For most people who want classic games ready to play on a modern TV, a mini console is the easier option: it connects over HDMI and comes with a defined game library. Choose original hardware if using the original console and physical cartridges is the point. What the NES and SNES Classic include
NES Classic Mini
Nintendo describes the NES Classic Mini as a smaller NES that connects to a television over HDMI. It includes 30 preinstalled games, one controller, an HDMI cable, and a USB power cable. SNES Classic Mini
The SNES Classic Mini includes 21 preinstalled games, two wired controllers, an HDMI cable, and a USB power cable. It requires a USB AC adapter, sold separately. The UK product page specifies that the included games are the original US 60 Hz releases, so check the regional details of the unit you are considering. Pick a mini if its included lineup suits you
“Classic games” is not one universal library. The SNES Classic’s official US lineup includes Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Star Fox 2, Contra III, Donkey Kong Country, F-ZERO, Mega Man X, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Check the exact model’s included games before buying: a mini is a compact way to play its bundled selection, not a way to browse a complete library of a console’s releases. Pick original hardware if physical games are central
An original console is the relevant choice when you specifically want the original system and physical game format. Your decision will depend on the particular console, its condition, regional version, and the games you want. The available evidence does not establish a general winner for image quality, latency, reliability, modern-TV compatibility, or the cost of buying a working console and cartridges.
Can you add games to a mini console?
Not through Nintendo’s supported methods. Nintendo says games cannot be downloaded to the NES Classic Edition or SNES Classic Edition, and the systems do not support external storage. What setup should you expect?
- NES Classic: HDMI connection, one included controller, and a USB power cable; provide the required AC adapter separately.
- SNES Classic: HDMI connection, two included wired controllers, and a USB power cable; provide the required USB AC adapter separately.
- Original hardware: Confirm the connection method and power requirements for the exact console and the TV you plan to use. Compatibility with modern TVs is not established as a general rule here.
For the SNES Classic in particular, verify that any separately sourced power adapter is compatible with the specific unit. Do not assume every USB adapter is suitable.
When a subscription may be a better fit
Nintendo Switch Online is a separate access model rather than a direct comparison between original and mini hardware. Members can access classic NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries while their membership is active. The Expansion Pack adds access to further libraries, including Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and Nintendo GameCube on Switch 2. Catalogs, eligible devices, and prices can change, so check the current membership details and game catalog before subscribing.

Nintendo warns that counterfeit retro hardware and devices sold with unauthorized preloaded games are a real concern. Before buying a used or unusually cheap listing, check the seller, packaging, condition, model and region, and the item’s provenance. How to make the decision
- Write down the specific games you want. Compare them with the mini’s official included list or the current subscription catalog; do not rely on a broad “retro games” label.
- Decide whether physical media matters. If you want to use original hardware and cartridges, a mini’s fixed preinstalled library is not a substitute.
- Check the living-room setup. For a Nintendo mini, confirm HDMI is available and account for the separately required power adapter. For an original system, verify its exact TV connection and power needs.
- Choose the access model. A mini is a fixed-library hardware purchase; a subscription requires an active membership and periodic online verification for offline play.
- Verify the listing. Check regional model, condition, seller credibility, and authenticity before purchasing older hardware or cartridges.
