Choose Roadhog if you want to threaten one enemy with Chain Hook and sustain yourself with Take a Breather. Choose Mauga if you prefer sustained chaingun pressure, an unstoppable charge, and Cage Fight. Neither is the universally better Tank: the right pick depends on your team, opponents, map, mode, and the current balance patch.
How Roadhog and Mauga threaten opponents
Roadhog: pull a target into close range
Roadhog’s Scrap Gun has a short-range spread attack and a medium-range secondary projectile that bursts into the primary fire. His defining threat is Chain Hook, which drags a targeted enemy toward him and creates an opportunity to fight at close range. Take a Breather heals him and reduces damage taken, while Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of him. Blizzard’s Roadhog hero page lists these abilities.
Mauga: pressure forward and contain a fight
Mauga’s kit centers on his Incendiary and Volatile Chainguns, with Overrun for a forward charge and stomp. Blizzard describes him as unstoppable while charging, and the stomp launches enemies. Cardiac Overdrive and Berserker round out his kit; Blizzard describes Berserker as granting temporary health when he deals critical damage. His ultimate, Cage Fight, deploys a barrier that traps Mauga and enemies inside. See Blizzard’s Mauga hero page for the listed abilities.
What changed in the 2026 balance updates
Mauga’s Overrun cooldown is longer in 5v5
Blizzard’s September 2026 patch notes increased Mauga’s Overrun cooldown from 5 to 6 seconds in 5v5. Blizzard’s developer comment explains: “Increasing Overrun’s cooldown lengthens the window where Mauga must commit to a fight before he can disengage, reducing his mobility without directly impacting his ability to engage.” In practical terms, Overrun remains an engagement tool, but Mauga has to wait longer to use it again to reposition or leave. Older descriptions of both heroes may be out of date
Blizzard’s June 2026 notes document substantial kit changes. Roadhog’s Chain Hook gained the ability to hit teammates and pull Roadhog to a teammate, and Take a Breather began generating nearby poison gas that deals damage. Mauga’s Cardiac Overdrive lost its former ally damage-reduction and lifesteal effects and was changed in duration, movement, and healing-resource mechanics; the notes also say Overrun stomp damage scales with height. These are dated changes, not a promise that every detail remains unchanged in later patches. Check the dated official patch notes for the full changes.
Blizzard’s July 2026 notes changed Mauga’s chaingun spread behavior and included a July 28 bug-fix update. Because spread details can change, use the live in-game description or latest official notes rather than relying on a number from an older guide. Blizzard’s patch notes are the reference for those updates.

These are different tools, not evidence that one hero is stronger in every matchup. Map layout, the opposing heroes, team composition, game mode, and later balance changes can all affect which kit is more useful.

The official hero pages and patch notes cited here do not establish a comparative pick rate, win rate, or overall performance ranking for Roadhog and Mauga. Patch changes show what Blizzard adjusted, not which hero performs better across matches. Choose based on the playstyle and situation you want; don’t treat the cooldown change or an individual ability as proof of a universal ranking.
