On Windows 10, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and turn on “Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X.” The Win+X menu will then show PowerShell instead of Command Prompt. This changes the menu shortcut; it does not remove either shell.

Change the Win+X menu in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings, or press Windows key+I.
  2. Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
  3. Turn on Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X.
  4. Right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X to check the menu. The shell entry should now say Windows PowerShell, with an administrator entry where applicable.

Microsoft’s Windows Command Line team documents this Taskbar switch as the way to choose which shell appears in the menu: Windows 10 Creators Update and the command line.

Switch the menu back to Command Prompt

Return to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and turn the same option off. The Win+X menu will show Command Prompt in place of PowerShell. Microsoft confirms this reversal in its Windows support Q&A.

What this setting changes

The switch changes which shell shortcut is presented in the Win+X Power User menu and related File Explorer command menus. It does not uninstall PowerShell or Command Prompt, and it does not remove cmd.exe or invalidate existing scripts. You can still launch Command Prompt through other supported routes. Microsoft describes the behavior as presenting PowerShell instead of Cmd in those menus, rather than replacing the underlying command-line tools: Microsoft’s explanation.

Windows 11 uses a different setting

Do not look for the Windows 10 Taskbar switch on Windows 11. In Windows 11 22H2, console apps such as Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell open inside Windows Terminal by default. To choose the older console host, Microsoft documents this path: Start > Settings > System > Advanced > Terminal, then select Windows Console Host. This controls the host application for console windows; it is not the Windows 10 switch for choosing PowerShell or Command Prompt in Win+X. See Microsoft Support’s Windows Terminal guidance.
