Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists can feel more volatile than Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, but that is a difference in where uncertainty sits—not a measured difference in randomness. Thousand Hells builds short mythic missions from randomized story pieces and dice checks tied to a four-person party’s traits. Six Ages also varies between playthroughs, but frames uncertainty through simulation-driven clan events and decisions whose consequences accumulate over a longer story.

What “more random” means in this comparison

There is no published head-to-head test or shared statistic showing that one game is objectively more random. The comparison is about design and play feel: how variation reaches the player, how readable the odds seem, and how much preparation can shape the result.

Both games change from one playthrough to another. A Sharp describes Thousand Hells as a tactical narrative game with procedural generation, while its Steam listing describes Six Ages scenes as shaped by deep simulation systems. The distinction is not random versus non-random; it is randomized narrative assembly and uncertain checks in one game versus simulation-driven clan events and long-term choices in the other.

How uncertainty works in Thousand Hells

Randomized encounters and party traits

Thousand Hells sends a party of four heroes through mythic heists and dynamic narrative encounters. A Sharp and Kitfox Games say the 2026 Steam listing includes more than 280 unique encounters, multiple paths through encounters, and changing helpers. That encounter count is the publisher’s figure; it is not directly comparable to the scene count for Six Ages.

Encounters use party traits in turn-based, dice-resolved trials. PC Gamer’s September 2026 review reports that a better match between a trait and a challenge improves the roll. That gives players a basis for making choices, but it does not guarantee success: the available traits and the way a challenge is described can make the odds difficult to read.

Risk can carry forward

The official listing presents choices as potentially life-or-death and notes that characters can be injured. PC Gamer’s reviewer found that randomized trials could make losses feel brutal, including situations where the available traits seemed to leave a run doomed. That is the reviewer’s reported experience, not a claim that every run ends that way.

The intended appeal is a compact, replayable story whose pieces can combine differently each time. Designer David Dunham told PC Gamer, “We sometimes call it a kaleidoscopic game, because lots of pieces come together and they’re randomized.” He also described it as a story generator where “You’re not going to know what you’re going to get each time.”

How Six Ages handles variation

Simulation shapes a clan’s story

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is a storybook strategy game about leading a clan. Its Steam listing describes resource management, long-term decisions, and more than 400 interactive story scenes whose appearance and outcomes are driven by deep simulation systems. That figure comes from the publisher’s listing and counts scenes, not the same kind of content as Thousand Hells encounters.

A Sharp’s announcement also says procedural generation makes each playthrough different. The game’s uncertainty therefore is not absent; it is embedded in a broader clan simulation and the consequences of decisions over time. A Sharp characterized the game as “a tactical narrative game in a new setting,” distinguishing it from the earlier narrative-strategy framing of Six Ages.

What preparation can—and cannot—control

In Thousand Hells, choosing a party with relevant skills can improve the chances of passing a trial, according to PC Gamer’s review. Preparation matters, but it is not the same as control: randomized story sequencing, which traits are available, and unclear odds can make a sensible choice feel ineffective.

Kitfox’s September 2026 community update acknowledged feedback that players wanted more information about character actions and dice rolls, saying, “We absolutely hear where you’re coming from and understand that a little more information in-game would alleviate a lot of frustration.” The update also said the developers wanted to preserve the game’s intended risk and uncertainty. This describes the discussion at that time; it does not establish whether later updates changed the interface or difficulty.

In Six Ages, players make clan decisions with longer-range effects, but the official description likewise presents outcomes as simulation-driven rather than fully predictable. The practical contrast is between trying to improve the odds of an immediate party trial and guiding a clan through interconnected events whose effects unfold over a longer arc.

Which game is a better fit?

If you want… Better fit Why
Short mythic runs with changing narrative combinations Thousand Hells The publisher lists a typical run at about one hour, and the designer describes its narrative as randomized story assembly. The run length is a listed typical duration, not a measured average.
A longer clan story shaped by decisions and simulation Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind The publisher frames it as a multi-generational clan tale with resource management and long-term choices.
More legible control over immediate challenge odds Neither can be guaranteed from the available descriptions Thousand Hells uses trait-to-challenge matching, but PC Gamer reported frustration with outcomes and Kitfox acknowledged requests for clearer information. The available descriptions do not establish a directly comparable odds-clarity measure for Six Ages.

For scale, A Sharp and Kitfox’s 2026 listing says Thousand Hells was built with eight writers and hundreds of hand-painted illustrations. Those details help describe its authored presentation, but they do not measure how random the game is. The same listing gives a typical run as about an hour, while Dunham told PC Gamer he aimed for a complete story of roughly one or two hours.
