Resident Evil remakes are new interpretations, not one-size-fits-all upgrades. The clearest documented differences are in Resident Evil 2 (2019), where tougher zombies, altered progression and character details change the experience, and Resident Evil 3 (2020), which reworks the original’s dodge mechanic and story elements. Compare each game pair on its own: a change made in one remake does not describe the whole series.

What counts as a Resident Evil remake?

Capcom’s chronology identifies the 2002 Resident Evil as a remake of the 1996 game, Resident Evil 2 (2019) as a remake of the January 1998 release, and Resident Evil 3 (2020) as a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (September 1999). Capcom describes Resident Evil 4 (2023) as based on the 2005 game. These are distinct projects, so the differences vary by entry. Capcom’s series timeline provides the release context.

For Resident Evil 2, Capcom uses the term “reimagining” and says the 2019 game was built from the ground up for then-current-generation platforms. It is not simply a remaster that updates resolution and textures. Capcom’s 2022 announcement calls it a reimagining; its 2019 release announcement describes the ground-up build.

Resident Evil 2 (1998) vs. Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Capcom’s official February 1, 2021 retrospective gives several concrete examples. They show changes to combat pressure, pacing, character presentation and item discovery—not just visual fidelity. The examples are illustrative, not a complete audit of every difference. Read Capcom’s RE2 retrospective.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Combat and resource pressure

Capcom describes the remake’s zombies as unusually tough: a head shot does not always take one down. That changes how a player weighs ammunition against the risk of leaving an enemy alive in a corridor. The two games therefore differ in practical combat feel as well as presentation.

Location order and pacing

Gun Shop Kendo appears earlier in the original; in the remake, the player reaches it around the middle of the game. Capcom also notes that the location itself was substantially changed. A familiar place can therefore arrive at a different point in the journey and serve a different pacing role.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Character details and discoveries

Ada’s presentation shifts toward that of a spy, and the remake gives her an EMF Visualizer. The device detects and projects electromagnetic fields and can remotely control some electronics. The Rebecca Chambers photograph is also obtained differently: Capcom says the original required repeatedly examining a desk in the S.T.A.R.S. office, while the remake changes the method.

Capcom says the remake is more than a rehash and can be enjoyed without having played the original. If you do know the 1998 game, its differences in timing, details and progression give you new things to notice; prior familiarity is not a prerequisite.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) vs. Resident Evil 3 (2020)

The clearest official comparisons concern the dodge mechanic and changes to supporting characters and story details. Capcom’s February 19, 2021 retrospective discusses examples rather than claiming an exhaustive list. Read Capcom’s RE3 retrospective.

Dodge timing and execution

The original Resident Evil 3 was the series’ first entry to introduce dodging, and the remake brings the mechanic back. But it does not make the two versions play identically: Capcom describes the remake’s dodge timing as surprisingly tight and its execution as different enough to challenge players who know the original.

Story and characterization

Capcom notes changed portrayals of U.B.C.S. characters and differences in Murphy’s fate and when events involving him occur. The remake also introduces parasites and includes continuity details such as Big E posters. These examples establish that story presentation and characterization change, but they do not support treating the two narratives as identical or listing every alteration.

What about the first Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4?

Capcom’s timeline confirms the 2002 first-game remake’s relationship to the 1996 original, and official Capcom material identifies Resident Evil 4 (2023) as based on the 2005 game. The comparisons cited here do not provide the same feature-by-feature detail for those pairs as Capcom’s RE2 and RE3 retrospectives do. That means specific claims about their mechanics, scenes or level changes cannot be established from these comparisons; it does not mean that no differences exist.

How to compare an original and its remake

Use the same questions for both games, but look for evidence entry by entry. A category may matter in one remake and have no documented change in another.

  • Presentation: How do character and enemy designs, environments, lighting, sound and camera perspective differ?
  • Controls and combat: Compare movement, aiming, defensive actions, enemy resilience and the pressure placed on ammunition or healing items.
  • Level and encounter design: Check route order, room layout, enemy placement, puzzles and when key locations are visited.
  • Story and characterization: Look for shifts in scene order, motives, relationships, dialogue and supporting characters’ fates.
  • Content and progression: Compare how clues or items are found, as well as unlocks, bonus modes and side stories.
  • Edition and access: Confirm the platform, edition and included content before comparing versions or buying.

Which version should you play?

Choose based on what you want from the experience, not a blanket claim that remakes are better or worse. If you want the particular version Capcom documented in its examples—tougher-feeling zombie encounters and changed progression in RE2, or a reworked dodge experience and story details in RE3—the remakes are the relevant versions. If you want to see the earlier releases’ design choices directly, play the corresponding originals. You can also play a remake first: Capcom says the RE2 remake does not require prior experience with the original.

Release and bundle details to check

Availability and included content depend on platform and edition, so verify the store page for the version you intend to buy. On November 22, 2024, Capcom announced a digital Resident Evil Remake Trilogy containing Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, the Resident Evil 3 Classic Costume Pack, Resident Evil Resistance, Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition and Resident Evil 4: The Mercenaries. Capcom says some items can also be purchased individually and notes that Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition is not compatible with Xbox One. The bundle announcement is not a substitute for checking the exact listing on your storefront.

Capcom announced Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 for October 16, 2026. As of October 4, 2026, that is an announced upcoming date, not a completed release. Check current platform listings for availability.
