Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 was Microsoft’s 2006–2007 client update for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1/SP2. Its installer was historically distributed through Microsoft download channels, but the original download’s current availability has not been verified. KB925876 is the base client update; KB925877 is a separate language-interface package.
What is Remote Desktop Connection 6.0?
Remote Desktop Connection 6.0, also called Terminal Services Client 6.0, was released as Microsoft update KB925876. It let supported Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers use newer Terminal Services features when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. It could still connect to earlier terminal servers and desktops, but the newly introduced features required Vista or Server 2008 at the remote end. Microsoft’s update catalog record identifies the supported platforms and feature limitation; the archived Microsoft KB 925876 article documents the client update.
Which package do you need?
| Package | Purpose | Documented prerequisites or targets | Historical release date |
|---|---|---|---|
| KB925876 | Base Remote Desktop Connection / Terminal Services Client 6.0 update | Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1/SP2; x86 and x64 variants are described in the archived KB | November 28, 2006, according to the archived KB |
| KB925877 | MUI language-interface package for RDC 6.0 | Requires the English RDC 6.0 client and the corresponding Windows MUI; separate XP and Server 2003 packages | February 27, 2007 for XP; April 24, 2007 for Server 2003, according to the archived KB |
KB925877 is not the client itself. Its documented installation order is to install the English RDC 6.0 update first, then the matching MUI. The XP MUI requires XP SP2, its SP2 MUI, and the English client; the Server 2003 package requires the matching SP1 or SP2 MUI and English client. The archived article says the MUI installation does not require a restart and that the Start-menu shortcut remains in English. See the archived Microsoft KB 925877 article.
Supported systems and historical package details
Microsoft’s 2007 catalog record lists Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as targets and classifies the update as non-security. It gives approximate package sizes of 1,620 KB for Windows XP and 1,518 KB for Windows Server 2003. These are historical catalog figures, not confirmation that a current installer is available or suitable for a particular machine. Microsoft Update Catalog: KB925876

Is the original download still available?
Microsoft historically published RDC 6.0 through its Download Center and catalog channels. The current status of the original installer endpoint has not been verified, so a historical listing should not be treated as a working download link. Avoid third-party mirror downloads presented as authenticated Microsoft installers. If you already have an installer, verify that its publisher and digital signature are Microsoft before running it; the historical package record does not establish the file’s integrity or present-day security.
Important Server 2003 upgrade issue
The archived KB warns about installing an earlier RDC 6.0 build on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and then upgrading the operating system to SP2. In that sequence, the update could disappear from Add or Remove Programs and associated files could lose their signatures. Microsoft’s documented workarounds were to install the April 24, 2007 client release before upgrading to SP2, or reinstall the client after SP2. The archived KB 925876 article describes the issue.

RDC 6.0 does not prove a computer is secure
KB925876’s presence alone does not show that a computer has all required security updates. Microsoft’s later MS09-044 security bulletin documents security updates affecting RDC 6.0/6.1 binaries on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The bulletin is evidence that later updates mattered; it does not establish the patch state of any individual computer. These are legacy operating systems and a historic client update should not be read as proof of current support or protection.
