Choose Restreamer if you want a self-hosted web interface for configuring a YouTube stream and its publishing workflow. Choose FFmpeg directly if you want to define the media pipeline, retries, and process behavior in commands and service configuration. Restreamer itself uses FFmpeg-based processing, so the real difference is the application layer and how much orchestration you manage—not whether FFmpeg is involved.
Neither option removes the need to operate a persistent host, monitor the broadcast, and plan for YouTube’s archive limit. For a cloud-managed alternative that keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is another option.
Restreamer vs FFmpeg: what is actually different?
Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming application with a browser-based configuration and publication workflow. Its YouTube guide describes selecting YouTube as a publication service and entering the streaming ID. FFmpeg is the underlying media tool you configure more directly: you specify the input, encoding and output behavior, then arrange retries and supervision around the process.
Restreamer uses FFmpeg-based processing, so this is primarily a comparison of an integrated application layer with direct control of the media tool. The documented feature differences do not establish that either approach has better uptime, lower resource use, or lower cost in a real 24/7 deployment.

Which option should you choose?
Choose Restreamer if you prefer a web workflow
- You want to configure a self-hosted streaming application through a browser rather than build the whole publishing workflow in a command.
- You are comfortable deploying and maintaining a Dockerized service, configuring the required network ports, and operating its host.
- You want a guided publication workflow for the YouTube destination.
Choose FFmpeg directly if you need scripting control
- You already work comfortably with command-line media tools and service supervision.
- You need a custom media pipeline or precise control over inputs, encoding, output, and protocol behavior.
- You are prepared to write and maintain the command, add process supervision, retain logs, and monitor failures.
For either choice, base the decision on your host’s capacity, available upload bandwidth, administrative experience, recovery plan, and whether you need a separate local recording. The available documentation does not support a blanket claim that one is more stable or cheaper.

Configure YouTube ingest settings
Use the current recommendations on YouTube’s encoder settings page when configuring either route. The listed options include RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed figures on the settings page accessed in 2026, not measurements of a particular server or connection. The same page recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate your actual outbound connection can sustain; YouTube’s streaming tips advise allowing about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.

Protect your stream key
Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the stream URL and key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the associated ingest endpoint. Do not include it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls and update the Restreamer publication settings or FFmpeg output configuration.
Set up the workflow you selected
Restreamer workflow
- Deploy Restreamer on a persistent host. Use the project’s deployment guidance and configure the host and network ports required by your setup. A browser interface does not remove the need to maintain the service and host.
- Configure the video source. In Restreamer’s web interface, set up the source you intend to send. Test the source before treating the channel as unattended.
- Add YouTube as the publication destination. Follow the YouTube publication guide to select the publishing service and enter the YouTube streaming ID or key as instructed.
- Check the encoder and network. Match YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, including codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and a bitrate that leaves upload headroom.
- Run an end-to-end test and monitor it. Confirm the picture and sound in YouTube Live Control Room. Configure host or service restart behavior, retain logs, and monitor the broadcast; deployment alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Direct FFmpeg workflow
- Choose a persistent host and a stable input. Make sure the source file or input remains available and that the host has enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected bitrate plus headroom.
- Build an FFmpeg command for the source and destination. Specify the input, video and audio codecs, output container/protocol, YouTube ingest URL, and stream key. Set a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Add reconnection behavior appropriate to the input. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes options such as reconnecting at EOF for live or endless sources, retry limits, and delay caps. These protocol options do not replace handling a dead input, an exited FFmpeg process, or a failed host.
- Supervise the process. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or equivalent supervisor that can restart the process when appropriate. Capture logs and make sure a restart does not create an uncontrolled loop when configuration, credentials, or the source is invalid.
- Test and observe the YouTube feed. Check the result in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm audio and video, and observe the process and logs through a representative run before relying on it unattended.
FFmpeg’s reconnect flags and their behavior depend on the protocol and input; consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options supported by the protocol you use. No single command is appropriate for every source, codec, or deployment.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A continuous 24/7 broadcast and a complete YouTube archive are different requirements. YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full program matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting YouTube events before the 12-hour mark. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
This limitation applies whether the stream is sent through Restreamer or directly through FFmpeg. Check the archive and recording plan separately from the decision about how to keep the feed online.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 streaming problems
- YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the ingest URL, stream key, destination configuration, and that the YouTube event is ready to receive the encoder. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed.
- The stream disconnects or buffers: check sustained outbound capacity, allow roughly 20% headroom above the chosen bitrate, and investigate shared-network congestion. Review encoder and YouTube stream-health indications.
- The stream fails after the input ends: a completed file is not an endless source. Use a suitable looping or live-input workflow, and configure process supervision as well as any relevant protocol reconnect options.
- Restreamer or FFmpeg stops and stays stopped: inspect service and process logs, then configure and test host-level restart behavior. A reconnect option alone does not supervise a crashed process.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: do not assume YouTube will retain one uninterrupted event beyond 12 hours. Keep a local recording and schedule event restarts if a complete archive is required.
- Audio or video looks wrong: check the source, selected codecs, bitrate mode, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings; confirm the result in Live Control Room.
