm the destination wallet supports Bitcoin on the network and address format you intend to use.
- Copy the receiving address from the destination wallet, then compare it carefully with the address entered in the sending app.
- Review the amount, provider limits, estimated network fee, and final confirmation details.
- Send only after the preview matches your intended destination and amount.
Robinhood says transfer limits depend on account-specific factors. Its support page also lists Bitcoin address formats it supports and excludes Lightning transactions and Taproot addresses, so confirm compatibility rather than assuming every wallet address will work.

Choose a wallet based on how you will recover access
If you keep BTC in an exchange account, the provider controls the keys and your access depends on the account and service. If you move to self-custody, you take control of the keys but also take on backup and recovery responsibilities. A lost secret recovery phrase may mean the provider cannot restore access.
A hardware wallet is optional equipment for self-custody, not a requirement for buying Bitcoin or holding it on an exchange. Ledger says a Ledger device is required to take self-custody through its app; that is a requirement for its own app-based path, not a universal condition for self-custody. Robinhood says crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected, and that Robinhood Crypto is not a FINRA or SIPC member. A practical way to decide
- Decide who should control the keys. If you want an exchange to hold BTC, compare custodial accounts. If you want self-custody, plan how you will secure and recover the keys before transferring.
- Select the purchase flow. Compare simple or instant buying with an order-book interface, accounting for how each provider presents spread and trading fees.
- Price the full scenario. Use the same intended order amount and payment method, then include the expected withdrawal and any minimum or provider fee.
- Confirm account fit. Check jurisdiction, verification, limits, and product eligibility on the provider’s current pages and screens.
- Review transfer compatibility. If withdrawing, verify the network and address format and inspect the final preview before sending.
The provider disclosures do not establish a consistent fee basket for an apples-to-apples ranking, so there is no supported universal cheapest or best choice. The useful comparison is the live cost and custody arrangement for your own purchase and holding plan.
