You may want to enlarge the Outlook window, make the text easier to read, zoom in on one email, or give the message list and Reading Pane more room. These controls are separate, so the right fix depends on what looks too small.
Use the section for your version of Outlook: new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, Outlook for Mac, or the mobile app.

Make Outlook larger with Windows display scaling
If the entire Outlook interface—including the folders, buttons, message list, and Reading Pane—is difficult to read, change Windows’ display scaling. This affects other applications too.
- Select Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Find Scale & layout.
- Open the Scale menu.
- Choose a larger percentage, preferably the option marked Recommended.
Display scaling increases the apparent size of text and interface elements without changing the monitor’s basic resolution. Avoid changing Display resolution just to enlarge text. A non-recommended resolution can make the screen look less sharp or cause windows and controls to fit poorly.

This changes display text in areas such as the folder pane, message list, and Reading Pane.
Change the message preview font
- Select Outlook > Settings.

Common Outlook resizing problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The Zoom command is greyed out in new Outlook | Select an email so it appears in the Reading Pane. |
| Zoom disappears when you select another email | This is expected in new Outlook; its Reading Pane zoom is temporary for the current message. |
| The message body is larger but the message list is still tiny | Change message-list text separately using the new Outlook Layout settings or classic Outlook’s Row Font and Column Font controls. |
| The Folder Pane takes too much room | Minimize it or select View > Folder Pane > Off in classic Outlook. |
| Outlook.com is still too small | Increase the browser’s page zoom rather than looking for a classic Outlook Reading Pane zoom command. |
| Instructions do not match the screen | Check whether you are using new Outlook or classic Outlook. Their menus are different. |
What does not resize all of Outlook?
Ctrl + mouse wheel does not resize the whole Outlook application. In classic Outlook, it is associated with message-content or Reading Pane zoom. In Outlook on the web, browser zoom affects the web page.
Likewise, changing the zoom of one email does not permanently enlarge every email. New Outlook applies that Reading Pane adjustment only to the selected message. If you need larger controls throughout Outlook, use Windows scaling, Mac display settings, or the application’s message-list and font settings.

The mobile app does not have a desktop-style window-resize control. Increase the device’s font or display size instead. On Android, Microsoft documents Settings > Display and wallpaper > Font.
The Bottom Line
For a larger Outlook window, resize or maximize the application. For larger text everywhere, change Windows scaling or macOS display settings. For a larger email, use the appropriate Reading Pane or browser zoom. If the message list or panes are the problem, adjust Outlook’s layout separately—one zoom setting does not control every part of the app.
