Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a strong fit if you want close-up first-person survival horror centered on fear, exploration, and atmosphere. Its intimate viewpoint is also a matter of taste, and movement may feel slow if you prefer fast, action-heavy games. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you value tension over speed—and, if you are buying, which edition and platform listing you choose.
What kind of game is Resident Evil 7?
Capcom presented Resident Evil 7 as a return to survival horror, with fear, exploration, and tense atmosphere as central design priorities. Its most visible change is the first-person camera, a shift Capcom said was intended to create a deeply immersive horror experience. That close perspective can make rooms and threats feel personal, though how frightening it feels will depend on the player.

Pros of Resident Evil 7
First-person perspective makes the horror immediate
The camera places you close to what is happening rather than showing the protagonist from behind. That can make searching unfamiliar spaces and encountering danger feel more direct. If you enjoy horror games that limit what you can see and make exploration itself tense, this is the game’s clearest strength.
A focused atmosphere for survival-horror fans
Capcom’s stated emphasis on fear and exploration gives the game a different priority from an action-first shooter. Players looking for a sustained, uneasy mood may appreciate that focus. The atmosphere is not a guaranteed scare for everyone, but it is a deliberate part of the experience rather than decoration around constant action.

#1 Best Overall
- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Gold Edition bundles the base game and named DLC
Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition product page lists the base game, Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2, and End of Zoe. Capcom separately described Not a Hero as free DLC for owners in its Not a Hero announcement. Check the specific platform and regional listing before purchase, since those pages do not establish that every package includes identical content.
Cons and trade-offs
First person may not suit fans of third-person Resident Evil
The viewpoint is a major departure from the earlier third-person camera. If you prefer seeing the protagonist and more of the surrounding space at once, the close first-person view may feel restrictive rather than immersive. This is a preference trade-off, not a flaw that applies to every player.

Movement can feel slow
TIME’s January 2017 review praised the isolated settings and creeping viewpoint but criticized the slow movement. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict; still, it is worth considering if you expect quick traversal or consistently fast combat.
Platform and edition details vary by listing
Compatibility, format, and included content should be checked on the storefront for your console or PC and region. The PlayStation US listing, for example, says PS5 play may require the latest system software. The available product information does not establish a complete current compatibility matrix or identical physical and digital package contents across regions.

Who should play it?
- Good fit: You want first-person survival horror, exploration, and a tense atmosphere more than nonstop action.
- Consider another entry: You strongly prefer a third-person view, faster movement, or a more action-forward pace.
- When comparing editions: Choose based on whether you want the Gold Edition’s listed Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2 and End of Zoe, and verify Not a Hero and other content on your own storefront.
What its sales milestone does—and does not—tell you
Capcom reported that Resident Evil 7 biohazard had shipped more than 10 million units worldwide in an October 11, 2021 announcement. That is a dated shipment milestone, not a current sales total or proof that the game will match your preferences.
