Resident Evil Requiem is the scariest entry in one current editorial ranking, while the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake is another top pick for sustained fear. There is no official Capcom ranking of the series by scare level or difficulty, and the hardest game depends heavily on the mode you choose. The lists below are editorial assessments, not measured scores: they cover the mainline games and remakes, compare scares separately from challenge, and assume a first-time player on a standard difficulty setting. Spin-offs and bonus modes are outside the ranking.

How to read these rankings

Scare level here means how strongly a game sustains fear through atmosphere, vulnerability, pursuit pressure, body horror, sudden shocks, and perspective. Difficulty means the demands of combat, ammunition and healing management, puzzles, and saving or checkpoint pressure. These are separate judgments: a game can be deeply unsettling without being the most demanding to finish.

Capcom describes the series as a fight against fear, mystery-solving, and survival, and says Resident Evil began in 1996. Its 2025 Online Integrated Report reported more than 170 million units sold as of March 31, 2025; that dated figure is not a current sales total. Difficulty settings, remake mechanics, controls, and familiarity can all change the experience, so the difficulty order is deliberately presented in broad tiers.

Resident Evil games ranked by scare level

This scare ranking includes mainline releases and major remakes, including the 2026 release Resident Evil Requiem. It is an editorial ordering, not a Capcom scale. GamesRadar+ currently places Requiem first with a 10/10 scare rating and Resident Evil 2 Remake at 9/10; those are that outlet’s judgments, not standardized measurements.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Resident Evil Requiem — The strongest overall scare pick in GamesRadar+’s current roundup, with a 10/10 editorial rating. Treat that rating as one critic’s assessment rather than a guarantee that every player will find it the scariest.
  2. Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) — GamesRadar+ rates it 9/10. Its pressure and threat make it a strong choice for players who want fear that persists beyond isolated jump scares. GameSpot also ranks both versions of Resident Evil 2 first in its best-games list and notes that the 2019 remake retains the series’ scares.
  3. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — The first-person perspective makes its horror feel unusually close and immediate, a quality GamesRadar+ highlights. The tighter viewpoint can intensify vulnerability and body horror.
  4. Resident Evil Village — Its horror presentation varies across the game, but it remains a major option for players drawn to first-person survival horror. Capcom lists Village among the games with a VR version; virtual reality can make proximity and vulnerability feel more intense for some players.
  5. Resident Evil (2002 remake) — A slower, more atmospheric entry whose enclosed setting and careful pacing favor lingering tension over constant action. It is a good fit for players who prefer gothic unease to relentless pursuit.
  6. Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake) — Pursuit pressure and sudden danger provide its main scare appeal, though its pace leans more toward action than the top entries on this list.
  7. Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) — It combines unsettling imagery and dangerous encounters with a stronger action focus. Capcom lists Resident Evil 4 as having a VR version, which may change how close the encounters feel.
  8. Resident Evil 5 — It has threatening set pieces, but its emphasis on action and cooperative play generally makes it less focused on sustained fear than the entries above.
  9. Resident Evil 6 — Its action-heavy structure and broad campaign approach make it the least consistently frightening pick in this mainline comparison.

Capcom’s guide to choosing a first or next Resident Evil game, published October 18, 2024, also identifies Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 4, and Village as having VR versions. VR is an optional presentation difference, not a separate game or an objective increase in scare rating.

Resident Evil games ranked by difficulty

There is no standardized franchise-wide difficulty ranking in the cited sources. This practical ordering assumes a first playthrough on a standard, non-hardcore setting, with no bonus weapons, unlocks, or co-op partner. It weighs combat demands and resource pressure alongside puzzle friction and save or checkpoint constraints. The tiers are more reliable than fine distinctions within a tier.

More demanding for a first playthrough

  1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — Close-range encounters and limited resources can make ordinary fights punishing when you are still learning enemy behavior and routes.
  2. Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) — Careful ammunition use, route planning, and managing threats in constrained spaces are central to staying in control.
  3. Resident Evil (2002 remake) — Exploration and puzzle friction combine with limited supplies; players unfamiliar with classic survival-horror conventions may find progress slow.

Moderate challenge, with pressure shaped by play style

  1. Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake) — The brisk pace and pursuit sequences demand quick reactions, but its action-forward design changes the balance of the challenge.
  2. Resident Evil Village — Combat and resource management matter, but its mix of encounter styles makes difficulty less uniform from one section to another.
  3. Resident Evil Requiem — It is included as a current mainline entry, but difficulty is particularly sensitive to mode and player familiarity. No comparable franchise-wide difficulty rating establishes a precise position for it.

More action-forward on the assumed setting

  1. Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) — Combat is demanding, but the expanded action tools make it more forgiving than the most resource-constrained entries for many first-time players.
  2. Resident Evil 5 — Its action focus and co-op option can ease pressure, although solo play and resource coordination still matter.
  3. Resident Evil 6 — Its combat-heavy structure and generous action options make it a comparatively accessible starting point for players who value action over survival-resource management.

These placements should not be read as a universal hardest-to-easiest verdict. Higher modes, unfamiliar controls, solo versus co-op play, and bonus modes can change the order substantially. For another useful distinction, Metacritic’s Resident Evil listings rank games by Metascore, not by fear or difficulty; its inclusion rules also distinguish substantial remakes and selected versions.

Which Resident Evil game should you start with?

  • For maximum current scare appeal: start with Resident Evil Requiem, the top scare pick in GamesRadar+’s roundup.
  • For a strong balance of fear and survival-horror challenge: choose the Resident Evil 2 remake.
  • For close, first-person horror: choose Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. If you are considering VR, confirm the edition and platform before buying.
  • For a more action-led entry: try the Resident Evil 4 remake or Resident Evil 5.
  • For a classic-feeling, slower survival-horror experience: try the Resident Evil (2002 remake).

Why review scores do not settle the ranking

A review aggregate answers how critics scored a game, not how frightening or difficult it is. Metacritic’s methodology generally uses the first release, selects the most-reviewed platform for simultaneous releases, counts substantial remakes separately, and omits some mobile titles, Re:Verse, and Gaiden. Its list can help compare reception, but it is not evidence for a scare or difficulty order.
