Renesas introduced the RL78/L23, a 16-bit microcontroller family that runs at up to 32 MHz and combines segment-LCD control, capacitive touch, and dual-bank flash. It is designed for display-based human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and embedded control in products such as smart home appliances, consumer electronics, IoT equipment, and meters—not as a general-purpose application processor.
What is the RL78/L23?
The RL78/L23 is a family of low-power microcontrollers (MCUs) from Renesas Electronics. Its integrated display and touch features target compact control panels where a product needs to show information and accept user input without requiring separate LCD-driver and touch-controller chips.
Renesas announced the family on August 27, 2025, under the release title “Renesas Introduces Ultra-Low-Power RL78/L23 MCUs for Next-Generation Smart Home Appliances”. The company positions it for smart home appliances, consumer electronics, IoT equipment, and metering systems.
What is the RL78/L23 used for?
The family is intended for embedded products with a modest display-based interface and control logic. Examples include appliance panels, HVAC controls, and meters. Its segment LCD controller can drive display segments, while capacitive touch supports buttons or other touch controls. The right fit depends on the display, touch-channel count, memory, pinout, and peripheral requirements of the exact device.

How does the RL78/L23 handle low-power operation?
Renesas reports active current of 109 μA/MHz, minimum standby current of 0.365 μA, and a wake-up time of 1 μs. These are manufacturer-published figures; the announcement does not establish independent measurements. Actual consumption in a finished design will depend on device selection, configuration, clocking, peripherals, display activity, and operating conditions.
The family’s SNOOZE Mode Sequencer is intended to perform selected operations during low-power operation, reducing the need to wake the CPU. Renesas also says the LCD controller’s VL4 reference mode reduces LCD operating current by approximately 30 percent compared with the RL78/L1X group. That comparison is specifically for LCD operating current and is a Renesas-reported figure, not a claim of equivalent reduction in total system power.
Memory, voltage, and device variations
Renesas lists family options with 64, 128, 256, or 512 KB of program flash, 16 or 32 KB of RAM, and 8 KB of data flash. The launch announcement describes up to 512 KB of dual-bank flash and up to 32 KB of SRAM. The announced operating range is 1.6–5.5 V, and the operating temperature range is −40 °C to +105 °C.
These are family-level ranges, not specifications that apply to every orderable part. Package, pin count, touch channels, memory, and peripherals vary by device. Check the current Renesas RL78/L23 product page and the datasheet for the exact part number before designing a board or finalizing a bill of materials.

What dual-bank flash means for firmware updates
Dual-bank flash provides two memory banks. A design can use one bank for the running firmware while writing an update to the other, a capability Renesas presents as enabling updates without interrupting system operation. That does not make every update automatically seamless or secure: update logic, validation, recovery behavior, and any security measures must be implemented appropriately in the product firmware.

Which evaluation board works with RL78/L23?
Renesas announced two development options with the family:
- FPB-RL78L23 Fast Prototyping Board: for initial evaluation and prototyping with the MCU.
- RSSK-RL78L23 capacitive-touch evaluation system: for evaluating the family’s touch functionality.
Renesas said both were available at the August 2025 launch. That announcement does not establish current stock, so check Renesas or an authorized distributor for present availability and the correct board revision.
How to compare RL78/L23 with other Renesas MCUs
Renesas’s product page compares the RL78/L23 with the RL78/L13, RL78/L12, and RL78/I1C groups. Choose by the requirements of the complete design rather than by family name alone:

What the published specifications do—and do not—establish
The cited low-power and LCD-current figures are Renesas claims published in its launch announcement. They are useful for identifying the family’s design goals, but they do not provide an independent comparison against competing MCUs or a measurement of a complete product. Validate power consumption and display behavior in the intended configuration before relying on them for a battery-life or thermal estimate.
