Min-Hsiu Hsieh and Shogo Yamada describe two theoretical quantum pseudorandom error-correcting code constructions (QPRCs), each designed to withstand specified local quantum noise. Their guarantees are conditional: both rely on the assumption that Learning Parity with Noise (LPN) is hard for quantum algorithms running in time 2O(√n). The paper gives mathematical constructions and a decoding method, not a demonstrated quantum-hardware system.

What makes an error-correcting code pseudorandom?

An ordinary error-correcting code adds structure to information so it can be recovered after errors. A pseudorandom code adds a further property: an observer with limited computational resources should not be able to distinguish its codewords from strings drawn uniformly at random. The distinction is computational, not literal. The codewords are structured, but the stated security claim is that the relevant efficient tests cannot tell them apart.

Hsieh and Yamada extend this idea to quantum encodings. Their abstract describes QPRCs whose encodings are computationally indistinguishable from particular quantum reference objects. This does not mean an encoding is actually sampled from a Haar-random distribution or is identical to a channel that erases all information; it means distinguishing the construction from the stated reference is infeasible for the adversaries covered by the assumption and result.

How the two constructions differ

The paper reports two targets with different indistinguishability references and noise bounds. These are separate theoretical constructions, not a head-to-head hardware comparison.

Pseudorandom isometric error-correcting codes (PRICs) Haar-random isometries All o(n log log n / log n)-local quantum noise Uses pseudorandom functional error-correcting codes and a decoding procedure in the codeword-stabilized framework.
Second QPRC construction The completely depolarizing channel All αn-local quantum noise for some constant α > 0 The abstract describes this as a direct quantum analogue of classical pseudorandom error-correcting codes.

Here, n denotes the number of physical qubits. The first bound is an asymptotic sublinear locality bound; the second permits noise acting locally on a positive constant fraction of n, with the particular constant α not specified in the abstract. These locality statements are mathematical guarantees, not percentages measured in an experiment. Because the targets differ, the bounds alone do not show that one construction is universally better.

Why the LPN assumption matters

Both results rely on LPN being hard for quantum algorithms running in time 2O(√n). That assumption is the foundation for the claimed pseudorandomness; the paper’s construction does not establish LPN hardness itself. The security conclusion is therefore conditional, rather than an unconditional proof that these encodings are secure against every quantum attack.

The time bound describes the class of quantum algorithms against which the assumption is stated. It should not be read as a measured attack cost, a guaranteed security level for a deployed device, or evidence that no faster algorithm exists.

What PRFCs and CWS decoding contribute

Pseudorandom functional error-correcting codes

For the PRIC construction, the authors introduce pseudorandom functional error-correcting codes (PRFCs), a classical primitive constructed under the same LPN assumption. The abstract identifies PRFCs as one of the ingredients supporting the quantum construction; it does not present them as an independent hardware technique.

Decoding in the codeword-stabilized framework

The other ingredient is an efficient decoding procedure for codes in the codeword-stabilized (CWS) framework. CWS constructions combine a graph with a possibly nonlinear classical error-correcting code to form a quantum code. Hsieh and Yamada say their result resolves an open problem concerning general efficient decoding for CWS codes based on nonlinear classical codes. The abstract calls the procedure efficient but does not give operational runtime measurements or implementation benchmarks.

What the result does—and does not—show

The September 30, 2026 arXiv abstract reports theoretical constructions, asymptotic local-noise bounds, and a decoding result. The available information does not establish a quantum-hardware demonstration, measured decoder performance, or deployment. Accordingly, “robust” here refers to the stated mathematical tolerance to local noise, not observed device performance.

Whether particular constructions can be implemented efficiently on real hardware is not established by the abstract.
