American Airlines offers checked-bag tracking and accepts AirTag or Find My location links in delayed-bag reports, but the public sources reviewed here do not establish whether American uses RFID for checked bags across its network. RFID is one way airlines can record baggage movements; it is not the only way, and it does not by itself guarantee a bag makes a connection.

What “RFID and American” actually tells you

There are two separate questions behind a missed baggage connection: how the airline tracks the bag, and how the bag is transferred between flights. RFID—radio-frequency identification—uses a radio-readable tag and readers to identify tagged items. In baggage operations, it can automatically record reads as bags pass tracking points.

American publicly documents a passenger bag tracker and a delayed-bag reporting process. It has also described RFID-tagged property bins used in automated security screening lanes at Chicago O’Hare. Those bins carry passengers’ belongings through screening; the announcement is not evidence that checked bags carry RFID tags in American’s baggage system.

The public sources reviewed here do not establish whether American uses RFID for checked bags across its network, when any network-wide rollout might have occurred, or an American-specific RFID tracking success rate. That is different from saying American does not use RFID.

RFID is not the same as baggage tracking

IATA Resolution 753 defines four baggage custody events airlines must track: passenger handover, loading onto the aircraft, delivery to the transfer area, and return to the passenger. It also calls for sharing tracking data with interline partners as applicable. These are operational events, not a requirement to use one particular radio technology.

  • Barcode scanning: optical readers scan the printed baggage label.
  • RFID: radio readers identify a conformant tag without requiring the same optical scan process.
  • Other arrangements: airlines can use other technologies as needed to produce the relevant event records.

IATA’s 2019 RFID resolution recommends conformant RFID inlays in airline baggage labels and airport RFID infrastructure, while recognizing other methods. IATA also lists RP 1740c as its RFID specifications recommendation for interline baggage. Neither document makes RFID the sole means of meeting Resolution 753 tracking requirements.

Among surveyed airports, 27% reported RFID tracking and 73% optical barcode scanning. These are survey results for that population in 2024, not a current census of every airport or airline. IATA’s 2024 survey and statement explains the findings.

What to do if your American Airlines bag misses a connection

  1. Check American’s bag tracker. Use American’s Track your bags page for available status updates. The airline cautions that tracking may not be available at every airport.
  2. For another airline’s flight, contact that carrier for updates. American specifically directs customers to check with the other airline when an itinerary includes another carrier.
  3. File or manage a delayed-bag report. Follow the instructions on American’s delayed or damaged bags page.
  4. Share a personal tracker link if you have one. American’s report workflow lets you provide an AirTag or Find My network accessory location link. Treat this as an additional clue for the recovery process, not as a replacement for the airline’s baggage identification tag or a guarantee of recovery.

What happens to checked bags on a connection?

Through-checking depends on the itinerary and carrier arrangements. American’s FAQ says tickets generally need to be in the same reservation and the onward flight must be operated by American or a oneworld carrier; conditions and exceptions can apply. Check American’s current baggage and through-check FAQ for the rules that apply to your trip.

Eligible Heathrow–DFW One Stop Security travelers

American announced in 2025 that eligible travelers arriving from London Heathrow at Dallas Fort Worth can clear U.S. Customs at the arrival gate and continue to a connection without reclaiming and rechecking their bags. American says checked bags are automatically transferred under this specific process. It is not a general promise for every international connection. American’s One Stop Security announcement describes the route and eligibility context.

Sydney–LAX remote baggage screening pilot

In a 2025 pilot on Sydney Kingsford Smith–Los Angeles, eligible arriving passengers can proceed through passport control and onward rather than claim and recheck checked luggage. Screening requirements remain in place. This pilot is specific to the route and eligible passengers, not a standard process for all American international arrivals. American’s pilot announcement outlines the arrangement.

How to compare airline bag-tracking claims

A statement that an airline “tracks bags” can describe several different layers. To compare systems fairly, ask:

  • Which of the four custody points generate recorded events?
  • Does a barcode, RFID reader, or another method identify the bag?
  • Are airports, ground handlers, and interline partners sharing those events?
  • Can passengers see the resulting status information?
  • Can a traveler submit a personal tracker location during recovery?

Delta provides a useful contrast, not a proxy for American. Delta says it adds RFID tags to checked luggage and uses RFID scanners along the journey. Delta reports a 99.9% tracking success rate for bags tracked with RFID on its real-time bag tracking page. That is Delta’s own figure, not an American result or an independently verified industry average.

How common is mishandling, and what do the figures mean?

Different years and sources produce different rates, so the figures should not be blended. IATA’s current baggage-tracking page displays its estimate of 6.3 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers and 33.4 million mishandled bags in 2024. Separately, an IATA release published in 2024 cited SITA’s figure of 7.6 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers globally in 2022 and said most were returned within 48 hours. These are industry-wide figures, not American-specific measures or evidence about a particular bag’s location. See IATA’s baggage tracking information and the 2024 IATA release.

As IATA Director of Ground Operations Monika Mejstrikova put it in the May 9, 2024 release: “Tracking bags at acceptance, loading, transfer and delivery will give the industry the data it needs to improve.” The point is the custody record: RFID can help create it, but a reader still needs coverage, event data must be handled and shared, and transfer operations must move the bag to the right flight.
