A reset supervisor monitors a digital system’s power-up conditions and controls its reset line so the system can be initialized when transient states could otherwise interfere. The right part depends on the circuit’s supply, reset interface, timing, package, temperature range, and whether it also needs a watchdog. A 2016 PW-Sat2 design review provides a concrete example, not a universal parts recommendation.
What is a reset supervisor?
A reset supervisor is an integrated circuit used with a digital system’s reset line. In the PW-Sat2 Electrical Power System Phase B Preliminary Design Review, supervisors are specified to protect digital electronics from transient states during power-up and to provide circuit initialization and timing supervision.
In practical terms, the supervisor is part of the system’s startup and reset logic: it helps ensure that connected electronics receive the reset behavior the design requires. The specific voltage threshold and timing behavior must be checked against the component datasheet and the target circuit; the PW-Sat2 review does not establish universal settings for other boards.
What did the PW-Sat2 design select?
The review, dated November 22, 2016, separates a basic reset-supervisor requirement from a requirement that also includes watchdog behavior. Its choices document what that project specified at the time, not what a new design should automatically use.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Design role in the review | Selected component | Documented details |
|---|---|---|
| Reset supervisor | Texas Instruments TPS3836L33 | Selected for circuit initialization and timing supervision against the project’s listed requirements. |
| Reset supervisor with watchdog | Texas Instruments TPS3813K33 | Described in the review as including a reset supervisor and a window watchdog with programmable delay and window ratio. |
These are historical selections from the PW-Sat2 review. The document alone does not establish current specifications, lifecycle status, stock, or suitability for another circuit.
Which requirements should you check?
Start with the electrical and mechanical requirements of the board, then establish whether a watchdog is actually needed. The PW-Sat2 review gives one example of how specific those requirements can be:

| Requirement | PW-Sat2 example | What to verify for your design |
|---|---|---|
| Operating input voltage | 3.3 V standard operating input | Confirm the full supply range and the supervisor’s monitored threshold in the current datasheet. |
| Reset output | Open-drain/open-collector | Match the output topology to the reset input, pull-up arrangement, and logic levels on the board. |
| Package | SOT-23 | Check board footprint, assembly constraints, and the exact package variant. |
| Operating temperature | At least −40°C to 85°C | Choose a rated range that covers the product’s actual operating environment. |
| Manual reset | Required | Determine whether the design needs a manual reset input and how it will be connected. |
| Watchdog | Separate watchdog requirement in the review | Decide whether firmware-failure monitoring is in scope, and verify watchdog timing and configuration requirements. |
When do you need a watchdog reset supervisor?
A reset supervisor and a watchdog address related but distinct design needs. In the PW-Sat2 review, the TPS3836L33 is selected for reset supervision, while the TPS3813K33 is selected where the requirement also calls for a window watchdog. A watchdog-capable part is relevant only when the system needs that additional monitoring; its presence should not be treated as a substitute for checking ordinary reset and power requirements.
For a watchdog selection, verify the required watchdog window and delay, how the firmware services it, and what reset response the system needs if servicing fails. The PW-Sat2 review identifies programmable delay and window ratio for its selected watchdog component, but does not establish settings suitable for other products.

How to choose a reset supervisor for a new board
- Define the supply conditions. Record the board’s supply range and the voltage threshold at which reset should be asserted. Confirm both against the current component datasheet.
- Match the reset interface. Check output topology, compatible logic levels, pull-up needs, and connections to the target device’s reset input.
- Set reset timing needs. Identify any required reset delay or initialization behavior and confirm that the part supports it.
- Decide whether manual reset is needed. If so, verify the supervisor’s manual-reset function and its interface requirements.
- Assess watchdog requirements separately. If the system must detect missed firmware activity, evaluate watchdog mode, timing, and configuration rather than choosing a basic supervisor by default.
- Check implementation constraints. Confirm package, footprint, operating-temperature rating, and the exact orderable part against the board and project environment.
- Validate the exact part before purchase. For the TPS3836L33 or TPS3813K33, use current manufacturer documentation to confirm specifications, suffix, package, lifecycle status, and availability. The 2016 project review is not a current stock or purchasing reference.
Does “reset supervisors” mean something else?
The phrase can also refer to workplace-wellness material about supervisors taking time to recover or reflect after stress. EON Reality uses “weekly supervisor reset sessions” on a course page titled “Wellness & Stress Management for Supervisors.” That is a separate, vendor-authored workplace context—not the electronics meaning used in the PW-Sat2 design review and not evidence of a standardized technical term.
