Samsung DeX is different: it gives supported Galaxy tablets a desktop-like workspace for apps running on the tablet. Choose DeX to arrange local apps; choose a remote-access app to use a separate computer or service. They can also work together.
What is the difference between DeX and remote access?
DeX changes how compatible Galaxy Tab apps are arranged and used on the tablet, including in windows. A remote-access app connects to a different computer or hosted desktop and displays or controls that remote environment. Samsung lists remote and virtual desktop clients among the kinds of apps used with DeX, but that listing is not a current compatibility guarantee.
In short, DeX is a workspace, while remote access is a connection to another machine. You can use a remote client in a DeX workflow, but DeX alone does not provide access to a PC.
Which option should you start with?

Remote-access choices for a Samsung tablet
Microsoft Windows App
Microsoft documents Windows App for Android and Chrome OS as a way to connect to supported Windows devices and apps. The eligible destination and setup requirements vary. Connecting to a remote PC is not the same setup as connecting to Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop, so verify the instructions for the specific service or device you intend to reach. Microsoft’s consumer guidance describes Remote Desktop as a way to access apps, files, and the desktop as if you were at the remote PC; it does not establish performance on a particular Galaxy Tab.

Chrome Remote Desktop
Google documents using an Android mobile device to access a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer after remote access has been set up on that host. This is a possible route when you control or can configure the computer you want to reach. The cited Android setup guidance does not establish enterprise controls or promise particular features beyond the documented setup.

Check DeX and app compatibility on your exact tablet
Samsung says selected Galaxy Tab models support standalone DeX and describes wired and wireless external-display modes. Support and capabilities depend on the model and software generation, so confirm the current guidance for your device rather than assuming every Samsung tablet supports every DeX mode.

App availability is also not a guarantee of DeX behavior. Samsung cautions that not all apps are compatible with DeX and says: “Some apps may not be available depending on the region, device OS, or the app store being used.” Check the app and your tablet’s software before relying on a particular workflow.

Make text entry more practical
A keyboard is optional, not a remote-access requirement. Samsung documents keyboard use with DeX and sells Book Cover Keyboard accessories separately; a compatible Bluetooth keyboard is another possible way to enter text during remote sessions. Neither keyboard supplies the remote-access app or connection. Check the precise Tab model, keyboard layout, and connection method before buying or pairing an accessory. What to verify before choosing an app
- Host and service: Identify whether you need a Windows PC, a Microsoft-hosted Windows environment, or a configured Mac, Windows, or Linux computer.
- Setup and account: Confirm what must be configured on the host and which account or work credentials you need. Requirements depend on the destination.
- Tablet support: Check the exact Galaxy Tab model, its software version, the current Android app availability, and any DeX mode you plan to use.
- Input and display: Check how the app behaves with your intended keyboard, mouse, tablet screen, or external display. These details can differ by app and device.
- Security and access: Review the controls available for your host and service, particularly if this is a work device or account.
- Performance and cost: Confirm current pricing or licensing and try the connection in your own setup. Official guidance cited here does not compare latency, image quality, reliability, keyboard mapping, or price across named apps and Galaxy Tabs.
