What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose the original if its exact presentation, mechanics, or place in gaming history is part of what you want to experience. Choose a remaster or updated edition if its documented changes—such as revised visuals, options, or modern-platform support—fit you better. The label alone cannot settle it: compare what changed in the specific game.
How to decide between the original and a remaster
Before buying or starting either version, compare the release on the points that affect your experience. “Remaster,” “remake,” and “updated edition” are useful descriptions, but they do not guarantee a fixed set of changes. Epic Games Store’s overview explains the broad distinction between remakes and remasters, while the individual release details show what a particular game actually does.
How much of the original game remains?
Check whether the story, mechanics, structure, and pacing have been preserved or substantially rebuilt. If you want to encounter the game as players originally did, changes to any of these may matter more than sharper graphics. If you are open to a reinterpretation, a more extensive rebuild may suit you.
What changed in the presentation?
Look for specific details about graphics, effects, sound, animation, and interface rather than assuming that “remastered” means only higher resolution. For example, the Steam listing for Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER describes HD graphics and post-processing effects.

Were controls or convenience features changed?
Read the release description for changes intended to make the game work on modern hardware or feel more convenient. Such changes can be useful, but they are not automatically improvements for every player. PlayStation’s Legacy of Kain remaster announcement, for example, describes bringing the classics to modern hardware while preserving their integrity; that is a stated goal, not a guarantee that every player will prefer the result.
Can you switch back to the classic look or sound?
Some releases let you compare versions directly; others do not. Day of the Tentacle Remastered offers classic and remastered modes and lets players mix presentation elements such as graphics, audio, and interface. It is an example of a specific release feature, not something to expect from every remaster.

What the examples show
| Release | What the official source documents | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER | Steam describes HD graphics and post-processing effects. Capcom’s GOG page lists original Resident Evil releases alongside the HD remaster and describes quirks in the old PC version. | A modernized presentation can be weighed against the particulars of an older release. Those details do not make one edition best for every player. |
| Clock Tower: Rewind | PlayStation Blog describes it as an updated release and identifies an enhanced Rewind mode. | An updated release may add a title-specific mode; check what that mode changes before deciding whether you want it. |
| FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE | KOEI TECMO Europe announced its release for 12 March 2026 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam. | This is a remake, not a remaster, and demonstrates why the extent of a release’s changes matters more than treating all updated editions alike. |
| Day of the Tentacle Remastered | Double Fine documents classic and remastered modes, with options to mix graphics, audio, and interface elements. | A direct presentation comparison is possible in this particular game. It is an adventure-game example of a feature, not a horror-game recommendation. |
Which version should you play?
- Choose the original when experiencing the historical release as closely as possible is your priority, or when the documented changes in a newer edition do not appeal to you.
- Choose the remaster or updated edition when its specific presentation or usability changes match your preferences, or when that is the edition available for your platform.
- Choose a remake on its own terms when you are interested in a substantial reinterpretation rather than expecting a lightly updated original.
- When you are unsure, compare official descriptions and look for a classic-mode option. If no mode switch is documented, do not assume one exists.
