Reflect Orbital wants to redirect sunlight from low Earth orbit onto selected places on Earth after sunset. Its reported goal of 50,000 satellites by 2035 is an ambition, not a fleet in orbit: the company’s first satellite is described as a demonstration mission. The concept could create a moving, localized patch of light, but it has not yet shown that it can deliver useful commercial power or make a place as bright as daytime.

How would a space mirror deliver sunlight at night?

A satellite carrying a large reflective surface would use sunlight that would otherwise miss Earth and direct some of it toward a chosen ground location. The illuminated area would move as the satellite travels across its orbit, so the service would be a passing beam or patch of light—not a second Sun fixed over a town or solar farm.

Reflect Orbital has described potential uses including adding light to solar farms, outdoor lighting, agriculture and emergency response. These are proposed applications; the available reporting does not establish that the company has demonstrated grid-scale electricity generation, increased crop yields or emergency-service performance.

Calling the plan “selling sunlight” can obscure an important distinction: the proposed service is reflected illumination, not a demonstrated way to provide dependable electricity. Any useful output would depend on how much light reaches the site, how long it stays there and what equipment can make use of it.

What does “50,000 mirrors” mean?

Nature reported on 17 July 2026, with a clarification on 18 July, that Reflect Orbital aims to have 50,000 satellites by 2035 and aspires to create “full noon” brightness at selected locations. The figure is a company target, not the number currently operating in orbit, and “full noon” is an aspiration—not an achieved result.

The company’s first satellite has been reported as a demonstration mission. ABC News and The National reported in July and August 2026 that the FCC had approved or licensed the first demonstration satellite. Reflect Orbital called the licence a first step toward testing the technology’s efficacy and safeguards. That reported milestone should not be read as authorization for a 50,000-satellite constellation; the reporting cited here does not establish the full terms or scope of the FCC authorization.

Would one mirror make it daylight?

No. A mirror redirects only a fraction of the sunlight over a limited area, and a satellite in low orbit moves quickly relative to a point on the ground. ABC News described a spot roughly five kilometres across and reported that a proposed 18-metre mirror would provide limited illumination compared with daylight.

A 2026 arXiv preprint by Kocifaj, Bakos and Kundracik modeled an 18 × 18-metre proposed pilot mirror at about 600 kilometres altitude, as well as larger 54 × 54-metre mirrors. Its modeled illuminated patch had a radius of about 2.5 kilometres. These are proposal parameters and simulation results, not measurements from operating Reflect Orbital hardware.

For scale, ABC News reported the following contextual illumination levels in 2026:

Light source Illuminance reported
Moonlight on a clear night 0.3 lux
Office lighting 500 lux
Midday sunlight 100,000 lux

Lux measures light falling on a surface. The large gap between moonlight and midday sunlight helps explain why a visible reflected spot is not automatically equivalent to useful daytime lighting.

What would it take to brighten a location?

Brightness, coverage and duration pull in different directions. A larger mirror can redirect more light, but it is heavier and harder to launch and operate. A lower orbit can keep the reflected spot relatively bright, but the satellite sweeps over a location quickly. More satellites could increase the chances of repeated passes, but would also increase the size and cost of the system.

ABC News reported astronomer Michael Brown of Monash University estimating that 3,000 satellites, each with a 54-metre mirror, would produce about 20% of midday illumination, with a pass lasting up to 3.5 minutes over a given location. This is an expert estimate, not a verified operating measurement; it depends on the proposed mirror and constellation assumptions.

That estimate illustrates why a headline fleet count alone does not answer whether a site can be lit reliably. The result would depend on mirror size and reflectivity, orbit and satellite speed, the requested location, and how often the fleet can provide a pass. A brief pass is also different from continuous lighting through a night.

Could reflected light generate useful solar power?

Reflect Orbital has floated directing light toward solar farms, but no independently validated customer results or commercially useful power output are established in the reporting cited here. A solar panel can respond to light, but a proposed nighttime beam must first be delivered to the site, and the short duration and lower illumination estimated for the system matter to the amount of electricity produced.

ABC News reported Brown’s estimate that an hour of daylight at one location could cost US$10–20 million under the proposed pricing assumptions. That is an expert estimate, not a price quoted by Reflect Orbital or a definitive cost study. ABC’s account contrasts the idea with grid battery storage; the estimate alone does not establish which option is cheaper in every use case.

The economics would depend on launch, satellite construction, operations, how much usable light reaches each customer and how often it can be supplied. The available reporting does not provide a full economic model or verified customer demand, so there is not enough evidence to conclude that the service will be commercially viable.

What are the concerns about astronomy and the night environment?

Bright moving reflections could interfere with astronomical observations, and artificial light at night can raise concerns about ecosystems and human exposure. Nature reported astronomers’ concern about telescope impacts. The National reported that environmental and conservation groups petitioned over potential environmental and wildlife effects. These are concerns about possible impacts, not proof of measured population-level harm from an operating constellation.

The August 2026 arXiv preprint by Kocifaj, Bakos and Kundracik modeled atmospheric light pollution for proposed mirror scenarios. It calculated effects extending roughly 30 kilometres for one satellite and an obvious glow from 80 kilometres in a scenario with 400 mirrors illuminating the same patch. Those distances depend on the paper’s assumptions about the atmosphere and ground reflectivity; they are simulated outcomes, not field observations. There is no deployed 50,000-mirror constellation from which to report measured effects.

The scale of deployment matters: observations or models for one mirror cannot, by themselves, establish the combined effects of a much larger fleet. At the same time, a lack of operational measurements is not evidence that the projected effects will be negligible. Testing safeguards and assessing cumulative impacts are part of what the company says its demonstration licence is intended to address.

Has a space reflector been tried before?

ABC News reports that Russia deployed the 20-metre-wide Znamya 2 reflector in 1992. It reflected a moving spot of light across Europe, and the project was soon abandoned. The episode shows that an orbital reflector can produce a visible ground effect; it does not establish the technical or commercial viability of Reflect Orbital’s proposed service.
