Fast16 is a malware sample dated to about 2005 that appears designed to alter calculations inside selected engineering and simulation software. SentinelLABS researchers found rules matching three possible software targets; a later analysis by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) proposed a narrower nuclear-simulation interpretation. Neither analysis publicly confirms a victim, an operator, or a physical incident caused by the malware.

What Fast16 was designed to do

SentinelLABS describes Fast16 as an in-memory patching framework: instead of visibly destroying files or simply stealing data, it could change how selected applications performed calculations while they were running. Its apparent objective was to introduce subtle errors into high-precision engineering or simulation results, potentially making those results unreliable without immediately making the software appear broken.

The examined sample combined a Lua-powered carrier with a kernel driver. SentinelLABS reports that the driver watched application code as it loaded and used patterns or rules to recognize code paths associated with targeted calculations. When it found a match, the framework could patch behavior in memory. The carrier also had network-propagation behavior.

WIRED reported that the sample could spread across Windows network shares, check for security products, and infect other machines in a lab. That behavior matters to validation: comparing a result with another system would not necessarily help if that system had also been infected. These are findings about the examined sample, not evidence of a current Fast16 outbreak.

What is known about Fast16’s timeline

Milestone What happened
About 2005 The sample is dated to approximately this year. The date does not identify who operated it, where it was used, or whether it succeeded.
2017 The name “Fast16” appeared in “Territorial Dispute,” material in the Shadow Brokers leak. The leak did not include a binary identified as Fast16.
2019 SentinelOne researcher Juan Andrés Guerrero-Saade found a sample in VirusTotal archives.
2026 SentinelLABS published its technical analysis. ISIS published a separate interpretation on May 18, 2026.

The milestones are distinct: the sample’s approximate date, the public appearance of its name, the later discovery of a sample, and the technical reporting. In particular, the 2017 leak is not itself proof that the leaked material contained the analyzed binary.

Which software might Fast16 have targeted?

SentinelLABS compared the malware’s patching rules with software used in the relevant period and identified three candidate suites. A pattern match supports a possible intended target; it does not establish that a particular product installation was infected or used by a documented victim.

Software What it is used for What the analysis supports
MOHID Hydrodynamic modeling One of SentinelLABS’s three candidate targets, based on matches to the malware’s rules.
PKPM Construction engineering One of SentinelLABS’s three candidate targets, based on matches to the malware’s rules.
LS-DYNA General-purpose engineering simulation A SentinelLABS candidate. ISIS later included it in a narrower interpretation focused on simulations involving very dense material.
AUTODYN Not characterized in the SentinelLABS candidate list ISIS argued that it, along with LS-DYNA, was within Fast16’s intended target set.

Why ISIS proposed a nuclear-simulation interpretation

In its May 18, 2026 report, ISIS argued that Fast16 targeted LS-DYNA and AUTODYN simulations of explosively driven compression of very dense material. It interpreted patterns in the malware, including a density threshold in its logic, as consistent with calculations involving uranium and relevant to a nuclear weapons program.

That is ISIS’s interpretation of the technical clues, not a direct identification of a victim or public proof that a nuclear program was compromised. It is also narrower than SentinelLABS’s original candidate set: the two analyses differ in the software they identify and in how specifically they connect the code patterns to a physical process.

Did Fast16 target Iran, and who operated it?

ISIS calls Iran a credible possible target, citing the timing, the access that would be needed, its interpretation of a uranium-related focus, and public evidence that Iranian researchers used LS-DYNA. The report does not rule out other countries with nuclear weapons programs, including North Korea or possibly Syria. WIRED also describes the Iran reading as a hypothesis and reports competing views among researchers.

Publicly reviewed reporting does not establish who wrote or operated Fast16. A deconfliction note in the leaked material, the sample’s apparent sophistication, and its apparent purpose have prompted speculation about a U.S. or allied intelligence service, but they do not prove attribution. Fast16 is therefore not a confirmed attack on Iran, an established NSA operation, or a proven predecessor to Stuxnet.

How Fast16 relates to Stuxnet

The sample’s approximate 2005 date places it years before Stuxnet became publicly known, making Fast16 an earlier example of malware apparently intended to manipulate the integrity of technical calculations. That chronology supports describing it as pre-Stuxnet; it does not establish a development lineage, shared operator, or direct operational connection.

The important distinction is between disrupting a system’s availability and quietly undermining the correctness of its outputs. Fast16 appears to have pursued the latter: software could continue running while its calculations became suspect. The available reporting describes the potential for erroneous results, but does not document a confirmed accident or other physical harm caused by Fast16.

What the case means for engineering-software security

For organizations that depend on simulation outputs, the case underscores the need to protect both the machines running the software and the integrity of the results those systems produce. Broadcom’s Symantec Threat Hunter Team recommends regularly inventorying loaded endpoint drivers and using application control to block unapproved executables and DLLs. It also recommends Symantec Endpoint Security and Carbon Black EDR; those named products are vendor recommendations, not independent comparative findings.

  • Maintain an inventory of loaded drivers and investigate entries that are unapproved or unexplained.
  • Use application control to restrict unapproved executables and DLLs.
  • For safety- or research-critical simulations, consider how results are independently validated and whether the validation environment could share the same compromise.

SentinelLABS’s appendix includes extracted byte-pattern signatures for forensic research. Those signatures are not, by themselves, a complete current detection or remediation procedure. The reviewed sources do not establish that a modern Fast16 variant exists.
