Reverse-engineered game projects are not all the same kind of port. A decompilation reconstructs human-readable source code; a static recompilation translates original binary code into C or C++ and compiles it to run natively on another platform. Source ports, behavioral reconstructions and remakes are related, but distinct. Recent examples range from a reported browser-playable Halo: Combat Evolved build to a VR conversion that requires the original 2003 PC game. Their availability, compatibility and completeness vary by project and can change quickly.
What do “decomp,” “recomp” and “port” mean?
The labels describe different methods and results, not interchangeable stages of one process. The Unricopie catalog separates static recompilations, reverse-engineered source code, ports and remakes; Decomp Games also distinguishes decompilations from source ports and recreations.
- Decompilation: reconstructs human-readable source from a compiled game. A decomp project may be incomplete or may not itself produce a playable version.
- Static recompilation: translates the original binary code into C or C++ and compiles it natively for another platform. It is not simply the same thing as publishing reconstructed source.
- Source port: adapts available source code to another platform. It may be based on reverse-engineered source, but “source port” describes the porting result, not necessarily how the source was obtained.
- Behavioral reconstruction: documents how a game behaves and recreates key algorithms or systems without producing a clean, recompilable decompile.
- Remake or recreation: rebuilds a game, often from scratch, rather than translating its original code.
A project’s percentage of code or functions decompiled therefore does not tell you by itself whether there is a public, complete or polished playable release.
Which reverse-engineered game projects are notable now?
These examples illustrate different approaches and readiness levels. They are a dated cross-section, not a complete list of game decomps or ports; check each project’s current status before relying on older availability or compatibility reports.

Halo: Combat Evolved in a browser
A PC Gamer report dated October 1, 2026 described a fan-made browser build based on decompilation work, with campaign and multiplayer play. The report said it worked on Windows, Linux and Android. The developer advertised multiplayer capacity of up to 128 players, but PC Gamer explicitly said that capacity had not been tested; it should be treated as an advertised feature, not a verified match size. The developer also reported nearly 20,000 games played across 115 countries in the first five hours, a developer-provided figure relayed by PC Gamer rather than independently audited usage. HaloCEVR
HaloCEVR’s project README describes a VR conversion for the original 2003 PC edition of Halo: Combat Evolved; it is not compatible with The Master Chief Collection. Listed features include six-degree-of-freedom stereo view, tracked controllers, six-degree-of-freedom weapon and grenade aiming, and motion-controlled interactions.

The manual installation instructions require an installation CD for the original PC game, its product key and the 1.0.10 PC patch. This is a fan project, not an officially supported Microsoft product. Those edition-specific requirements matter: owning a different release does not establish compatibility.
Spyro the Dragon: decompilation and recompilation hybrid
On June 28, 2026, PC Gamer reported that an OpenPETE hybrid project had been demonstrated running natively on Windows 11. The report attributed claims of 60 fps and true widescreen to the developer’s demonstration; it also described the project as unfinished, with visual artifacting and awkward camera motion, and said it was not public at that time. Midwinter: behavioral reconstruction, not a clean decompile
The Midwinter Remaster project news page, marked June 2026, says the team mapped and documented 602 reachable functions, reconstructed major systems and reimplemented key algorithms to verify them. The project explicitly characterizes this as comprehensive reverse-engineering and behavioral reconstruction, not a clean recompilable decompile. Its analysis repository is described as MIT-licensed and excludes the original game. The same page flags about 20 low-confidence findings for runtime testing, so not every reconstructed detail has the same confidence.
Banjo-Tooie recompilation and disputed project identity
GamesRadar reported on October 2, 2026 that a Banjo-Tooie recompilation disclosed substantial AI-generated code. The report quotes Dario, a developer associated with Zelda: Recompiled and Banjo: Recompiled, saying the Banjo-Tooie Recompilation “is NOT associated with us.” Dario also stated that those projects have clear no-AI policies. This describes the named developer’s position about those projects; it should not be generalized into an industry-wide policy or treated as proof of affiliation between separate projects. How to judge whether a project is playable and suitable
Compare the project on the dimensions that affect actual use, rather than relying on a headline such as “decompiled” or a progress percentage.

Do these projects include the original game?
Not necessarily. The Unricopie catalog says it lists source code rather than ROMs or copyrighted game assets and expects users to provide their own legal game copy. HaloCEVR specifically requires the original PC edition’s CD and product key. A catalog entry or browser build does not, on its own, establish rights-holder authorization or tell you what game files are supplied. Check the individual project’s terms and requirements; do not assume a source release includes the game.

Are “3D ports” a separate category?
“3D port” is ambiguous: it could mean a game ported to 3D, a three-dimensional version, or simply a port described as 3D. The available examples do not establish a representative separate category or a current launch list under that label. For a specific project, use its own description to determine what was changed and which platform it targets rather than treating “3D port” as a consistent technical method.
