Retro game emulation uses software to reproduce the behavior of older consoles and computers. A frontend provides shared controls and audio, video, and input handling; a system-specific core emulates a particular machine. Whether a game works depends on the content, core, firmware requirements, and software versions—not just the emulator’s name. Save states are also different from a game’s ordinary save files.

What an emulator frontend and core do

In a frontend-and-core setup, the frontend is the application you use to manage games and common functions such as controls and audio or video output. A core implements the behavior of a particular console or computer. Libretro describes its interface as a way for programs to use features provided by a frontend.

This division means that installing a frontend does not automatically provide support for every retro system. You need a core that supports the system and the format of the game content you want to use. Check the core’s own documentation for supported systems, file formats, firmware requirements, and save features.

Which systems do documented cores support?

These examples show why it is more useful to check a core’s documented scope than to assume that every emulator supports every system.

Core Documented system support Documented setup or feature detail
Gearboy Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy Supports battery-backed RAM saves and save states. Its guide says a save state cannot be used while a boot ROM is executing.
SameBoy Game Boy and Game Boy Color Lists battery saves and save states. Its documented core includes open-source DMG and CGB boot ROMs.
Mesen NES and Famicom The project reports support for more than 220 mappers. That figure is a Mesen-specific project claim, not a general measure of compatibility across systems.

These system and feature details come from the respective Gearboy, SameBoy, and Mesen project documentation. They do not establish support on every host device or guarantee that a particular game will run.

Why compatibility varies

Compatibility belongs to a particular combination of game data, core, firmware, and software versions. A game may fail even when its system appears to be supported.

  • Game data: Gearboy’s guide says invalid ROMs may fail to boot. A damaged or otherwise unsupported file can therefore be a problem even with an appropriate core.
  • Core and system support: Confirm that the selected core supports the target system and content format. A frontend alone does not determine that.
  • Firmware: Some cores need BIOS files; others provide open-source boot ROMs. Check the selected core’s instructions rather than copying a firmware setup from another system.
  • Version matching: For MAME Software Lists, the guide says each core needs its own distinct romset version, and some sets may depend on parent sets or BIOS files. It advises matching emulator and game versions for maximum compatibility.

Project feature lists and isolated compatibility claims are not a universal ranking. When comparing options, look for documented system and format support, firmware requirements, compatibility evidence, host-platform support, save behavior, and setup instructions. The documentation cited here does not provide a current compatibility matrix for every core, game, and host platform.

BIOS files, boot ROMs, and game content

A BIOS is a copy of an emulated system’s operating system. Libretro’s BIOS guide explains that some cores require BIOS files, but the required files and their locations vary. Use the instructions for the specific core you have chosen; there is no single BIOS folder or requirement that applies to every emulator.

SameBoy’s documented core includes open-source DMG and CGB boot ROMs, so that core does not require real BIOS files. This is a SameBoy-specific detail, not evidence that other cores also include the firmware they need.

Libretro’s BIOS guide states: “You must provide your own BIOS and content in accordance with your local laws as applicable.” This is the guide’s instruction, not a universal legal ruling. Laws concerning game images and firmware depend on jurisdiction and circumstances; the sources cited here do not establish whether a particular copy or acquisition method is lawful. Nintendo UK states that unauthorized emulators negatively affect gameplay and the video game industry. That is Nintendo’s position, not a court ruling or a complete account of the law.

Save states versus ordinary game saves

These are separate ways to preserve progress. An ordinary save is made through the game’s own save system, such as battery-backed save memory. A save state stores emulator state so you can resume from a particular point. A core may support one, both, or neither; check its documentation.

Save type What it records Practical consideration
Ordinary game save Progress recorded through the game’s save mechanism, including battery-backed RAM where supported. It is distinct from the emulator’s state files. Preserve it separately when changing cores or updating software.
Save state A stored emulator state that lets you resume from a particular point. Availability can have core-specific restrictions. Gearboy, for example, says save states are unavailable while a boot ROM is executing.

The documentation cited here does not establish that save states transfer between different cores or software versions. Before switching cores or updating an emulator, back up both ordinary game saves and state files; keeping them separate avoids treating one kind of save as a substitute for the other.

A practical way to choose and set up a core

  1. Identify the system and content format. Look up the target system and file-format requirements in the core’s documentation.
  2. Check firmware instructions. Find out whether that core needs BIOS files or includes boot ROMs, then follow its documented location and setup guidance.
  3. Match versions where required. For MAME Software Lists, check the core’s romset version and whether the selected set depends on a parent set or BIOS files.
  4. Check save support and restrictions. Confirm whether the core supports ordinary saves and save states, and note any limits that affect when a state can be made.
  5. Test with your own setup. If content does not boot, check that the file is valid and that the core, content, and any required firmware match the documented requirements.
  6. Back up before changes. Keep ordinary saves and save states separate before updating software or switching cores.

A USB game controller is an optional input device, not a requirement established for every setup. Frontends handle input, but compatibility depends on the device and software; check both before choosing a controller.
